Microsoft said they shipped 17million consoles globally, so thats an estimated 15-16million consoles actually sold whereas Sony's 5.6million figure was announced early in the summer of 2007. What followed was a global price drop, and they're now estimated to have sold around 9-10million consoles. In Europe, as the article focuses on, Sony is doing better in hardware sold than Microsoft so its not beyond them to overtake Microsoft in that region later this year.

It's the complete opposite in North America however.

The 360 is relying heavily on the states.

In Europe (as the article states - and this has been said for a while through numerous sources) the ps3 is outselling the 360.

The states is very different but the key to all of this is that there are more consoles sales (all of the them combined) in Europe (PAL) than in any other territory making this far more important.

Id the ps3 were to over take the 360 (which is only performing well in the UK in PAL) then the ps3 would have the lead on it in 2 out o***ey territories. Currently even the Wii isn't ahead in the states which isn't a big suprise as you'd expect the Americans to go for an American console in the same way the Japaneese won't go for an American console

Sales statistics showed the 360 and PS3 on the same plateau.. until recently. The PS3 curve is steadily rising over the 360.

Furthermore, if you look at only Europe sales, you'll see the PS3 curve is way ahead of the 360 curve and a summer estimate looks right on schedule.

It's also important to point out that the 360 isn't even on the map in Japan. Plus with blu-ray winning the format war and the PS3 being the only future proof BR player (since BR 2.0 is coming), sales will very soon approach the 360 in the states as well. I'm not sure it'll be as soon in the US, but with HD tvs proliferating quickly, people will be looking for the best value on players to exploid their new sets.

Anyway 360 does outsell PS3 in the US but then MS is an American company as is Sony a Japanese company so theirs sells better over there. Europe has no console manufactures so no matter who is selling more over here in Europe we will always get shafted. Eg release dates and price. So frankly I couldn’t care less who sells more or less as long as a flow of games keeps coming which for my 360 at least they do. No dig intended. I don’t have a PS3 for the simple reason I can’t afford one, it has no games I want that I can’t get on my 360 and I have no need for Blu-Ray at this current time. I would also like to point out I don’t have a HD-Drive add-on either I use my games console for GAMES!

It has more games and exclusives, it has games that once belonged to the PS platform, has the best online, best selection of online content, best controller, best interface, all games are live aware so total interactivity with friends even when watching movies!

Overall the 360 has the most potential the PS3 is trailing behind.

I think what Sony have forgot is that the rise in sales is probably down to the fact that most people where buying the 60 gig version, before you couldn't get a BC PS3.

If Sony has reduced the price of the console as they say, then they can afford to drop it. It should be offset by increases in revenue from game and BD sales.

Traditionally consoles have been sold at or near a loss and the money made from games.

Unless PS3 can get exclusive rights to Halo 4 they don't stand a chance against Xbox. The 360 has too many good games. They don't make money off selling the consoles. They make it off the games.

Sony has its victory. By putting bluray in the ps3 it will win the HD war. then once everybody upgrades their dvd player to match their HDTVs they will buy a bluray player or the ps3. then sony is making money on bluray movie sales and bluray game sales. they can lose money for the first 3 years on ps3 hardware because they will end up selling tens of millions more after 3 years. look at the ps2. so the hardware may even out but sony will dominate because it has the HD game/movie market

Oh dear, how childish this has become and yet again started by Ryu in fantasy land. I'm betting Ryu is an American, as just like his government he's always trying to start some kind of war. What makes me laugh the most is that I'm sure I've read somewhere that he has a PS3 as well as an XBox, well somehow I just don't believe it because if he did he wouldn't go around bashing it all the time, unless he just has money to burn. I wish I was in the fortunate enough position to be able to own both but I'm not as they both are great with some great games on both.

