US warranty firm claims a 16.4 per cent failure rate for Microsoft’s console; pegs PS3 at 3 per cent
A new report from US electrical warranties firm SquareTrade claims that the failure rate for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is about 16.4 per cent, 1UP reports.
The infamous ‘Red Ring of Death’ accounted for 60 per cent of the faulty machines. The stats were gathered from over 1000 warranty claims.
And SquareTrade’s CEO Steve Abernethy believes the failure rate is likely to increase in time: " Xbox 360 failure issues tend to increase with prolonged use where overheating appears the main culprit.”
There was no specific information on how many of the machines used the original 360 motherboard and how many were built using the newer 45nm Xenon chipset.
The firm also stated that it has seen a 3 per cent failure rate on PS3, and next to nothing with Nintendo’s Wii.

Little-known website 8bitjoystick.com in January posted a supposed interview with a source close to Microsoft’s manufacturing division, which claimed 360 failure rates were around 30 per cent.

Higher
16%? Bollox. i seriously reckon over 50% from what i've seen of my friends and in the shop. i no noone who hasnt had at least 1 machine go wrong
Re: Higher
It is not 50%, come on. It is prolly higher then 16% though.
Re: Higher
I reckon anyone who's not had the pleasure of a fault isn't saying so as not to tempt fate...
NO chance
thats the funniest thing ive heard all day, no chance,
i know people who have gone though 7 consoles , then got fed up and bought a ps3, for free online, free wirless connection, etc etc
id say maybe 50%
Mmm??
a bit of microsoft spin if you ask me, the console has a huge fault issue even with the elites,
and to be honest its starting to look dated,
some of the software is just horrible, Frontlines !!! err sorry
but COD 4 has set the standard high now
Re: Mmm??
I have 2 working 360's well, I have one and I gave one to my brother. One is a Day 1 premium and the other is a Day 1 Elite.
No problems with either ever. There are some of us out here :)
As for some games looking worse than others? erm thats the developers, look no further.
As for free wireless connection? *SIGH* its not free, its all priced into the machine so you are paying for it really.
BUT as you care about online gaming from your comment about free online play etc then why are you using Wireless? Wireless is worse in every way.
Hmm that should be enough troll bait for now.
Re: Mmm??
Definately trying to spin, 8 out of 13 people I know with 360's have experienced Red Ring.
Re: Mmm??
The last person I knew whose 360 has never died on them suffered the RROD just before Christmas. Swear on my life - don't now a single person who owns one and has never had a breakdown of some sort. I'm on my third machine - though no RROD so far, just freezes and crashes. Lots of em!
Re: Mmm??
Im on my 4th Xbox. So far a 75% failure rate for me.
Microsoft support - 100% failure rate!
But its a great fun machine to play so swings n roundabouts and all that :)
Re: Mmm??
ok, first off I know by submitting my email addy to this site im going to be spammed to death. But Between me and about 6 of my collegues (all systems engineers) we've had no faults. So long as the machine isnt in a tight confined space (as per the manual) it shouldnt overheat...treat it the same as you would a computer and it should be fine. we've all had ours for over a year without any issues. however my ps3 did pack upwhen the blueray drive stopped working!?!...
Re: Mmm??
Thing is, lots of us have had failures. BUT, It is still the best games machine by far. Best Games, Most Games, Best Online by Far,
and, if your machine goes wrong, free repairs.
Re: Mmm??
are u serious? ps3 is superior in every way.
360 technology is dated and failing. remind me, whats happening to hddvd?
there should b no breakdowns PERIOD.
you wouldn't accept it with a TV or a car...
"oh it drives well, so who cares if i have it in a garage 4 repairs 7 times!"
seriously, japanese have the best technology by FAR america can't compete and neither can its consoles.
get a ps3, try it, you'll see pretty fast whats the best.
and ps3 is only using 20% of its true power with its core engine still locked.
plus when MGS4, GT5, tekken 5, FFXIII, GOW3, resistance 2, LA noire etc come along...good bye xbox
Re: Mmm??
@12
My god you're an idiot. PS3 is only using 20% of its power? I take it you just made that up on the spot? And cars break down all of the time, I'd like to add.
My Console Vs Yours
My console is better than your console.
I won't accept anyone saying anything to the contrary, even if it is based firmly in reality and uses facts and figures that are beyond dispute.
I can compare your console to any number of things that by association will make it seem like you have made the worst choice ever by investing in it. My console has the best games, it plays the best video, it has the best controller - and it is made even better by the fact that I own it.
My mate had the console that you had and it blew up and killed his sister.
I also read that your console can make you infertile.
My console is better than your console by 520% based on the latest information from a forum I read yesterday.
My console FTW.
Re: My Console Vs Yours
actually its from developers...read up *****, i'm no fanboy, all it takes is half a brain to know ps3 owns ****box in ALL areas...
i advise you shut your geek mouth, get a ps3 and acknowledge me as your best friend for helping u make the best decision of your geeky virgin life...
Re: My Console Vs Yours
My god, you're a dreadful person. I wonder - do you realise what a **** you are or do you honestly believe your drivel?
Re: My Console Vs Yours
answer me this fido...
who will win the console war?
i know the right answer, do you?
Re: My Console Vs Yours
Baffling.
