Sony Japan axes 20GB and 60GB PS3

Platform holder to “vigorously promote the expansion of the PS3 platform” with 40GB model

SCEJ has confirmed that the final shipment of the existing 20GB and 60GB PS3 is scheduled this month, after which the 40GB machine will be the only model in production.

“Along with both the increased efforts to improve software development environment and the availability of a more extensive line-up of software titles for PS3, SCEI will vigorously promote the expansion of the PS3 platform by further concentrating on the 40GB HDD model introduced in November 2007, equipped with the core technology components that make PS3 the most advanced high-definition entertainment system while realizing lower power consumption,” added a statement from SCEJ.

Power Hungry Playstation

It's interesting that Sony mention the power consumption. What they mean is that this is an area they want to improve on. Ever asked yourself why? Because it is too power hungry and uses up too much electricity.

You dont get these problems with the Xbox 360, because Microsoft research the console's design properly.

No, it's a natural result of shrinking the die for the Cell from 90nm to 65nm. The same will be the case for 65nm 360s compared to 90nm ones.

I should think it will use less power, its less capable. This downgraded machine has no backwards compatiblity, card reader, a smaller hard drive, less usb ports, etc.

"Uses too much electricity"? What happens, do all the lights in your house fade when you boot it up!?!? I can't imagine this is a problem for anyone, unless they live in a caravan and run a generator.

This is just their marketing department putting a whole ton of spin on the fact that the 40gb is a stripped down ps3. That it uses less electricity is literally the only positive thing, and its hardly groundbreaking at that.

No one will have their decision to buy a ps3 either influenced or swayed in the slightest by the fact it uses less power

Why cant sony release a "hardcore" model of the PS3 with all the bells & whistles included? This would rival the XBox Elite and perhaps even the Xbox Ultimate?

If i purchase a PS3, i certainly dont want the lame cheapo version with no emulation!

What, the console that has the worst failure rate in gaming history, scratches peoples games, overheats and has fans that sound like a helicopter taking off... yeah, well researched.

If the 360 is so poor, why has it sold 3 times more than PS3 and why is it still outselling it??

360 sux it breaks-- and so does its Elite "Brother" until they fix it.........
The PS3 should have always had the ability to play PS2 games not just the "expensive" 60gb model, sony should include as a feature in all PS3s... until then i wont buy one
(but i'll laugh at the XBOX360 for unreliability)
