ELSPA responds to PM’s ‘concerns’ over games

Director general Paul Jackson ‘reassured’ that there has been no policy change

Following’s Gordon Brown’s comments to The Sun this week, ELSPA has been in dialogue with the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform – and has been told that despite the tabloid’s spin on the story, Brown’s opinion on games has not changed.

“We were obviously concerned by the Prime Minister’s comments yesterday on knife crime and computer games,” said Jackson. “Since this time we have been reassured by DBERR that the government’s position in this area has not altered; the Prime Minister remains concerned about the protection of children from access to certain new technologies which is why the government commissioned the Byron Review. We have been further reassured that there will be no changes to government policy in this area until Dr Byron publishes her findings at the end of March.”

Do ELSPA do anything other than issue statements (late)? I bet they have some lovely lunches with those politicians. "Shall we have another glass of wine, Paul?"

"Rather!"

the question is Bobby, do the government accept any repsonsibility for the woes of the country or is it all down to us lot? You would have thought 10 years of power and spin would yield the odd positive comment about the games industry and the odd negative one about the role of parents in bringing up children!

Video games are perceived badly by the general public. This didnt use to be the case 15 years ago. It all stems from Sony being too liberal with allowing any violent game to be released as long as it makes money. If the Playstation didnt have a library filled with so many 'hate' games, then the public wouldnt have a bad opinion of them.

That's as may be Ryu. But it does not disguise the fact that the Games Industry is an easy target and people like Brown making such damaging comments without any base of knowledge is just irresponsible and downright inflammatory.

The type of kids that join gangs and commit knife and gun crime are likely, in my opinion, to be the exact opposite to the type of kids who play games. The two are diometrically opposite in hobby styles.

...and why Games? Why not rap music, or violent movies? (both of which are more likely to encourage gang culture and violence). And both of which are US orientated and almost certainly earn less revenue for Mr Brown's coffers than our industry.

That is why his comments are so disturbing. Not because we are denying some games probably portray violence a little too readily, but because these comments from our leader show such ignorance of the value of our industry to the economy, aswell as such ignorance of the average age of gamers these days and of the beneficial effects of the new breed of games (WiiFit etc) and gamers.

I hope Paul Jackson continues to push this to the people who have Brown's ear and suggests strongly, in Paul's excellent diplomatic way, that Mr B actually does some research before firing off such inane soundbites, Good Luck PJ. The industry is with you here.

Yes, why not films and TV? Take Gordon Ramsey and any number of 'cooking' programs he's in. Here we have a foul mouthed, obnoxious, bully airing on prime time television several times a week. Sorry, but I fail to see how championing such a horrible indvidual is a good thing.

I bet if you sat Gordon down and played a game with him he'd love it! FF or Halo should convert him.

I agree with comment number 6, however, in the last two months, I've also seen Gordon Ramsey save two marriages, convert a bunch of juvenile offenders in to food loving chefs and turn countless failing businesses into high flying resturants.

Perhaps we should get him on the case with this argument?!

There's no telling what he might be able to do regarding this situation?!

Gordon uses us as a political football to deflect blame from his own failings. And all ELSPA can do is mouth platitudes. Pathetic.
They should stand up and say what we all think. That would get our side of the story into the press. And maybe get sufficient scorn poured on Gordon that he thinks twice about using us as a political football in future.

Why should there be strict bans on violent video games when the parents allow their sons/daughters to play these games , I mean common you need an i.d to buy a rated T game now little alone a rated M game.

Bruceongames, yes, you clearly understand politics! Guns blazing attitude is the exact wrong reaction to governement.

ELSPA and the communication they clearly have with government is brilliant and educting from the inside is the way forward.
