Console reaches milestone as ChartTrack confirms PS3 has outsold 360 for last month
SCE UK has confirmed to MCV that PS3 has sold a million units in the UK since its launch on March 23rd.
ChartTrack has also revealed that the Sony console has been outselling 360 for the last month. “It has been outselling 360 for the last four weeks, but they were neck and neck over the Christmas period, weeks 49-52,” said ChartTrack director Dorian Bloch.
The charts authority also confirmed that PS3 hit a million UK sales faster than its predecessor PS2.
The news comes after MCV revealed that PS3 sold a million units across Europe in December alone, and is set to overtake 360’s Euro installed base by the summer. Read the recent exclusive interview with SCEE boss David Reeves here.

Well there you go!
After all that fuss, all that ****ging, all that hype and all that anti-Sony nonsense, PS3 actually beats PS2 to the 1m mark! PS2, the mighty machine whose massive triumphs have hung like a heavy ball and chain around PS3's neck. Let's hope this shuts some of the fanboys up.
So what?
Why is it that I sense great desperation and constantly Sony saying they are gonna beat so and so etc?
If Sony outsells the 360 in Europe how does it physically effect all of us? Seriously.
Does it mean the coming of the apocalypse??? Cos thats how it all sounds or something like that.
If the 360 had been struggling to increase its sales and picked up speed like the PS3 has what then?
In any case good for Sony me well I am just interested on who has games for me to buy at the end of the day thats the point in owning a games console right?
Re: So what?
It's always going to do something isn't it? Soon the ps3 will....
I still don't actually know anyone who's bought a UK one, Sony sold 5 ps2's into my office at launch - that was the point you knew it was all over no matter what anyone else did but the only guy I know with one in my circle got it in the US from his Mum to play the F1 game on. Got no other games, no films just his F1 game and linux running on it. Know loads of people with Wii's, DS's , PSP's, 360's but no one with a UK ps3....
Very strange.
Re: So what?
At Chuck Norris
Here here well said. I think its great news that Sony and MS are so close in terms of sales. It means they both now have to work very hard for the consumers £££s. Which can only be a good thing for us all.
Exactly
The good thing also to consider if BOTH or all 3 machines the 360, Wii and PS3 are doing well and all sell plenty of machines then developers will be keen on either putting exclusives on certain machines or putting out more cross platform games.
The way I see it that if the 360 had been selling poorly and the PS3 a lot I doubt we would have seen Ace Combat, Ridge Racer and maybe DMC4 on the 360 at all.
In some ways its good to see the 360 being stronger which allows more games to come to the Xbox but now the PS3 is picking up speed perhaps it too will have many of its own games also.
The Wii on the other hand has plenty of hardware yet lacks certain types of games or 1st and 3rd party games or plenty of yet the console sells like hot cakes.
Sony has all the hardware packed in the box at a newer price point but it lacks certain things that gamers are looking for.
All in all all 3 have their ups and downs but its all up to the developers to fix the software side of it since the hardware is out there.
Re: Exactly
How I see it is that the PS3 is only going to increase in numbers from now. Many PS2 owners are more likely to be tempted to "upgrade" to a PS3 next rather than a 360. There's just not been enough for them to consider upgrading yet - mainly because the PS2 is so strong and buying a PS3 is an expense that most would like to do without for as long as possible - especially as the price will come down in the future.
But these means that the PS3 numbers will increase when these people decide to upgrade (and many will) but I can't see them moving to a 360 because of a) brand loyalty and b) the cool factor (when has owning a Microsoft really ever been considered "cool"?). So I just can't see where future sales of large numbers of 360s are ever going to come from, but I can see large numbers of PS3 sales coming from an obvious place.
Re: Exactly
Sorry to rain on your parade, but most people have already upgraded from the PS2: They bought the Wii. As for PS3 being 'cool'; it has been the laughing stock of the press and public for the last 2 years. Having said that, it's good to see Sony doing as well as Microsoft in the UK. Hopefully both companies will raise their game and we can actually see some competition.
Re: Exactly
Im glad the sales of PS3 are on the rise, and that the games library seems to be ever increasing. I currently have an Xbox360 but have noticed that most of the blockbuster titles are released on both machines - but the Playstation is the better hardware plus the PS3 network is taking off a bit more now. So im upgrading this weekend, going to trade all my xbox stuff in for a PS3. Gran Theft Auto is going to play the same, but it'll look better on my new PS3 :P
Re: Exactly
And it continues. "Desperation from Sony", "PS3 has been a laughing stock". Lads - face it, this info shows that all the anti-Sony hysteria is just that - hysteria. PS3 has had a great first year. And why should that upset anyone simply because they own a 360?
Y'all pillocks.
Re: Exactly
@ Paul Heaton ermm never mind no point saying anything really since it would be me wasting my time saying anything without ending up as a fanboy or sorts.
Re: Exactly
Sorry happy boy, but I can't play my PS2 games on a Wii so when the time comes I'll be upgrading to a shiny and cool PS3. Probably round about april when GTA 4 comes out. Oh and so will a dozen of my mates too. Not a Wii in sight among us. Just hope I get one of the 60gbs so I can play my PS2 games!
Re: Exactly
since when did who sells more hardware become something for the general public to give a flying *** about? Way back when I had a NES my best friend had a Master System and guess what - we played on each others consoles, got to enjoy all the games and still the world kept turning.
The majority of "hardcore" / industry gamers picked up (read blagged) a 360 in the first year of launch, Sony lost a lot of exclusive titles in that time and they haven't been great at courting the industry so there aren't those people out there saying how much they love PS3.
