EA: Skate outsold Tony Hawk’s two-to-one

Publisher claims extreme sports debutant out-flipped established rival

Another interesting snippet in EA’s recently released and much-discussed financial statement was the claim that new extreme-sports outing Skate outsold Activision’s Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground.

CFO Warren Jensen boasted: "Despite the fact we launched on three fewer platforms, Skate outsold Tony Hawk 2 to 1."

Tony Hawk’s is one of the longest-running and most successful franchises in gaming history, having kicked off in 1999. The most recent release, Tony Hawk’s Proving Grounds, was the ninth in the series – not including spin-offs such as Tony Hawk’s Downhill Jam.

Skate, however, first appeared last year, but was instantly acclaimed for its inventive twin-stick control method that did away with the fiddly button combos that have become a hallmark of the Hawk’s series.

Kudos to EA for this one - usurping Hawk's from the top was a task I don't think anyone thought EA would succeed in. I'll be interested to see what Activision does with it next year to fight back.... and let's hope it stretches beyond adding the word 'street' to the title.

It's a tough one for Neversoft - to mirror the changes seen in Skate would be akin to admitting defeat. But just ploughing on as normal won't see them recoup the lost ground. It's a tough one.

Tony Hawk fell apart because neversofts president is filled with hubris, arrogance, and stupidity. You think they could do great work with the billions that title raked in. I am going to root for EA on this one. ATVI should ****can Jewett.
