Rare classics heading to Xbox Live Arcade?

With sources suggesting that N64 shooter Goldeneye is leading the way

Many gamers have been holding on to the hope that Nintendo’s Virtual Console service will one day play host to Rare’s rich catalogue of retro titles – but online rumours suggest that Xbox 360’s Live Arcade might pip it to the post.

Xbox Evolved
claims that a joint agreement between Microsoft, Rare, James Bond movie studio MGM and Bond video game licence holder Activision has paved the way for N64 classic Goldeneye to arrive on Microsoft’s online platform.

It goes on to claim that the release will be timed to coincide with that of Activision’s upcoming new Bond game. There are also claims that the game will undergo a graphical overhaul.

In addition, the site states that a number of Rare’s older titles may also be heading to Live Arcade, naming Perfect Dark and Banjo Kazooie.

Stew, I fully appreciate your comment, and as an owner of all the Nintendo systems since the SNES, bar the virtual boy, I would normally fully agree, but, LIVE is, for me, a much more reliable and easy to use, platform for this kind of thing, depite the current problems.

I honestly believe that any multiplayer on LIVE would be far better than anything Nintendo could shackle together. Plus, I'd rather use my 360 controller for FPSes than the wii mote or a gamecube controller!

Don't want to be a hater becuase I, like everyone else, has fond fond memories of Goldeneye.
However, this is really not as exciting as it first seems.
Like many of the retro releases, I think the majority of us will find it very disappointing beyond the first hour of our retro reminiscence when it is compared to the shooters available today (both single and multiplayer). The game is over 10 years old now to be fair, and did alot for the genre, but I would imagine it will appear very outdated today (dont get me wrong - I will still download it !)
Enjoy.

I do hope that this is true, while I loved GE and would download it I'm more excited at the thought of perfect dark on XBLA as the multiplayer of that totally rocked with all the options you could set.

MGM is owned by a partnership led by Sony Corporation of America. I can't imagine Sony allowing either MS or Nintendo to (re)publish an exclusive Bond game.

I guess you also wouldnt imagine MGM/Sony releasing films on the Xbox Live video marketplace but they are doing just that.
MGM will be sure to get a slice of the profit if this deal goes ahead so I can see no real reason why they wouldnt as its all cash in the bank.