Anyway back to the topic - from my evidence Reeves is right. The XBox is only selling now in the states and as pointed out correctly above that's because it's an American company. American's seem to forget about the rest of the world being a bigger place than them, half them still think we live in the "United States of Europe" and Europe is a country. I have a UK based shop and since Xmas, we've not sold ANY XBox 360 hardware, we've sold plenty of PS3s (and more PS2s than XBoxes too). I'm not going to talk about any other console sales as that's not Reeves referred to in his orignal speech. In fact we've even had one XBox brought back that was bought in Novemeber come back in the last couple of weeks with the Red Ring. To date, ZERO PS3 returns. That sort of reliability is only good for the PS3.

Game sales too are higher on PS3. Let's not forget that many people over Xmas bought the 40gb PS3 and DON'T CARE about backward compatibility as they want PS3 games for the console - which there are plenty of now. And the average Joe on the street that doesn't read forums like this, is the sort of person that really thinks Need for Speed Underground is the best game they've ever played. They probably don't even have the PS3 hocked up online so they wouldn't know how it performs that way. The numbers speak for themselves, the PS3 is rocketing towards the sales of the XBox and considering it's not even beem out in the UK for a year, these figures are mightily, mightily impressive. We're in the process in our small store of now increasing the PS3 presence whilst shifting all the XBox to a smaller area. We're now at the stage where we are ordering more PS3 games to fill the shelves than XBox, because they are selling more.

Going back to previous points, someone above mentioned exclusives for the PS3 in 2008. There appear to be lots and the biggest requests we get in store is people asking when GT 5 and MGS4 are coming out. These are going to be MASSIVE titles. We get lots of requests for GTA IV on both platforms as expected. And post 12 (AP) you incorrectly mocked Haze as coming out next year. Wrong - read the MCV article properly and the post that goes with it. Haze is coming out in fiscal 2008-2009 not the last quarter of 2008-2009. This could simply mean the game is coming out 2 weeks after it was originally coming out. Fiscal 2008-09 starts the beginning of April and that's when Haze will come out.

So stop all these childish attacks, I for one would like to see all the consoles sell well so I can get a lovely bonus, but if they don't, from a commercial point of view, we're only going to back the one(s) that sell or appear to be the way forward. 2 years ago that was 360, since September/October it's been the PS3 (again I'm not mentioning the OTHER consoles...). That's the situation in the UK and I'm guessing other parts of Europe are finding this out too. So read Mr Reeves article again from the top all you XBox "fan boys" and you will see that what he says isn't lies or BS, it's fact and it comes from retailers like us.

@The Retailer, you're absolutely right, I misinterpreted the news that Haze was delayed (AGAIN!).

But I don't agree with some of your other interesting statements.

I live in the UK where I assume you do too? Two of my close friends used to have Playstations (1 & 2). Both of them bought Xbox 360s towards the end of last year and have no plans to get PS3s. In fact, out of all the people I know only a grand total of ONE has a PS3 while about TEN have Xbox 360.

Plus, I'd like you to point me at this store of yours that is selling more PS3 games then Xbox because everyone I speak to in all the game stores say the small PS3 game display (compared to the larger Xbox 360 one) is because the consoles aren't selling and neither are the games.

You say the PS3 began to be THE console in demand in September/October? The month Halo 3 launched?! You are joking, even if you don't know you are...!

That's why I said SINCE September/October - after Halo 3 hit the shelves. That is when we started to see a turnaround in sales, i.e. just before Xmas. It started slowly but then overtook. Yet another example of not reading properly before you comment.

Figures speak for themselves, but the PS3 IS in demand now (finally) and more and more are being sold. Maybe our shop is a fluke, but all I'm saying is that Reeve's claims can be backed up by our sales figures. And by what he's saying, we're not alone. That's why we plan to be ahead of the game and start backing PS3 from now more than the 360. We've Valentines day and Easter coming put soon, so we're going to push the PS3 a bit more. Don't get me wrong, we're still going to market the 360 as we still have stock, but we're simply following consumer trends.

