Prime Minister “very worried” about games; Industry has responsibility to society

Gordon Brown has once again aired his concerns over violent video games as he launched a crackdown on knife crime, reports The Sun.

He told the tabloid: “I am very worried about video and computer games. No one wants censorship or an interfering State. But the industry has some responsibility to society and needs to exercise that.”

It’s not the first time Brown has linked games to violent crime – he has already said that "Parents are concerned" about "harmful violence and sexual imagery in games and on the internet,” and that “Society must look at video games” and how they affect children.

I don't know about knives, but I'm sure games are to blame for all the increased rocket propelled grenade and sniper attacks in my neighborhood.

I saw kids capturing a flag in broad daylight, it's simply outrageous.

Forget why no mention of films, they at least have a governing body. What about books, which have no issues with censorship whatsoever, which can easily draw in readers *** much, or arguably more than videogames, they may not be interactive, but they certainly can play with your imagination.

Once again, pointing the finger of blame at the gaming industry when in my opinion it should be at the partents of the children involved, as well as his own responsibility to society to make sure we don't turn into a nanny state.

Reythor, that might have been me, sorry about that. I saw your flag, it looked so... flappy. I was caught by temptation. I apologise. As for the sniper, nothing to do with me.

Books contain far worse, far more graphic content yet they don't even have an age rating.
This is typical socialist blame culture. They don't like it when people are held responsible for their own actions.

I used to play a knife game called"eat the peg" when I was a kid( before console games) .That didn't make me anymore a knife fighter than a video game would. People who use weapons do so because they choose to do so. No movie, book, or video game should be blaimed because they did. If one is blaimed though, all should. Lets just burn books and discontinue watching movies lol. If we legislate games, we might as well hit all media at the same time0_o.

Not really a socialist thing is it, the last conservative government brought in the video recordings act, banned umpteen films, band dmac sat descramblers over the red hot TV thing and have made noises about Internet controls.

Here we go again, its the government doing their usual "do as i say not as i do" plan, this is just a cheap attempt at deflecting attention away from the fact they are responsible for the ills of society, not records films or games. This government never takes responsibility for anything at all, it is always somebody elses fault. however it is not just down to the government that society is becoming more immoral it is down to the parents of such children, the ones who think it is their right to have achildren without really contemplating what it actually involves - which is the responsibility for someone else's development in this world inclduing teaching basics like right and wrong

Mr Brown needs to explain to be more specific about what games he sees as being the problem, not state 'games' are at fault for the problems of knife crime.

put metal detectors in schools and that would reduce the ability for young people to actually carry them around, most of the time its a power play from one group over another, or as they say 'protection' that is leading towards esculation.

same old same old, a need for something to blame and technology is always the easy option as its not as understood as something like football or cricket because it is not part of an MP's social grouping.

When Mr Brown states 'games' as the issue, does he mean all games and that say Mario is a violent character having an impact on the youth (unless you see a young person jumping on anothers head to get a power up (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VlmKVRMuDg" onclick="window.open ( this.href ); return false;" class="comment_url" >http://www.youtube...RMuDg ) for answers!!!).

It is a tired debate that is too wide. a few hundred years ago it was the powers at be who supported the burning at the stake of scientists, why? because it was not understood by those that fear change (maybe, could be wrong)

Our Government send young people to fight in wars and allow the content of the fighting to be broadcast to millions of people as though it was some sort of soap opera. Kids have been brought up to think war is cool via film, books, advertising and various Governments (directly) investing money (taxpayers) into the creation of games that are used as a recruiting tool (see Americas Army, UK no1 partner in Iraq etc so it is directly/indirectly linked).

In the UK we have a rise in underskilled under educated people who will do what ever they wish to make money the easy way (see www.chavscum.com/. ie have a baby or 4, sell bootleg etc and with this comes a natural link to violence that is within the tribal communities that these activities surface.

