PS3 tech contributed to GTAIV delay

Rockstar admits that PS3’s challenging architecture contributed to delay of key upcoming title

With a firm release date now seemingly set in stone by Rockstar, the Grand Theft Auto IV developer has admitted that familiarising themselves with the unique architecture of Sony’s PS3 was a factor in the game’s delayed shipping date.

Speaking to MTV, Rockstar’s vice president of product development Jeronimo Barrera stated: "It's really no surprise to anybody that the PS3 was definitely a contributing factor to that.

"We wanted the time, and I think we made the right choice. It was very difficult to make the choice because everybody wanted it. But we thought, you know, what with that extra bit of time, it's just going to be that much better and there will be more systems out.

“Now, we're neck and neck. That's not an issue anymore. But back then that was something we were taking into account. That's not to say there's anything wrong with the PS3 version. It's awesome. They're both identical."

More work to write the same level of game. Just what the industry ordered. Not.

You sound surprised. The Sony consoles have always been harder to develop for whether due to bad tools or complicated hardware. But it's that complexity that allows developers to continue improving the quality of games for the 6 years before they release a new console. By basing the Xbox on a PC it makes it easy to port games from DirectX, but also means they need to upgrade it every 3 years, just like a 'gaming PC'!

Is it a good thing to have a platforms potential unrealised until it's halfway 'dead'? Especially compared to others that are fully utilised from day one?

This makes me sick.

I hate Sony for this, I could have been playing this game over Christmas.

Don't blame Sony, it's Rockstar that decided to develop GTA4 for two consoles (or rather the checkbook of M$). They could have decided to put the game out for the 360 when they originally announced, but the truth is BOTH versions were not ready at the time (as you will see in press coverage from 6 months ago), so it's not surprising that they are following the trend of using the PS3 as a scapegoat. That excuse won't work for much longer and development companies will have to start giving you real reasons... or more lies.
