‘Virtual PE’ lessons given thumbs up by Department of Health
The Government has endorsed proposals to use Nintendo’s Wii as part of its curriculum for PE lesson in schools.
The Independent On Sunday reports that the console has succesfully been used in trials in five schools in Worcestershire to tempt pupils into ‘virtual PE’ – and could now be taken nationwide.
The move following a report in the British Medical Journal which found active video games ‘significantly increased participants’ energy expenditure’ compared to other systems.
The IoS reports that the departments responsible for improving fitness among the nation's young, including the Department of Health, have backed the project – with a possible pilot scheme in the pipeline.
A DoH spokesman said: "We welcome the positive impact that innovations like these can have as a first step towards getting people to participate in a range of physical activities and to enjoy the many benefits of an active lifestyle."

Oh god please say this is'nt true!
Yippe flippin' doo! another excuse for the government to sell off even more school playing fields, have they not seen this??
Surely the only excuse introducing Wii consoles into schools is to enable faster training of our future remote operated RAF planes? They are not and never will be a substitue for playing football, netball, x-country running, although they are a fun console to play.
Re: Oh god please say this is'nt true!
this government is a joke....why did all you fools vote the*****t them out asap!
hope i was at school
Sounds like a good idea to me. Wish i was at school in the modern days ...when i was a kid we never had anything like that.
If schools keep the traditional sports and virtual PE as an add on then why not? would have been nice if article mentioned what exactly Virtual PE is and i hope it does not replace traditional PE as readers before me feared....

YAYYYYYYYYY NINTENDO 6 SONY 0
Well…
Sony are going to release an Education Pack SKU later this year.
Re: Well…
and so Gordon will be remembered (by the kids) as the man who let them play computer games during school time. One way to buy future votes...
Re: Well…
Yeah, let them play games at school, whilst also banning them from existence because they're too violent.
Is everyone looking forward to Buzz: The Schools Quiz??
Re: Re: Well…
I as a technology teacher of the disabled use wii all the time. As a tool for exercise social interaction therapy etc it is amazing. A child would rather play and learn a game all night than do a homework assignment and quit in the middle. A gamer would stay up all night and get to the next level rather than quit . hink about it

I would like to play with my wee when i get home, but mommy and daddy say that they it is unhealthy. Is this right? Please, when they went out i played with my wee, it was very fun.
