But Nintendo to continue its market dominance, says publisher
In a supplement issued alongside its third-quarter fiscal results, Electronic Arts has provided its predictions for console and portable hardware.
The report states that European gamers are to favour the PS3 over the Xbox 360 in 2008, although the formats will remain tied in North America.
In Europe, EA predicts Sony will sell up to six million consoles, compared to Microsoft’s 2.5 million, whereas the consoles will remain tied on 5.5 million systems in North America. Overall, EA anticipate the PS3 will sell 3.5 million more consoles than Microsoft’s system in the Western markets.
However, EA expects Wii to continue its momentum, with projected European sales of 7.5 million. The report also paints a positive picture for the DS, with sales predictions of 7.5 million, 4 million more than Sony’s PSP.
EA stress that this figures may not reflect the views of the hardware manufacturers, and that the estimates will likely change.

Not a shock
Surely you'd expect PS3 to recoup at least some of the ground it's lost to 360 this year owing to the fact it is a much younger console.
Re: Not a shock
It's been a long held belief that the PS3 will over take the 360 in terms of global market share, and 2008 is where it will begin.
I wouldn't be surprised if sometime during 2010 it is close to securing the top spot over Nintendo
Re: Not a shock
Hmmmm - I'm yet to be convinced that PS3 can better the success enjoyed by the Wii. Different market - and the Wii's target demographic is A LOT bigger.
Re: Not a shock
I predict that most younger Wii owners will eventually buy a PS3... as opposed to the dumb ones who'll buy an Xbox... and the old ones who won't buy anything else.

@Zap! typical fanboy talk, I go to what I prefer as will what everyone will do too. Its all about choice and what you prefer and as it stands the Xbox 360 is doing very well since it does have many games and accessories.
We will have to see what Sony or 3rd party developers can do for the PS3 platform this year since many are still waiting on HOME which is looking very promising.
Re: hang on a sec
Be gone, Zap!
Your type have no place here.
Re: hang on a sec
Ok,
- I was a bit harsh on 360 users.
- I'm not a Sony Fanboy. I don't own any Sony products.
- When I get a good size 1080p HDTV I'll have to make a choice. I'll cross that bridge when I get there.
- I worked with IBM for 7 years so I admit I'm a cell chip fanboy... did you hear about the new Toshiba HDTV running on the Cell Chip?
Re: hang on a sec
Well, the 360 still leads the race and Sony has plenty of work left to make the PS3 a success.
The PS3 needs MORE GOOD GAMES.

Re: hang on a sec
As a playstation fan since 1996 im sorry to say that sony have lost the plot this time around... Xbox 360 will be my first next gen console purchase due to the GTA4 exclusives. How can sony be so stupid to lose so many big money franchises?
Re: hang on a sec
You do realise that GTA4 exclusives will be a very limited amount of missions, making up an extra 5% gameplay?
It's cost XBOX more than they could possible make directly from the exclusive, however they're hoping people like you will buy the XBOX for the exclusives and then buy more games...
What about the PS3 exclusive with MGS4?
What
Re: hang on a sec
They are still exclusive and im a big fan of the GTA games. Also the other exclusives like Halo, Bioshock etc interest me more than anything on PS3.
Eventually I will buy a PS3 when Gran Turismo 5 is released. But I will be purchasing a 360 first.

Re: hang on a sec
If Lair comes out on 360 with extra DLC then I'll definately be purchasing one, until then I'm sticking with my PS3 and waiting around for Home to come out.
You can keep your stunning first person shooters and your exclusive AAA titles, I've got a copy of Warhawk with a bluetooth headset!!!
And when Gran Turismo comes out at the end of the PS3s thirty year lifecycle I'll be the one who's laughing!
Re: hang on a sec
The good thing is reythar, you don't need to wait for GT, as there will be a cut down version you can buy pretty soon! I hope they put back that feature where i c****e my old psp as a rear view mirror, i've not really used it since i got my super sweet thin one

This word filter is ******* ****. I was attempting to say the words 'can' and 'use'
Re: hang on a sec
I own all three consoles & can say that the most played console in my house is the 360. I spend so much time on this 1 console that the other 2 really dont get switched on.
The build quality of the PS3 is utter rubbish the playstation lettering falling off straight out of the box, I also really struggle to turn the machine off without the pad. The online service is to laggy for me. The blue ray technology makes this machine more than worth every penny paid for it.
The Wii is excellent the game graphics well, hmm, it really is about game play & the games I have played are all about game play. Nintendo games programers no doubt will give you F-zero ? Wave race ? Donkey kong ? the usual next gen versions of the continued series, These are what the consumer wants however.
The 360 is for me the best console. I can not speak for everyone but the amount of games that are war based is just to high thou.
It really is down to what you want & what games you can purchase for the machine all the machines are worth every penny I have paid for them. I also dont care who wins the we have the best console war, as I have been fighting these battles since my Commodore 64, the Commodore 64 was better than the spectrum thou ;).
This is just the opinion of some one who has the consoles available to comment on.
Re: hang on a sec
"If Lair comes out on 360 with extra DLC then I'll definately be purchasing one..."
Have you actually played Lair?
That aside, let's just see what happens. Seems a bit strange for EA to start getting involved in releasing sales figures for consoles. Maybe Sony will start predicting how many copies of Windows Microsoft will sell this year...
Re: hang on a sec
Well, Sony outsold Microsoft worldwide in its first year at a higher price point, which ultimately means microsofts biggest potential for grabbing market share is now gone, especially with the ps3's huge upcoming releases just around the corner.
It's yet to be seen if the Wii has any lasting power ,it still looks like a fad that is going to wear out very soon considering attach rates for games are low, and only nintendo seem to sell well with its games not third parties. Still no meaningful or worthwhile games on the platform unless your a nintendo fanboy and are waiting for Mario Kart 10000000, or zelda 10000000 and any other game they can force mario and the rest of their dull repetitive franchises into.
All this points to the PS3 slowly but surely taking over the xbox 360 by the end of this year, or midway next year, and wii within two to three years (in terms of hardware sales).
One thing i would also like to clear up is the issue of GTA 4, microsoft seemt to be making a big deal about the DLC episodes, but they fail to mention the fact that a) they will not be released at the same time as the retail game b) they will cost extra money. Which takes the away the impact and point of them considering that most people would have finished the game within a week, and seeing as you have to pay for the extra content and alot of people will not do this.
And finally Rockstar can make episodes for the PS3 at some point also if the demand is there, they will just be different from the episodes on the 360 version.
One last thing I must mention is the stupidity of consumers, specifically people who buy 360's. How can a person buy another faulty product after experiences of it dying on them not once, but multiple times, no wonder microsoft gets away with charging for anything they possibly can on the 360 when their user base is too stupid to realise they are being ripped off. Over 30 % failure rate is appauling and the fact that these manufacturing faults still have not been resolved just means the death toll for 360's will continue to rise, I just hope people have the common sense to ditch a product that is faulty and not support companies who put out such awful products, ragardless of the manufacturer, people should not put with it. Microsofts knee jerk billion dollar warranty doesn't do anything to help the situations, because if your 360 dies out of your warranty period you will just be forced to get another, which probably explains the 360's hardware sales as it's not uncommon to see people who have purchased another just to replace their dead ones.
