Slimline 160GB PS3 on the cards?

Gadget site T3 claims that Sony is preparing to unveil redesigned PS3 with high-capacity hard disc
It’s easy to lose track of what new PS3 SKU to expect next, what with all the recent talk of 80GB cancellations and 120GB rumours – but now tech site T3 is claiming to have the scoop on a brand new slimline PS3.
Claiming to have word from a ‘particularly well-informed insider’, it claims the new machine (T3’s interpretation is pictured) is substantially smaller and packs a massive 160BG hard drive – nearly three times the size of the launch 60GB machine and four times the size of the current 40GB console.
A SCEE spokesperson told MCV that the rumour was simply "rumour and speculation".
Admittedly, Sony has always redesigned and slimmed down its machines after a time on the market – with the launch of the PSP Slim & Lite being the most recent.
But is such a move likely this early in the PS3’s life-cycle? Time will tell.

Isn't this only going to confuse consumers?

I think the reporter is right here - I just can't see Sony doing this so early in the PS3's life cycle. In time, inevitable, but now - NOPE.

maybe fall of 2009 or when 45nm are achieved, they just get 65nm so its too early

But isn't this going to be much more expensive than the current 60gb model, who's gonna pay that much

Can it play PS3 games, or are they phasing those out now?

i really want to but a ps3 already, deciding between 40 and 80 is hard enough, but all these rumors and speculations about price drops and new sku are making things harder

@scott:
There's always gonna be rumors of new SKU's... just buy the thing if you feel you want one. If you buy any new technology, you know it's gonna be cheaper next 1-6 months anyway, just bite the bullet.
@3, thank you for that. Coffee isn't supposed to come outwards through my nose though.

If you take that approach and keep holding out until a company has finished revising a machine you'll never end up with one - Sony is still revising the PS2 even now. Just take the plunge if you're gonna.

Anyone *****ally wants to have a bigger hard drive (e.g. for music, video and photo storage) can simply swap it out themselves so I doubt there's much of a market for this right now. Maybe some people who have lots of spare cash but are technophobes will go for it?
(I've put a 250gb drive into mine which was very simple to do)

I'd buy one, but only when Blu-Ray is the sole leader, and PS3 gets more than 3 exclusive game that I am interested in.
Sony, I want to buy your console, but stop confusing people. I am a techie, and I start to get confused by your different SKU's.

@12: you can actually put a hard disk on a normal PS3?
is this a mod, or does it plug in normally?

For god sake, I just got my 60gig for xmas, just before they were discontinued, I wish sony would hurry the hell up and stop messing about with new ideas.

@14
Yep - straight swap. I believe there are instructions in the manual.

I just hope they do a PS3 Ultraslime line with built in Xbox 360 and Wii add on...

The straight swap is for a laptop drive by the way, not a regular HDD. They're not that expensive, but the max capacity is a little lower.
It's a supported upgrade, you're allowed to do it, and I don't think it even voids your warranty.

i just not long ago bought a ps3 it would very quick for sony 2 release a slim line version not more than a year later from the 1sts release and rumours having heard that this slim line ps3 having more features and being better than the original 1st ps3 i dont know bout others but bit of a bummer when you've spent £300+ already and a newer better version comes out jus from having owned one for a few months. Sony have always released a slimmer version in all there games consoles but as rumours 160 gig hard drive any more info on addition features?????????

ive always said that when it comes to playstations bigger is better, some games on the ps2 slim line didn't work so what's the hope for the ps3 version??? anyway why would you want something that can fit into a girl's handbag???

I dont know about the games not working but the multitab dosent work on my slim line when it does on my brothers. i havent got a PS3 yet but i will be getting the original. But if it can fit into a girls hand bag then you can get your girl freind or mum to carry it around for you.
