Microsoft knocks $50 off hi-def movie add-on for its console in North America

With many predicting that the hi-def DVD war is fast approaching an end, and an end that will be marked with a Blu-Ray victory, Microsoft has slashed the price of its HD-DVD Xbox 360 drive in North America to $129.99.

This represents a discount of $50 – and means that in real money the accessory now costs just £65 across the pond. The RRP remains £114.99 in the UK, though savvy shoppers should be able to find it for under £100.

There’s no word yet on whether the UK will see a further price drop on the peripheral, though Microsoft has confirmed that gamers in Australia, Canada and New Zealand can expect similar discount to appear soon.

I toyed with the idea of getting this for a while, but as much as I never predicted a Blu-Ray/Sony win in this war, I think it's kind of inevitable now. So even if they drop it to £10, I can no longer see the point. Shame.

Also if your 360 dies, then your HD-DVD player dies, but then again I guess a PS3 has the same problem. I just really hate how this is an attachment. If it was built in then it would make more sense to future buyers.

Yeah, but the chances of your 360 dying are seemingly a lot more than your PS3 dying.

Good move on MS's part, and about time too. With Toshiba dropping their hardware prices and HD machines selling out (amazon has sold out of the 360 HD add-on) at discount a lot of dedicated machines are now in the hands of the consumer. Stands to reason films will be in demand again. Annoyingly i'll keep getting outbid again on ebay. MS has great timing here. HD has swung back from the warner fallout and this will push HD back into the prime position. Just need some fresh films now.

You can't imagine Uncharted working? why not? Its not as if the graphics are better than on 360. So is there something else? And the others you mention. Still can't see why 360 would not be able to replicate them when it has games that are already out that look better. And as usual, you also mention games that still have not been released, so you do not really know if they are better or not. But, if GT4 comes out and is not a lot better than Forza, even with over a year extra to copy the best bits, then I would really like to hear the excuses then.

To be honest I find the graphics of Xbox 360 games to be better than the PS3 games...Did a bit of nosing around as I do like reading up on how things work and what is inside the box so to speak and found some interesting information on the GPU in both machines and memory and stuff, interesting read actually.

Saying that both are a bit close on graphics but I suppose if you worked on just one machine and made an exclusive it should look good for that machine but yeah if you were to port it then it all depends on the tools and the ability of the developers *shrugs* I am no developer so dont know how its all done, I just look at the end results.

Back to the subject - this sounds like a clearance sale. MS are going to be pushing their last remaining built HD-DVDs out for as little as possible as quickly as possible to get something back on them. They won't continue making the HD-DVD drive - what will be the point as in a year it will be the next betamax. They don't care that for the consumer - they're happy to push their dead technology onto us, but they won't support it. Anyone that is fooled into thinking they will get a bargain is wrong, the only way you'll save money is not to buy this worthless piece of junk.

Hold onto your pennies and wait til MS release a Blu-Ray drive fr the 360 - or more likely a new console in a year and a half. Or just buy a PS3 instead. This is just yet another example of how MS cares squat for their customers. I read all the time the amount of complaints people have against Sony - MS are just as bad, if not worse. At least Sony provide you with something with a shelf life of more than 3 years.

So wait you are saying that because Microsoft have dropped the price its a clearance sale? So is anything that is reduced at a better price point a 'clearance sale'?

No, Chuck, he's saying that because HD-DVD is in the **** and Toshiba is desperate. That was plain for all to see before this.

Give it a month, HD will get a leg up with this move. So many sony fanboys throwing phrases around like 'fire sale' etc. Hardware is replacable, its the software that makes money, look in the right places and see the demand. With a flood of the same movies in HD on ebay, i still keep getting outbid, seems the market even for 2nd hand is healthy. I reckon on a few more weeks of sony propaganda and hype until figures show HD is back up on top and we see another studio shift. Warner have stated they are watching to see how HD deal with this. Interesting situation.

There won?t be any new movies on HD DVD soon though as all the studios that make them are stopping one by one.

I have had my 360 for over 2 years & yes it has just broken down, I have a spare thou. I just want to say, I also have owned 2 ps1s in 18 Months. I sold 1 of them in the end feed up with the machine spending its life upside down, so I could play a game, the other died just outside the warranty. The PS2 well another piece of quality kit I had 2 of these as well in the same period of time. The 360 has out done both these machines before it broke down(it may well be rare) & its being repaired for free. The playstations always seem to break down just as the warranty expired, Calender chip maybe.