I work as a manage of computer game store and I really haven't been selling that many PS3s recently. Probably the same amount as I've been selling 360's, as to the games 360 are selling at least 5:1. I think both machines have their good points but in my opinion I still prefer the 360 because it's got a lot more games. Nearly all the good games on the PS3 are out on 360 and at the momen there is nothing great on PS3. That doesn't mean I'm not going to buy one later in the year when some decent exclusives cme out and bluray picks up a bit more.

PS3 games are now being found in more and more stores which they weren't when the thing first came out. My local Sainsbury's now is starting doing the games as well as Tesco which had them longer. But I've now seen that my local WH Smith's are no longer doing 360 games but have some PS3 titles. Perhaps times are changing. I have neither the 360 or PS3 BTW, but I have plans to get a PS3 when Gran Turismo comes out. Again maybe it is a sign of things to come, I'll be adding to Mr Reeve's statistic, and I bet I'm not the only one. Also you only have to go into HMV and see the Blu-Ray shelf getting bigger by the week. If PS3's weren't selling, then why would HMV bother to increase their Blu-Ray shelf space? After all from what I've heard the PS3 is the most popular Blu-Ray player.

When I play online with my playstation 3 I find a whole bunch of people from europe which make me think that what they are posting is true. When Sony align the ps to the Playstation 3 remote play and their video streamer things are going to change. Sony video gaming market is holding with few games of their own and the promise of Metal gear. Resistance two should be a great game and if I am not wrong soon they will be catching up. This is basically some astounding evidence for the strength of brand loyalty. That the ps3 can come back from the position it's in, without any decent software is miraculous, and proof that the playstation brand still carries huge weight.

I just don't know why: the games don't cut it, and with a vastly superior games catalogue and a huge online network, the 360 is the clear choice for me.

I sold my PSP because the games were atrocious, I didn't want a PS3 at the £299 mark, because there are no games I want on it. I'm pretty sure though most people who had a PS1 and PS2 will buy the PS3 even if the games lineup was nothing but defecation simulators.

People you are right Playstation 3 launched with one or two games which were worth to play. Resistance Fall of Man in my opinion is a great game. Motor Storm and Grand Turismo are good games but not enough. But what about the posibility to look forward You can't deny the fact that High Definition technology is cool and it is affordable in a PlayStation3 not to mention that it is an awsome music reproduction machine ha,none of you use it to listen to music...or watch movies or to communicate with your friends. Open your eyes. I am a teacher in The United States my students are begining to talk more about PlayStation3 than Xbox. It is true Sony have to catch up with games titles. Xbox 360 won the first and the second rounds. In the United States most kids own an Xbox 360 my son does. To communicate and be with his friends I am the PlayStation3 man playing with people from all over the world. Xbox 360 is not so different from Play Station. I would say they are almost the same machine with different brand names. But Microsoft took care not to go beyond as Sony did, they sold the High Definition dvd apart, they also sold the wireless antenna apart and they charge a fee for their internet servce xbox life. Open your eyes the table is beginning to turn Sony is narrowing the gap and catching up and Xbox will adapt to the trends in the market. remember that both machines hold almost the same technology. For xbox 360 it would be easy to adapt a blue ray dvd if it wins the dvd war and will keep in business stop arguing about things which are unimportant and predict what is coming video conferences, cooperative gaming Gears of Wars great choice of xbox I feel sorrow for Nintendo and the fun of playing Super Mario or Zelda in my opinion the best games ever made to entertain children and adults. The problem with the whole 'ps3 is a media machine' argument is that it just doesn't surpass the 360 for media. I use my 360 as a media extender, and so its presence on my home network and its ability to stream anything from my pc mean that, coupled with a pc and networked, the 360 is actually a far more useful media tool.

Personally Im happy to see it start doing well.

Why? This is an article ABOUT EUROPE AND PAL REGIONS! Why do yanks think they are the only people that matter in the world. The marketplace out side Disneyland is bigger and to Sony more important.

