EA/Spielberg project revealed

EA Casual Entertainment label to release Boom Blox in collaboration with movie legend

Developed at EA LA studios, the new title will be a family-friendly title offering ‘action-packed interactive activities’, and will be released on Wii in May this year.

"I am a gamer myself, and I really wanted to create a video game that I could play with my kids," said Steven Spielberg. "Boom Blox features an enormous amount of fun challenges and cool scenarios for your kids to solve or for you to master together."

"My inspiration for this game came while I was playing the Wii for the first time," added Spielberg. "From the initial concept to what the game is today, it's always been built around the innovations the Wii brings to playing games. Boom Blox plays on the enjoyment of building and knocking down blocks, something that can appeal innately to kids and adults of all ages."

Speilberg - master film-maker, narrative genius, exceptional director. So EA get him on board to make a game. And a kid's puzzle game is the result? Lame.

I agree that doing it on Wii is not a very good idea, however, the potential that studio film directors are looking to 'produce' games and do some interactive productions, rather than just films is VERY interesting indeed.

We've seen recent collaborations happen with John Woo (Stranglehold), Dan Akroyd/Bill Murray (Ghost Busters) and now this.

So I think we need to look at the bigger picture and appreciate the fact that we are seeing a new paradigm here, whereby games production get closer/overtakes conventional film making.

Like Kingpenguin says...

A master film director is creating a puzzle game?! Okaaaay then. This better be one hell of a rip roaring rollercoaster ride of a puzzle game. Hopefully some deep characters and great plot to come in this PUZZLE game.

Good luck marketing that one...

'master film maker, narrative genius and exceptional director'

So why is he with EA?

This doesnt make sense to me at all......?!

Someone like Ubisoft maybe, I could understand, after all, they did just release Assassins Creed.

Oh, sorry, thats a new IP EA, just in case you didnt know......

Why would someone so imaginative and original work with a company that prides itself on stripping creativity from the industry?

This is EA we're talking about here, a company who's knee jerk reaction to the Activision/Blizzard merger was to consider giving the new Battlefield game away for free?!

I dunno........

@ Pantythief

That's a very naive view. EA are the largest company in the business - as a successful film maker it makes sense SS would want to work with the most successful publisher. As if he's going to make a decision based on the recent releases of relative companies!

And as if EA 'prides itself on stripping creativity from the industry'. Nonsense. The facts are that it has a business model that has always done and continues to deliver. Let's face it - EA's annual sequels would not be successful if people didn't keep buying them.

You really need to grow up - your logic is flawed. How old are you, 15? The world simply doesn't work as you say it does.
