Legal wrangling between Microsoft and Nintendo sees online-enabled N64 port scrapped

Those of you whose juices had begun to flow following last week’s news of a possible Xbox Live Arcade version of Rare’s celebrated N64 shooter Goldeneye should brace yourself for disappointment – the game has been canned.

1Up reports that the very real conversion was a mere two months from completion when Microsoft and Nintendo decided it would not be possible to resolve their differences.

The disagreement reportedly concerned whether Nintendo should receive a one-off payment for the licence or instead an ongoing share of any sales generated by the game.

Depressingly, the port, which would have boasted the same visuals, weapons and levels, was said to boast full online multiplayer on Microsoft’s network. The only omissions would have been a handful of characters for which licensing issues could not be resolved.

I sincerely hope both parties come to their senses and resolve this stupid feud and do what is best for the customer by releasing this game.
If this was a few years ago I could have understood Nintendos stance but now that they are raking the money in from the DS and Wii its not like they need the money as badly.
Especially considering the fact in the article last week that showed they didnt need Nintendo'*****ission to release it apart from activision holding back the license because they asked them too.

If Nintendo dont bite the bullet and sort this out in the next few months I will have lost a lot of respect for them.

WHAT ARE THEY THINKING????? even if nintendo wanted half the profit surely its still worth it????

hardly any extra developement cost?? its already made and they virtually converted it any way!!!

this could have been THE BIGGEST XBOX LIVE ARCADE GAME EVER!!

Come on sort it out!!! you'll make millions of £££

just think 800 points yeah (£7.20) at least 5 million people round the world will by it so thats at least £36million and a hell of a lot of happy gamers

£36 million at least!!!

Bazza,

I think 5 million might be a slightly optimistic estimate, It will probably sell more along the line of a few hundred thousand, maybe a million but quite a few people will probably try the trial version and leave it at that.

While I do hope it comes out at some point I'm a bit disappointed with nintendo though, if they wanted GE on their service then they shouldn't have sold Rare to MS so it serves them right.
Cant expect to sell the company and still reap the benefits

Guys, go to Gamestation or Ebay and buy an N64 with Goldeneye. I still have mine and play it from time to time as a trip down memory lane.

Although it is great I can assure you you will be back on COD4 fairly quickly. It was a ground breaking product of its time and should be remembered fondly but don't try and turn the clock back; you will be disappointed.

Yes thats why I dont think it will sell 5 million as people at the end of the day will still mainly play cod/Halo.

I think the biggest think for it patrick is the online play option thats why so many people clamour for it.
I still have my old N64 and GE cart with all cheats unlocked that I enjoy from time to time its just that I will never have my friends around like when I was a teenager so it would be nice to play them and other friends who ive met since who played it.

I'm still very curious as to how it will play as I used an emulator so that I could use a 360 pad on the pc with it but its just not the same as it wasnt setup to use it.
Ahh well.

sorry guys!! just being optimistic, but

theres well over 60 million people in britain alone.......

5 million worldwide is a very small amount of people,

ok so if they just sold 1m its stil £7.2m for reletively nothing

as for getting a old N64, it wouldn't half cost a lot to run them cables for the joypads, and tv round to 3 of my mates house's,
how much do you rekon about 15 miles of extensions would cost ?????

Hey bazza,

I wi**** would sell that many really, it would get them to release more clasics.
But since there is only 10 million people on xbox live and a good third at least probably dont care for arcade games it would be interesting to see how many would purchase it

I'm not sure porting it from N64 code to 360 is that easy. Have you ever tried it? It had 2 months left to go. Even that is a reasonable number of man hours.

I wi**** could be updated and re-released though. I must say the graphics would probably look a bit shoddy, and used to run a little slow if there was too much action. If they'd been updating the textures and speeding up the engine, it might have been good. Of course if they were going to do that, they'd probably also change the gameplay and make it worse (as seems to be the way with remakes).

The network factor may not have been so great - wasn't half the fun playing on a tiny screen, split 4 ways, and being able to goad your friends to their face? Now all you'd have is audio chat over a headset.

Still, I'd like to have seen it released. I thought it was going to be put on the Wii Virtual Console!

Oh, and I don't think Nintendo ever owned Rare. Weren't Rare indie until they were bought by MS? Nintendo may have had some stake in them, but I don't think they owned them...

I don't get all you people saying Nintendo should sort themselves out. I mean, it's no skin off of their nose if it's released or not, but they do have the rights to it so in the end they can name the price.

It's Microsoft that you should be blaming for it not coming out, and their unwillingness to give Nintendo what they asked for.