Who cares who wins at the end, one thing sure is they will be both there for the next nextgen war in x years so pick your favorite and enjoy...Picking both if you can afford it is even better so you can play all exclusives game (wich are not legions) BUT, Sony fans must admit most of multi platform games look better on 360 despite the more powerful ps3 harware....

Sony seem to think otherwise. They have now lowered their sales forecast for this year to 9.5 million ( From still on track for 11 million two days ago) This is 200,000 less that they claimed they had sold up to last week.

Go Figure !!!!

Obviously at some point 'normal' 360 will also buy a PS3 for certain PS3 and Blu Ray releases. Why pick sides? Buy both if you're an adult with a decent income.

I'll continue to buy whatever hardware I need to play whatever games I want. End of story really.

o and by the way, im not naive enuf to not know that times for gaming are changing significantly. but does anyone rememba the time when people actually argued over the games like on nes, snes, n64, ps1 etc... not the consoles themselves. it amazes me how much ppl say 'the games sel the console' but no1 ever says anything towards them. p.s. i think people shud stop expecting miracles to happen becus neither consoles are going to turn out any revolutionary games. theyre averaging themselves out now and ppl shud be happy with what they have until next gen when the *****ing can start all over agen, yay! lol (sense sarcasm), meanwhile i think ill actually enjoy the games rather than turning them into a c**** rather than a hobby. p.p.s. so how many of u have sony and msoft hired, becus there are ppl who get paid thousands to do what everybody here is doing lmao

microsoft is cutting the price of all 360 consoles in march 14th
the arcade console will be down from £199.99 to £159.99
The main xbox 360 pro console will be cut from £249.99 to £199.99
And just to finish the 120 gig Elite cosole will be cut from £299.99 to just £259.99

this will now make some of the xbox 360 range lower than the wii

Problem is, Microsoft also make windows.
Why would you want a console made by the people responsible for the catastrophe that has always been Windows?
Sony on the other hand have been reputed for selling high quality well built electronics.
That fact is supported, for me, by the reality that when I buy something that is Sony, it always lasts a long time before breaking. Unlike when I buy a hitachi or goodmans or toshiba. Equally unlike when I install a Windows installation, it has to be reinstalled because it breaks, or just stops functioning correctly, within 6 months. Whereas my Linux has been going for 2 years without problems.
In comparison to car manufacturers, Sony could be considered the Rolls Royce, and Microsoft could be considered the Skoda, of games consoles and computer operating systems.

I have had one Sony Ericsson phone that was incredibly reliable, brilliant in every way, and extremely well designed. Every other Sony device I have had - excluding my PS1 but INCLUDING my PS2 - has failed within 12 months. Meanwhile my Windows installations are near eternal. I think that - despite taking very good care of my electronics equiment - I have just had bad luck with Sony, and I am still very much into their design ethos.

My point is, that this depends very much on personal experience, and brand loyalty. A point that is concisely demonstrated by your comparison of Sony to Rolls Royce and Microsoft to Skoda. Skoda have a VERY high customer satisfaction and reliability rating these days, much higher than Rolls - who sell much more cutting edge technology to a more demanding market. Meanwhile however, this is not reflected in public opinion, because Skoda, like Microsoft, are the brand that many love to hate.
That said, of course RROD is an issue, but at least Microsoft are supporting it. Sony service and replacement has always been satisfactory, but never as good as the repair turn-around I experienced with my 360. I would be curious to see what would happen should my PS3, or all PS3's develop a similar fault.
We can only hope that next time round Sony's offering has games worthy of it, and is at a better price point next time round, whilst Microsoft's console isn't hampered by stupid reliability issues that shouldn't have got past QT. As for Nintendo, I'm sure they'll mash up another ridiculous gimmicky toy in their bargain component shed, and put them both to shame - in the sales department- again!

I have ps3... And I couldnt care less what 360 fanboys think of it.. Fanboys will be fanboys..