Games are not the fault of the rise in knife crime, i will believe there is a true link when there is a rise in RPG/BFG crime or more dressed as plumbers.

Perhaps Gordie should get together with the **** from McDonalds as they are both shining beacons of society.

So the kids that go round in gangs indiscriminately knifing and shooting other gangs are doing so because of Computer Games. Just like they were in the Teddy Boy & Mod days of the late 1950's eh?

And of course the fact that they mostly listen to hard core rap music portraying gangs in LA & New York purveying similar acts has absolutely no influence on their actions whatsoever?

RE 16:

You cant say that about 'Rap' music, thats just as bad as what Gor-duh is saying.

I've listened to 'Hard core Rap music' my whole life, well, since I was about 7 yrs old and never once stabbed or assaulted anyone in my life.

why?

Because I had two loving parents who brought me up well and taught me right from wrong.
Dont get me wrong, there were times when I've wanted to assault people for various reasons but I havent.

Why?

Because I had two loving parents who brought me up well and taught me right from wrong.

Gordon fears what he does not understand.

He's also tying to magnify unrest to distract us from real issues and refocus blame away from (voting) parents.

He forgets... more and more (voting) parents are playing computer games.

Here's an idea Mr Brown, how about trying to educate parents and the media in the fact that video games are not just the past time of children and that parents should take responsibility for what they allow their children to watch, play, read ect..?

Nah, what am I thinking, stupid idea, much simpler to just go for the scapegoat for your own partys failings in dealing with violent crime...

Another idea: How about just 'making stuff up' for your own ends, like using the 'unproven' idea of passive smoking to enforce a smoking ban? Worked before, I'm sure your party could pull it o***ain when tackling the 'dangers' of playing video games...

So 1% of knife attacks are by blind people?
Wow, there's something to get your teeth into. BAN GUIDE DOGS AND WHITE STICKS NOW. That should sort the aggressive blind ******s out!

But seriously the "too busy playing games" comment is so close to the truth. I bet a huge majority of these gang kids are in the minority of their age group who do not spend leisure time gaming. I just wish somebody would actually research it!
...and advise our great leader of the fact.

The sooner WiiFit comes out and we can point to the health benefits and how good it is for kids the better.

Oh, and I was a gaming teenager. I am now a gaming 45 year old, and there are many many like me. The Pacman generation has grown up!

There are lots and lots of video games that you drive really fast in.
So presumably video games are responsible for all road accidents.
Why hasn't Gordon asked for a ban of these driving games yet?

This is typical of governments attempts to fool the hysterical masses and galvanise opinions of those who they manipulate through the media. The Brown governemnt will carry on blaming games for all manner of things until the Guardian and Sun readers of the world create a pettion asking for games to be banned, you see Gorden brown can then say that the People want action so 'He' has to respond to the peoples wishes.

Its a pity that Sci are currently riding high in the news, bet Brown doesnt want to loose all that juicy Tax revenue. Or a potential donor.

Both brown and his rank predecessor blair are serial control freaks. They are both in denial that they make mistakes or ever have for that matter. To make something palatable to the electorate, the goverment use generalistics terms like 'using a mobile phone whilst driving can be more dangerous than driving when drunk'. Now the "can" bit means 1% of mobile phone drivers are more dangerous than drunk drivers. This is classic new labour spin and slime. In some cases these champagne socialists are just as bad religous extremists. I just wish they'd go and live somewhere else.

A classic verse from a favourite Rush song seem to describe them very well.

The righteous rise
With burning eyes
Of hatred and ill-will.
Madmen fed on fear and lies
To beat and burn and kill.

They say there are strangers who threaten us,
Our immigrants and infidels.
They say there is strangeness to danger us
In our theatres and bookstore shelves,
That those who know whats best for us
Must rise and save us from ourselves.

Quick to judge,
Quick to anger,
Slow to understand
Ignorance and prejudice
And fear walk hand in hand.