The real decider is going to be the death of HD-DVD - PS3 is a cheap blu-ray player and that's where the sales are going to come from cos the game experience isn't different enough from 360 or in certain cases is worse - 21 minutes to "load" Devil May Cry 4?
Re: Exactly
Less hysteria more Schadenfreude. I pity the fool that doesn't understand that.
So, how large was the amount?
Oh, do we know exactly how many it outsold the 360 by - surely if it was a major amount they'd be quoting some serious figures. Those US sales figures for last year didn't look too smart for anyone but Nintendo and maybe the 360 as the attachment rate was so good.
Personally I couldn't give a toss as I think it's a great bundle of technology but an utter loss as a games machine right now, it'll come down to the exclusives and frankly I don't see too many of those in fact Nintendo have most of the serious powerhouse exclusives.
And theres a point about the ps2 owners going to the Wii, several friends of mine and their kids have done just this, the only question is how many and will they site a 360, ps3 or nothing next to it.
Re: Exactly
The PS3 has been a laughing stock? For who? The general public, the vast majority don't care. They don't surf the net looking at console sales figures. They'll play a 360 or PS3 at someone's house and think "that's cool" or see it in a shop or in an ad. Then they'll work out whether they can afford it, that'll dictate if they get it now, at christmas etc etc. It's that complicated. Most people, the majority, don't care that Microsoft make the 360 because they don't hate Microsoft because they don't care about linux, operating systems or anti competition rulings. They care about their job, their friends, the pub and sport.
In the end, the PS3 will win when it has some decent games that people want because it'll play popstar, some guitar game at some point and it looks cooler than the 360.
Re: Exactly
@ Harduken - 21 Minutes for the PS3 to load up Devil May Cry 4??? Er, I have the game and it doesn't take no more than a minute. I run a games dept and have to load up the game on each format.
The 'My PS3 is better than your 360' is nothing short of boring now. I'm sure theres more than enough fanboy websites to suit your taste.
Re: Exactly
@ Gordy
Why would anyone on here be interested in how many of your mates are or are not going to buy a PS3 or a Wii? IT DOESN'T MATTER!!! Just enjoy what you've got and grow up a bit and stop trying to **** off everyone who's bought a different machine to you. CRETINS!
Life Cycles
Well the 360 is 3 yrs. in out the the usual 4-5 year cycle. Does this mean PS3, not even a year in will be fighting a new Microsoft console in 2 years or will we all be waiting another 4 years?
Re: Life Cycles
So the PS3's not the big failure the games press is desperate to be after all, eh? Ha. Serves you all right for being so desperate for the anti-PS3 headlines. Let's hope Sony goes on to teach Microsoft and all the 360 fanboys a lesson.
Re: Life Cycles
I'm not surprised that the PS3 has got to 1 million units in a shorter time than the PS2 took because if you remember way back when the PS2 was launched you couldn't get one for love nor money! It was a lottery if you got one on launch and the stock situation for the PS2 was basically like the Wii's has been! I'm sure that had Sony got enough units into the country during its early days then the PS3 wouldn't have got anywhere near the targets it would have had to match. Anybody known of any major stock shortages with the PS3? No, didn't think so, so why try and compare numbers?
Re: Life Cycles
@ _-MrT-_ :
Will you stop trying to suppress people's opinions, fool! ;-)
Everyone's entitled to have their say, as long as they respect each other's opinions, although the odd bit of rivalry and 'mine is better than yours' doesn't hurt and keeps the flame of competitive spirit, between fans and vendors alike, alive and kicking - and I think that's acceptable.
I'm very intrigued by all this war of words between Microsoft and Sony - the only result I'm seeing from it at the moment is it's allowing Nintendo to run away with the lead.
Developers will always write first for whatever platform is leading, but Nintendo has made it difficult for them this time around, hence they've been following Microsoft and some are saying that tide is now turning to Sony.
The reason they're not writing for Nintendo is because of it's non-conventional controller and game concept - possibly even the graphics capability - it's just too difficult to think up of new ways to make a FPS work on it and other genres. So they go for the 'safe' bets instead.
I'm a loyal Sony fan but I wouldn't say I'm a fanboy because I've boycotted the PS3 so far because I'm not convinced with Sony's strategy or treatment o*** consumers. Having an extortionate price, no backwards compatibility with PS2 and the DualShock3 not being bundled yet as default (as well as other blunders) makes me stay away from it.
For now, I'm happy enjoying finishing PS2 games and playing on my PSP Slim when out and about and that, really, seems good enough for me.
Does that put me in that category of PS2 owners who've not yet upgraded but will soon, I don't know...That's for someone else to have an opinion on.
PS3 vs XBOX 3FIXME
I am the manager of a very busy games store, in our store PS£ has been outselling 360 for about 4 months now and a good percentage of those sales are from former 360 owners who are pissed off with them constantly failing, we get around 3 times the number of 360's back faulty as we do PS3's. The facts speak for themselves.
Re: PS3 vs XBOX 3FIXME
I said exactly the same thing last month as point 22 above. At that point in time, we'd sold zero 360s in 2008. But lots of people starting claiming I was talking BS when in fact I know what's selling in our store and they don't. The PS3 has been selling far more than 360 since before Xmas. I'm glad we took the decision to promote the PS3 more in store than the 360 as it's worked. And yes PS2 owners are buying PS3s, Wii owners are buying PS3 and also 360 owners are buying PS3s. Anyone that starts criticising the games and comparing the PS3 to 360 is talking nonsense now. The multi-formats are now identical. Look at Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed and Turok.
Now before I get flamed again, I repeat both consoles are great, but why can't 360 owners just accept that Sony and the PlayStation is a bigger brand than the XBox in the UK and it was inevitable that it would do well!?
