R4 chip use is widespread in US; Nintendo monitoring the situation
90 per cent of North American DS pirates are using the R4 chip to play pirated DS games, according to ELSPA.
Speaking to The Sunday Post, John Hiller, manager of ELSPA’s Intellectual Property Crime Unit said: “The implications are massive. In America it’s thought 90 per cent of Nintendo DS users are playing pirated games because of R4s.
“Crucially, the R4 has shifted the balance of power in the piracy industry to the consumer — and that is hugely worrying. Takings from Nintendo DS games in the US are lower than any other console and no doubt it will have a similar impact [in the UK]. That’s why we intend to stop trade in these chips wherever we can.”
The R4 chip allows gamers to play homebrew titles, listen to music and view photos, but can also house pirated DS software. The R4 is also one of the most sought after items amongst Japanese consumers.
Thanks to next-gen for spotting the story.

I have never read such a stupidity. 90% of DS gamers doesn't even know what the R4 is.

Agree with Sam. Absolute c****. I'm in North America, with children and of the 30-40 kids I know with DS (plus a few adults) there isn't a single R4 amongst them. I suppose that means some people have two installed... ;-)

''In America it’s thought 90 per cent of Nintendo DS users are playing pirated games because of R4s.''
It's thought, basically meaning that hes just plucked a random number out the air and used it. Excellent stuff, really. Perhaps if they did an actual study rather than doing a quick show of hands around the office people would take them more seriously.

The source of this story is the Sunday Post, known in Scotland as a comic rather than a newspaper (Oor Wullie's probably the most factual thing in it). I wouldn't be surprised if they made up the quote.

Having seen the examples of the chav scum who try to buy a DS without a game and then want to know if we sell the R4 (We generally refuse to sell them the machine then) I'd back Nintendo and Elspa 100% in any effort to get this banned.
Anyone disagreeing with me in as knockoff nigel or a genuine homebrew fan, who unfortunately will lose out because of this - but maybe Nintendo will market a legitimate product for this, one which can't be abused.
We wouldn't want ninty to **** of the consumers SONY stylee would we.

90%?
You're havin a giraffe aint ya?
Thats b**locks if ever I've heard it, the reason the takings on DS are lower than any other console in the US is probably because its the one country on earth where people hardly ever use public transport, well apart from perhaps in NY.
I only use my DS and my PSP when I'm on the bus, the tube or on holiday.
I very rarely play them at home because I have consoles to use instead. I would put money on the fact that its a similar story in the states. For these reasons, I own much more software on my consoles than I do on my handhelds.
Anyone see my point?!
I cant see many Americans driving their cars to work and playing Twilight Princess whilst trying to balance a DS on their lap...

just got to amazon they are sold there and we are asked 3-4
times a day in store or via a phone call, no one wants
to pay for ds games if they can download them for free,
look at EMI records , ds software will suffer just a matter of time, JA

i cant comment on the US but here in the UK in our stores we get asked all the time, and have lost alot of regulars already, not just ds customers, but regualrs who decided to
get their 360 flashed, so we dont see these customers anymore. Also on the download / torrent sites you get alot of software very early as they are USA releases, so people like it even more.

What will kill the public buying games is the price - I can buy on import US DS games for £18 that are £30-35 over here - titles like Cooking Mama are $20 in the US. Guitar Hero 3, 360 region free is £25 on import, £49.95 in the shops in the UK. Just can't be justified.
I don't know anyone with a cart like this, yeah the chavs want them but they'd always want stuff for free, you've not lost anything, they wouldn't have bought anything.
Bring the prices down, bring the US games in quicker, don't just come down on the pirates and try to ban grey imports without resolving the underlying reasons why people don't buy as many games.
Cue lots of people telling me £50 for a game isn't a massive amount of money.
