Japanese games industry to hit record high in ‘08

Square Enix president Yoichi Wada sees bright times ahead for Eastern games market

Speaking at a gathering for Japan’s Computer Entertainment Supplier body, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada has predicted that the Japanese games market will enjoy a third consecutive year of growth and reach an all new high in 2008.

Bloomberg reports that revenue for the period should exceed YEN 700 billion, just ahead of 2007’s figure of YEN 687.7 billion.

“The market conditions are very favourable to growth for software makers worldwide,'' Wada stated. “There are a lot of good titles out there helping to expand the market.''

Hirokazu Hamamurs, of Famitsu publisher Enterbrain, added: “The industry sales forecast is very realistic. Japan is entering an era where every family will own a game player.”
