Technology giant remains defiant but admits it is ‘disappointed’ by retailer’s decision

Toshiba has spoken out in response to Woolworths’ announcement that it is to phase out HD-DVD from its stores in March.

The retailer revealed today that it would only sell the format via its website in future, after Blu-Ray outsold HD-DVD by ten-to-one in its stores over Christmas.

European assistant general manager in Toshiba’s UK consumer products division Olivier Van Wynendaele told MCV:

“We have been hugely successful in expanding the number of consumers owning HD-DVD players. UK consumers can now pick-up an HD-DVD player for less than £150, around half the cost of other HD formats. Even before pricing reached this level, HD-DVD represented more than 60 per cent of the overall standalone high definition market.

Trolltech

“Just as importantly for movie retailers, HD-DVD has always enjoyed greater software sales per player than any other HD format. In fact, HD-DVD owners have already bought around 3.5 movies each, compared to less than one movie sold per Blu ray device.

“While we’re disappointed by Woolworths’ decision, it is extremely early to spot which format will eventually win. As the figures I mention show – where consumers have a choice, they choose HD-DVD.

"We’re confident that HD-DVD’s affordability, fantastic choice of movies, great consumer experience and upcoming promotions will help it continue to strengthen its share of the market.”

Managed to get the Toshiba HD-EP30 for £120 on amazon.co.uk! For downstairs and have the 360 hd-dvd add-on in my bedroom.

HD-DVD is a much better format than blu-ray.

So you keep telling us Ryu... Glad you have the money to throw away. I just wonder if you'll find a store that will be able to sell you a HD-DVD disc in the near future to play on one of your machines...

"HD-DVD owners have already bought around 3.5 movies each, compared to less than one movie sold per Blu ray device."

Good piece of spin! This statement clearly doesn't tell the whole story. Let's say there are 1,000,000 HD-DVD players out there, that would mean 3,500,000 HD-DVD discs. However, there could be 10,000,000 BR players out there and if each person has less than one BR disc, there could be 8-9,000,000 BR discs outs there. So actually there is probably twice as many BR discs as HD-DVDs discs, and an installed base of 10 times the number of BR players to HD-DVD players.. Sorry Mr Toshiba, I'm not buying it.

HD and Bluray are both stupid, portable hard drives are the best in terms of performance and adaptability and i would dearly like to see those as the dominant form of media, not that i expect it to happen

With the rather good quality of download speed and so on of the Microsoft HD downloads, it will hopefully only be a matter of time until downloaded HD films and TV programmes are the way forwards. Hopefully there will soon be services offering downloads to buy (not rent as on the 360) of HD films etc. I would rather spend £50 on a 250-500GB HDD for my PC than £150+ for a player. If there is already a legal place to buy a large selection of films in HD for the UK, then I'd appreciate a link. :)

See MCV is full of idiotic fanboys, who know nothing about games in general or digital distribution I suggest you go back to whoring whatever asshat console you own.

Toshiba’s Olivier Van Wynendaele is either living
in a fantasy world with Peter Pan or has no clue
as what the consumer is doing with High Def.
The president of Toshiba - Atsutoshi Nishida
should be sacked for his hand in HD DVD failures.

I believe Microsoft have played a large part in the slow downfall of HD-DVD. If they included this drive in a new Xbox360 the sales for HD-DVD would be far greater.
Btw, for anyone who owns a HD-DVD drive, you can import any USA HD-DVDs and they will play in the UK, as they are not copy protected.

Downloads.. Oh yeah they're going to take off real time soon...(Sarcasm).

Can you just imagine the older generation getting into downloads and having their own home server in the house. They can't even record on a video player so you can just imagine them using downloads.

And can you imagine Xmas day as well, Mummy says to little Johnny "Here you go son, I bought you a download for Xmas. So you've nothing to open today but if you go and boot up your computer, in three hours time you can have your download I bought you."

Get with the times people. We're not having downloads for years to come. MS killed HD-DVD when it didn't include the drive in the 360 - a decision it's probably regretting. But it won't care, it'll screw Toshiba over just like it's customers and release a new console in the next couple of years with a BR drive. Thus making you pay even more. Anyone that thinks Sony are not being good to their customers should think again as they're not screwing you over in the same way MS are.

Oh and this double/treble/quadruple posting malarkey is due to poor programming on the MCV site. People aren't hitting submit twice, it's occurring when you revisit the page having submitted before. Sort it out MCV. That's why timings on the posts are way out - look when the posts were originally submitted and then look at the duplicates.

actually its pressing the back button which causes it. Look at the url after you post, it will have something like "%~submit" at the end. which is what causes the double posting.

People. just follow the link you clicked on originally

Digital delivery!? Considering UK broadband speeds against the rest of Europe, I doubt digital delivery will take off for a long time indeed. Even if you pay, say for Option 3 BT Broadband you're very unlikely to get anywhere near the speeds advertised. Who's prepared to wait three to four hours to receive the amount of data contained on a BD disk?

A measly 10,000 home will have 100mb fibre broadband installed by 2020

http://news.bbc.co...6.stm

NTL (Virgin Media) is possibly in the best position as they’re upgrading to offer 50mb by 2009 for all their broadband, but then I live next to a town center and we’re not cabled in our area, which is a shame. Oh, and their customer service is unbelivably bad, ask any NTL/Virgin Media customer.

ps. The fanboy attitude in this website is absolutely unbelievable.

I believe that Blu-Ray will ultimately end up winning the format war.

For those of you old enough to remember VHS vs Betamax, Sony were the main advocate/protagonists of the Betamax format, and they lost out heavily back then.

Sony are the main backers of Blu-Ray. I cannot see history repeating itself.
