Apple ready to storm games market?

US patent filing hints at upcoming dedicated portable Apple games machine

Apple has long been linked with a possible, and indeed probable, move into the mobile games space – and news of some new games-specific trademarks filed by the firm indicate that the company may be on the brink of announcing something.

Trademork.com reports that Apple recently filed to protect its logo and trademarks in relation to “hand-held units for playing electronic games; hand-held units for playing video games; stand alone video game machines; electronic games other than those adapted for use with television receivers only; LCD game machines; electronic educational game machines; toys, namely battery-powered computer games”.

There has been talk before of an aggressive push into the game space from the firm. Indeed, its latest line of iPods all boast enhanced gaming functionality, and many publishers have confessed to having iPhone-orientated publishing plans in the works.

However, the firm has come under attack for its seemingly unfocused games strategy in recent times.

It is a competition between iPod/iPhone and nGage as to which will be the fastest growing gaming platform over the next couple of years.
As long as they don't screw up.

It is now a software standard. Not hardware. It looks like Xbox Live and it is going onto lots of phones. I wrote about it here:
