So that's Xbox 360 at 7.2M ahead with a 12 month head start in the US/Japan and 16 months in Europe.

Sorry Ryu, you're telling us that the 360 has sold 17.7m in EUROPE!??? Because the PS3 has sold 5m in Europe and I think you're comparing the world sales of the 360 (which has been out over 2 years) to the European sales of the PS3 - which has been out in Europe for 10 months.

Again according to the above,PS3 has sold 5 million in Europe, but only 9.7 million worldwide?? So Europe is their biggest market by far. And they released much later in Europe th****A or Japan. I think you may find that this, like the PS3 sold 1.2 million over the Xmas period is just Sony trying to keep the hype going. Before Xmas, everyone was saying - 2008 is the year PS3 will finally come good - Looik at the exclusives, none at all on 360. Everything coming out on PS3 now.
Now, after 1 month of 2008, two of those PS3 exclusives have slipped to 2009, 3 games at least have been cancelled and two have gone exclusive to 360. Plus lots of 360 exclusives keep popping up. But only the same PS3 ones.

This is only my opinion after the first reading of this Article, but still I find it amusing that Sony compares it's first Christmas with Ps3 sales against Microsoft's 3rd year of Christmas sales.

The fact that Microsoft is still shifting these units at a rate of knots in its third Christmas of release at pretty much the original asking price of Launch. I see they're RRP's 249.99 as opposed to the 279.99 they've been for the past couple of years, this versus Sony's discontinuation of the 60gb PS3 unit and launch of the far poorer optioned non backwards compatible 4ogb Unit. Yet Microsoft still seems to be shifting a steady number of Units...... Time will tell obviously, let's just hope that the bullish claims of CEO's and the like don't further spoil our entertainment.

When all's said and done. I have a 360 and make no further judgements on Sony than those that are already out there. Throwing numbers around and being full of bravado is most often the behaviour of a company struggling - if the numbers are correct and their first Christmas has been good then congrats, but will they be saying that after 3 years with an inferior version of their latest console on release at a higher price than the standard version of their opponents machine.

I'm confused. If Stringer was referring to European or Japanese sales he could get away with this statement but there is no way he could claim to have beaten Xbox 360 Christmas sales in the states.

Similarly, most financial analysts now agree that Sony will come no where near their official target of selling 11 million PS3s by April. They say the figure is likely to be 8 million. Yet Microsoft have just published official figures showing sales of the Xbox 360 increased greatly within the last four months.

Someone is spouting bull and given Sonys comments aren't backed with figures and Microsofts are in official financial reportings I know who I believe...

Considering it launched at £425.00 with no games, almost zero online support and a multi-format release schedule that is 6 months behind the 360, I'd say its the PS3 owners who are suckers?!

What happened to the original XBox, disappeared within a couple of years, then replaced by a console that breaks after weeks. And now they're talking about the NEXT XBox. For some reason people are laughing about the statement that the PS3 will win the console war.

Sorry, guys, but this has been a belief that has been held by analysts and a number of [neutral] members of the industry for a long time; even before the console was launched.

However, the win will NOT be by a huge margin and will NOT happen all that quickly. The PS3 won't outsell the Xbox 360 by 100 million, or even 50 million. 10 - 20 is a more realistic view point on what will happen.

Personally own opinion is that the PS3 will overtake the 360 in Europe by Christmas this year. America will follow sometime in 2011, by which time MSFT will have annouced the successor to the 360 and claimed the console race is over any way (ie - bad losers).

That's crazy, they should be disappointed. I'm not doubting sony will beat 360 eventually in sales. I'm just saying they are insane to think that the ps3 is successful by only just outselling a 3 year old machine. They should be wiping the floor with microsoft.

I think by now everyone has seen Uncharted and amazing it looks and plays, not to mention that it is the first PS3 full exclusive. It even looked better than any 360 game yet.
2 things:
1:360 will fall soon cause it doesn't have enough space on its DVDs to make any better ones
2:Microsoft was cheap about 360s parts which led its game to a fast grave with the red ring of death
all in all, If I wanted a good entertainment and long life one too I would chose PS3, I don't want to ship a broken console every month, but I'd rather to pick a vacuum and clean the dust of my game console every month.

Why is it that Xbox fanboys think that only the American market is important?

This article is about Europe and PAL territories (not America and not worldwide sales figures). It is not in anyway controversial to say that PS3 is outselling the 360 in these territories (as it is also doing in Japan) and it therefore stands to reason that the PS3 user base will surpass that of the 360 in these areas if it continues to sell more than the 360.

If we DO want to look at the picture worldwide... the only territory where the 360 is outselling the PS3 is in America. There is controversy around whether the PS3 is currently selling more units worldwide than the 360 (VGchartz.com) but what figures are available suggests it is pretty close.

Also it is worth noting, that if the PS3 continues to keep pace with the 360, the 7 million unit headstart the 360 has mean less and less as time goes by. If the PS3 continues to keep pace with the 360 it will erode the 360's market share (e.g. 9m PS3s v 16m 360s = 36% are PS3s, 50m v 57m = 46%).

Apologies to Nintendo for not factoring them in these calculations as they are running away with the market all by themselves at the moment... but the point is to illustrate that if the PS3 and 360 worldwide sales continue to be locked so closely together, then the 7 million unit gap that 360 fanboys revert to will probably not count for much in the long run.

Secondly I'm on neither side in this stupid "console war" I stated sony should be wiping the floor with microsoft. But are no way near doing it. I said Sony will outsell the 360. But By god they are giving themselves a hard task. And they aren't doing themselves favours with all this "we sold more" against a 3 year old console.

I just think sony need to concerntrate on other things, instead of facts that aren't impressive.

The only people who should be allowed to post on here shouldn't care as if your retail neither hardware suppliers will make you rich on the margins you get, it's the sales of those little blu-ray's or DVD's that matter.If your a publisher then the royalty' s you pay I bet aint that much different either. Microsoft are being cheap, using the same dvd drive, aint we seen a dvd drive before on the previous gen? at the moment they are using Dual-Layer discs which holds 9gig to create games, aint we seen dual layer discs on the ps2? they are stuck to the ground while they cannot create games on a hd disc, as people will need a HD DRIVE that cost like another 100 bucks. Why couldnt they have the HD Drive built into the bladdy Elite? Sony on the other hand with Blu-Ray, having the Blu-Ray Quad Layer discs that holds 100gig coming out this year (Sqaure-Enix who are making the new Final Fantasy 13 are using these discs to make the game better with better textures and scenes), in around 2009 the 8 layered Blu-Ray disc that holds 200gig will be out too - and the ps3 will only play these discs with firmware updates. I believe microsoft will fall, dvd's will extinct for sure. unless they add their hd drive into their machine ;) i believe the ps3 will rise this year with all the exclusives coming out and again im not a fanbaby who has wars against other consoles its hilarious, im here to reveal facts and truth and i own both of the consoles and they both are great.

the only reason xbox 360 is selling at all is because the ps3 was released so late and people got board of waiting for it so they got the xbox. also many of xboxes sales are faulse. most people are trading in there xboxs for ps3s so ... face the facts ps3 owns!
