Microsoft names freebie offer to appease those who suffered online issues over Christmas

After previously saying that it would seek to compensate members after many experienced Xbox Live troubles over the Christmas period, Microsoft has confirmed that it is to offer recently released shooter Undertow free next week.

Major Nelson spills the beans on his blog, linking to fellow Microsoft blog Gamerscore, which states:

“We recently announced that all Xbox Live members (Gold and Silver) around the world would have access to a full Xbox Live Arcade game to download free of charge.

We’re pleased to announce that beginning next Wednesday through to Sunday, Xbox Live members worldwide can download the full version of the recent award-winning Xbox Live Arcade game, Undertow.”

The most obvious reaction to expect is complaints from those who have already downloaded the game. There’s no further word on Microsoft on whether there will be a further offering to appease such gamers.

I don't know why anyone would want to download anything because, as soon as your 360 dies via RROD or otherwise and you get a replacement...
...you will not be able to play it offline nor will any other gamer tags used be able to play it at all.

DRM is way more of an issue than any short inconvieneance of an outage of Live.
It's been a problem for paying customers from the begining.
That's not even counting thsoe who chose to upgrade to an Elite who won't even get a consideration of license transfer or points refunded to re-download what they already paid for to begin with.

The download is a nice jesture but not really any solution to the shortcomings of the 360 and Live downloads.
It would be interesting to see a story on the subject of DRM and it's effect on honest and paying customers.

Just a note, Undertow is not being offered free as an apology or compensation. If you read the letter by Marc Whitten, the free game was being given as a thank you for supporting them and sharing in their success. The letter does address the down time, but the game is not mentioned as anything more than a thank you. You can view the letter from the “Support Home” page from Xbox.

No one important

Just for the record . . .
According to Major Nelson's blog. Anyone who has already purchased Under Tow need to contact Microsoft Support, whereby an alternative game will be offered.

Come on Jess - that may be the company line, but we all know what this is about in reality.

im raging with xbox live. UNDERTOW! its possibly the worst game ive played in my 24 years and 9 months of existence in this god forsaken crust of a planet we call earth! we should have got the chance to select our own game. or better yet. every member with a live subscription should have been given "x" amount of market place points for free. instead, mr gates has though... "hmm lets see what can we give them to shut them the hell up......i know..... a **** under water game with as much appeal as a £1000 pound a ride hooker with aids" sorry bill. but no thanks. i downloaded the game. but soon delteted it from my xboxs memory. its not worth the 25 mbs or so it consumes.... ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH im so mad. ps - i got suspended from live for a day, all because my gamer tag bio. was a bit. lets say "risque" whats that all about. ill tell yuo. ive pumped some infant at c&c tiberium wars. and hes went crying to his mom. then shes looked at my pro. and went...... "die bucking fastards?" "hmmm well see about that..... bobby, get my cell phone......" arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...........END OF RANT!
