Paramount denies Blu-Ray defection

Claims that contract clause allows withdrawal in the event of Warner dropping HD-DVD support

Following the recent news that Warner Bros is to drop its support of Toshiba’s HD-DVD hi-def movie format, fellow movie studio Paramount has denied that it is to do the same.

Bloomberg reports that US newspapers are claiming that Paramount has a clause in its HD-DVD exclusivity contract that allows it to withdraw if Warner drops its support of the format.

However, Paramount spokesperson Brenda Ciccone told the news agency that “Paramount’s current plan is to continue to support the HD-DVD format”. Toshiba added that the reports are nothing more than speculative.

Following the shock Warner news, share in HD-DVD owning Toshiba fell by 1.4 per cent, whilst Sony’s rose by 3.4 per cent.

NeveR!!! MS should have offered HD-DVD with the X360. Failing to do so allowed Sony to lose profits on its gaming console, but in effect win the format war, which will get it much more money in the future.

Sony also didn't sacrifice a whole lot of their gaming division. First year PS3 sales were higher than First year X360 sales. :)

There is no way on this planet Sony could ever had a higher 1st year in sales than Microsoft's Xbox 360 that is just stupid talk.

Look at who has been crowned overall best for last year - Xbox 360.

Xbox 360 is the leading platform for gaming and online and overall best gaming console to this day.

Microsoft have no interest in who wins other than hoping neither catch on, which is what is happening so far. Using the PS3 as a Trojan Horse for BluRay shows just what little respect they have for Gamers. I still fail to see why anyone would want to pay so much more than they do now for the same film. Look how MP3 has changed the music business. Thats because it was cheaper and more usable. Why should the film industry expect to go the other way?

The scary thing about that last comment is that listening to MP3's is like nails on a chalk board to my ears but for some reason people swear by it?!

I really hope the same doesnt happen to films.....

And in response to the comment number 2, the only reason Sony didnt sacrifice a whole lot of their gaming division is because its the only division they have left that will keep them in business.
Nobody cares about Bravia's or their outdated MP3 players, the only thing Sony has left is games.....

Microsoft actually does have some stake in who wins, beyond "hoping neither does." MS's HDi technology is used for HD-DVD's interactive features, while Java is used for BD.

Blu-ray outcome is a good thing

I am quite glad that Blu-ray is on the top side, and I hope Paramount would start releasing Dual Format Hi Def soo. I like some of their movies. Blu-ray now have support of contents, and content rules and drive the Hi Def Industry. However, I think Blu-ray down side is cost, the equipment and the regular new release blu-ray are still too expensive for a mid income person to own blu-ray disc. If the price point of Blu-ray or HD-DVD drops to level of DVD, then price point may leverage above content. But, I am not sure.

In response to comment 5, Sony has allot more going for them than games. There a huge electronics company and in terms of Nintendo and Sega their relatively new to the games industry.
And how can you think mp3s are like nails on a chalk board? You can’t even tell the difference between cd audio and mp3s unless you’re a musical geniuses.

I bet MS has a Blu-ray add-on for the 360 hidden in a secret lab. There's no reason why the Xbox can't have an add-on Blu-ray drive - if the format wins, MS can offer it's customers a solution.

OK, Comment #8. Sega died when PS2 came out. It only lives in Game Form now. Just wanted to correct that for ya, you probably meant Xbox.

Anywho... I support the HD-DVD side because it's more affordable to my wallet. Those who have Blu-Ray make 10x the money I make! If I'm not mistaken isn't there more lower income people in the world? We can't afford either, and if we could I think we would buy HD-DVD because affordability. HD-DVD is not dead yet! Toshiba needs to Step their Game Up in order to turn things around! If they should die, oh well I have DVD, iTunes and Xbox Live to fall back on! I'm not gonna go to Blu-Ray! Even if Disney and Warner Bros. went Blu! I'm not going to upgrade my Disney collection yet again this time from DVD to Blu! I hope Paramount stick to their guns and help make HD-DVD become greater and stronger... thus maybe will help get other studio's to come to or back to HD-DVD!

HD DVD's and Blu Ray disks are all comparable in price IMO. What I don't understand about your last comment Brad is that a Blu Ray player inside o***reat gaming console like the PS3 is as cheap as chips in my mind. I have the best of both worlds for less than what you would spend on an Xbox 360 Elite and an HD DVD clunky add-on.

You have not got the best of both worlds. 360 is by far the best Gaming Machine. Thats what it was intended to be. PS3 was intended to get BluRay into homes. Thats what it did at the expense of games. Now, if the first part of the war is over, which it probably is not yet, then the much bigger hurdle for BluRay is to try and replace DVD. This will take years. If ever.
As most people prefer mp3 cos its very cheap, ( or mostly free) so they will prefer DVD, You can get all films on dvd, all music on CD. Even if peopple get an HD DVD player or a BluRay, they will mostly play cds and DVDs on them.Cost and availability will determine this

In Las Vegas after the CES show when I was in a Hotel elevator by myself leaning on the wall after a long day on the CES floor. The elevator stopped on the second level of the casino
about 9 to 10 men came in to the elevator the first few men that came in had seen me but appairently the last ones in did not, they were taller than me and I could not be seen behind the other men. you could tell they were talking about the CES show but some one in the front of the elevator said "I need to buy Time Warner" then it was very quiet an no one said anything else,
just dead quiet. I could see his side but not his face, The elevator door opened and we all steped out and as I walked away I turned around and looked at the man that said "I need to buy Time Warner" It was Bill Gates!
I still dont think he knew I was in the elevator with him. I dont think I was supposed to hear what he said.

To the earlier posts, PS3 sold more in its first year than the 360. FACT. So, the 360 sold more in 07 than the PS3, but that's because a) it was more expensive initially and b) has only been out in Europe since March.

Blu-Ray inside the PS3 is NOT bad for gaming at all - in fact entirely the opposite. BD hold 50GB of data which is being used to improve games with higher quality graphics, uncompressed audio at higher bit rates and anything uncompressed is going to help load times. So this is actually respectful to gamers.

And HD-DVD prices and BR prices are identical in most places in the UK as well. Check Amazon.co.uk if you don't believe me. Harry Potter HD-DVD - £17.98. Harry Potter Blu-Ray - £17.98. Five years ago I picked up Harry Potter on DVD for £19.99 from a large high street shop and didn't complain one bit!

Face it people, some of you prefer XBox and that's fine, other prefer PS3. Both consoles are excellent but in the future I can see PS3 winning and Microsoft again playing catch up and releasing a new console in 2 - 3 years.

Hey Brad I didn't mean Xbox I meant to say sega. I know sega stoped making game consoles but they still make games, I just used it to show that sony haven't been in the industry as long as other companies.

Most industry insiders have opted for the 360 over the PS3, as have many consumers who constantly see better iterations of games on the former rather then the latter. Of course, xbox live is still far ahead of what Sony can offer when it comes to online gaming.
Odd that HD-DVD looks like failing, as Sony hardly have a good track record with new formats.

The BluRay drive in PS3 makes no difference to games. Games on PS3 are almost the same as ones played on the 360 Core. The only noticeable difference so far has been the slowdown experienced on PS3, and usually this can be cured by patching the game.
