Now Marvel ends deal with Microsoft

Self-publishing rumours re-emerge as licensed MMO Marvel Universe is cancelled

Marvel Entertainment has agreed to end development of an MMO title it has been working on with Microsoft – reigniting rumours that the comic giant is making a unilateral move into video games.

The company ended a similar deal with EA last month, which encouraged industry analysts to tell MCV that they expected a dedicated move into games was coming.

However, a Marvel spokesperson told MCV: “Marvel has no plans to set up a video games publishing division.”

The termination of the MMO, Marvel Universe was confirmed by Microsoft Game Studios VP Shane Kim to MTV, reports by Next-gen.

“I’ll confirm – Marvel and we have agreed to end development on the MMO,” he said.

“It was an amicable decision…. It’s just something that we felt that, for us and for them, it would be better if we ended development. Which is disappointing, because that had a lot of promise. But sometimes you have to make these decisions.”
