EA boss blames “technical specifications” of Sony console

EA CEO John Riccitiello has admitted that the company still requires more time to develop software for PS3 than it does Xbox 360.

CVG reports that, when asked if PS3’s game development has caught up with the Xbox 360’s, Riccitiello said in a conference call:

"Not quite. There's no doubt that Electronic Arts, along with many other publishers, had some challenges essentially meeting the technical specifications effectively on the PlayStation 3.

"Games where we led development on the PS3 platform, like Burnout, which is doing very well on the market today, we had no issue at all.

Eidos

"But in circumstances where we either led with the Xbox 360 or ran parallel production, for the most part, we're still experiencing some delay on the PS3. It's a little bit more of a challenging development environment for us.

"It's probably only a third of a problem for us as it was [nine months ago]. But there still remains some catching up to do on the engineering side for the PS3."

Thats because its more powerful.
It always takes longer to get a more powerful machine to produce the same quality as a less powerful one. LOL

The games come out on both machines looking identical.

“i want a GOOD game dammit!”

Ive had a PS3 40gig for 4 months now i think, and still not a single game on the PS3 worth my money. Not one. GTAIV looks great but is coming out on the 360 aswell so my mates will get that so i dont have to. Anything that is good is out on the 360 or Wii aswell (and i've found it to be cheaper getting the same game on the Wii, for example guitar hero 3)
I think the time has come for me to give up on Sony. I gave you my money, i bought into the whole super computer/bluray/HDTV thang, and I am honestly hugely dissapointed. Sad times i say.

It does take longer to on the PS3 than the 360. It also takes longer to work on the Wii than the 360. However, no-one has come close to the full potential of the PS3 yet. The whole method of coding is being changed and multi-threading is the way of the future. What this also means is that 360 games will also get better with this method of coding but in the long run the PS3 should pull away.

And before anyway starts on about GPU / CPU comparisons, don't unless you know what you're talking about. Both the 360 and PS3 have many differences compared to previous consoles and each other. In order to get the best out of the CPU and GPU you need a balance between the two.

There are actually some limitations to the 360 which are becoming more an more apparent as we move into multi core programming. I think we're getting close to the 360's limit already, the PS3 looks like it has barely begun. It was the same with the PS2, just compare early games to those in the last couple of years.

Just so people don't start laying into the PS3 wrongly, the PS3 architecture is designed to handle media rich applications and not things like Word or Excel which the 360 could probably handle quite well. The local memory on each SPE on the CELL should have a big performance advantage with gaming - provided it's used properly. As compliers get smarter and take some of the work of the PS3 developers' backs, PS3 games will take less time to make and will perform better.

What this boils down to is what many people have been saying all along including Riccitiello, dev times in the beginning are shorter for the 360 than PS3.

There are a lot of shoulds in there.
But to me, just a gamer, I can't understand why games the are out on both machines look so alike. People say PS3 is more powerful. So why cant it easily replicate games done on 360 when the 360 can easily replicate games done on PS3? Why does it take much longer to just achieve the same level?
Why can't it do backwards emulation to PS2 ? Why cant it upscale 720 films?
It just seems a case of 'emperors new clothes ' here. People say its so powerful, but in reality the only differences that show up are the fact they both look and play so similarly.

@4 - I doubt the 360 could emulate all the 360 games. I can't imagine Uncharted or Heavenly Sword working without major work, nor could I see the yet to be released GT, MGS4, Resistance 2.

The reason some games can be done though is because the programming used to create these games is the more traditional way of programming which the 360 can handle well. The PS3 needs a completely different approach and so far, not all games are taking this approach. They are coming though, but you have to remember development takes years, and the PS3 is relatively new. The 360 may be new but the techniques used to get the best out of it aren't dissimilar to what we're used to.

However, future consoles will use techniques similar to the PS3 and so you'll find that more initial development will occur on the PS3 first and you'll start seeing more titles that won't be possible on the 360. Don't forget too the PS3 has 10 times more storage capacity too which will allow for larger, more detailed landscapes and higher quality gfx.

Yeah, well you also have the best Blu-Ray player money can buy, so maybe you should use that with your expensive HDTV and consider the fact it plays games to be a bonus.

The split memory architecture of the PS3 makes it inferior to the 360. Anyone who says differently is just blindly buying into Sony's hype.

As much as everyone says "zomg the ps3 is more powerful!"...it may well be, but it's such a pain in the *** to program for that very, VERY few titles will come close to tapping its power. If noone can figure out HOW to program tightly for it, what's the point?

so be proud of your underutilized machine. Personally, I'm quite happy with my 360 and its wide range of games. I have a PS3, but its only there for the exclusives like Uncharted (which, yes, is awesome). The PS3 isn't a bad idea, and since Blu-ray has basically won, it's the smartest buy for high-def movies...but the whole system is too damn complicated for its own good.

If you look at it this way....why would EA want to take 4 years to program a game on the PS3 when they can do it in 2 on the 360? It's all about the money.....that is why there are so few exlusives on the PS3.....Companies would rather make a game for the 360 and get it on the market and start making a proffit first and then try and port it over to the PS3. That is why it will never pull ahead of the 360 and always be a step behind. I think the PS3 is just a few years ahead of its time is all......by the time...ah...time...catches up with it the wii extreme 2000 will be out...

The 360 & the PS3 are both multi-threaded. So, this is not the real problem. The anwser is TOOLS... Microsoft has the best tools to develop for. Sony unfortunately does have the best package as far as dev kit is concern. So, it take longer to develop for because the tools are bad. The technology is not the real issue. As far as complexity, both machines are identical: multi-threaded and PC like 3D cards.
Anyway, all the games looks identical. As the dev, I can't wait for the common machine. Forget the hardware and just work on the software. This is for sooner that some people thinks.

Just keep an watch on some of Linux user groups. They can not use the GPU and not all of SPU's but there are getting there heads around how to optimize code with the CELL.

Hint...Hint...Hint...
