US games retailer heads for UK

Play N Trade to do battle with GAME, ‘British retailers behind the times,' claims chain

After years of speculation, a major US games retailer has finally promised to take on GAME in the UK – and the shock news is it’s not GameStop.

Play N Trade, which boasts that it is the fastest-growing specialist chain over the pond, has unveiled a battleplan that could see it launch its first store here by the end of this year.

The franchise-based company told MCV it didn’t fear the ‘outdated’ UK competition – and claimed that it can single-handedly push the market forward.

“The US is definitely ahead in the games retailing arena,” Play N Trade CEO Roger Lloyd told MCV. “Our in-store design is very cutting-edge, and our training, support and customer service is second-to-none.

“Our entry point into the UK will move the evolution of games stores forward faster. We’re going to raise the bar.”
Lloyd added that Play N Trade is confident that it will eventually have outlets “all over the UK”, and that nothing will stand in the retailer’s way – including GAME’s foothold on the market.

“GAME has a very strong presence in the UK and beyond, but I like competition,” he said. “GAME will have to adapt to Play N Trade – we will push them to new heights. Ultimately, the consumer will win out.

“There’s no reason why, if we go in with a strong business plan and get the right people, right relationships and right distribution model, we can’t come in and have the same growth as we have seen in the US.”

Play N Trade – which has over 100 stores in the US – plans to open its first UK outlet in the second quarter of 2009. But it told MCV that if the perfect ‘master franchisor’ – or middleman between the US office and UK stores – comes forward, it could launch over here much sooner.

“If we find a very strong, qualified retailer that could be our master franchisor, we’ll move in even faster,” said Roger Lloyd. “The key is getting the right person who’ll carry the brand, maintain our culture and maintain the feel of the company.”

I am fed up of having to go into GAME and educating the peons that work there about things THEY are supposed to be selling.

They usually have no interest in games and have only tiny bit of knowledge about games consoles and well everything in store.

Many of the ones I meet are usually nice people but when I go into Gamestation it not only feels more like a games store but the staff usually know what I am talking about and can converse very well about gaming.

The only thing I do not like is when you have fanboy type staff that try to sell you something you do not want.

Confident statements there Roger.

I see your point but in my opinion, customer service will be your toughest challenge and I very much doubt that you'll be able to make a difference to the UK high street.....

The British punters are a very different from the American ones and I wonder how effective your franchise plan can be in the UK's current retail climate?!

I'm sure there will be some stores that will be spot on and have an indie feel that caters for the local's tastes but I'm equally sure that there will be plenty of stores that will be like CEX at Rathbone place.

Dont want to 'diss' them too much but that store in particular and a majority of its staff are pretty rubbish.

I can see you starting off well simply because people will know that its an American brand and will be interested in what you have to offer but I dont know how long that will last?

Either way good luck to you because I for one would love to walk into a games shop and be greeted by friendly knowledgable staff who have great games at great prices.

I take it you have never been to Costco? American company wholesaler - dont argue and take back anything even if its 1 before the warrany runs out...

Just thinking if they apply that kind of similar service whereby the customer is paramount whereas many if not nearly all UK retailers are usually spitefull or arrogant on how they deal with you. In most cases they are like this I guess because of the amount of people trying to take advantage or 'rip off' the store through being dishonest.

Yeah, I have and Wall-mart and K-mart and Sam goody.

I totally agree with you which is why I mentioned Customer Service as being the biggest challenge.

The UK will cripple this company within a couple of months if they honour the same customer advantages they do in the states.

Over 100 stores in the US ? Hardly makes them a big hitter. Its not like Gamestop are deciding to come over. I wouldn't have thought that game would be overly concerned.

HaHa how many companys have tried and failed to take the British market. Now that GAME and GAMESTATION are a united front it will be even harder for the competition to take a foot hold in the market. For the two company's to make as much money as they did last year they must be doing something right. I love Gamestation and i think that the staff are very committed to try and give you the best knowledge possible, just think it must be a harf job knowing every little thing about every game and they do have to work too. they know enough to keep most people happy and they are very honest.

Come on now, do they seriously expect Play n Trade to affect GAME? PNT only have 100 stores compared to game's that's tiny, GAME bought double that off gamestation. Also as it's been said before, has any one else managed to enter the UK market before? I don't think so... They'll flop and I rekon GAME think so too.

GAME is rubbish. Gamestation for me has been a far better high-street games retailer. However, I have in the past bought many a game from specialist non-chain games stores as welll as online, and have gotten good deals.

It all comes down to the fact of whether you want to shop around or not. However, the introduction of a new gaming chain store to the UK could ultimately be a good thing for the consumer.

I see this as a good thing as I dont use Game at all & I will not use Game. The company in my experience treats its customers badly. I look forward to more competition for Game.I do know Gamestation exsist & they do know what they are talking about in these stores. The problem is they just dont have a store anywhere near me, loads of Game stores thou. I see it as good competition for the consumer, maybe we will end up with cheaper games & better deals as they compete for our cash.

We shouldn't forget there is already an old well established franchise based video game retailer in the UK called 'CHIPS'.

Unfortunatley the stores are sparsely spread at the moment.

Try this link if your interested in a franchise.

Many of you are talking about getting even lower prices from these big companies but with the profit margins incredibly low already this is going to cripple small companies who are trying really hard to compete

Hmmm..Well this is interesting, to say the least, but coming in with that sort of attitude is not going to get you a place in the Market. GAME and Gamestation know where they stand with the customer and the UK Market is a different kettle of fish compared to the USA. Coming in and saying your going to shove competition aside is arrogant and won't get "Play'N'Trade" anywhere. What Gamer Trades in their games anyway? >.> You don't get your moneys worth on trade-ins.
