Sony details PS3’s PlayTV

BBC takes a look at the upcoming PVR accessory for Sony’s home console

Though its launch date has not yet been pinned down, the BBC has gotten an early look at Sony’s PlayTV, an accessory that promises to turn the PS3 into a fully-fledged digital TV recorder.

The device, which is due to hit the market this year, connects to the PS3’s USB port and has an aerial port at the rear. Once up and running it boasts an electronic programme guide and what the BBC describes as a well-designed menu system.

Users can record, pause and rewind live TV, and PlayTV’s dual tuner means you’re able to watch one channel whilst recording another.

Currently PlayTV doesn’t allow PS3 owners to record TV whilst playing games, but Sony says that it is working on this functionality and that there’s a strong chance it will be added post-launch via a software update.

Also interesting is the ability to watch live TV remotely via PSP. Sony’s Remote Play technology already allows PSP owners to connect to their PS3 remotely via wi-fi and watch content stored on the PS3’s hard drive, or even play downloaded PSOne and some PS3 games. PlayTV will prove a significant extension of this technology.

Microsoft is planning similar PVR functionality for Xbox 360 thanks to its deal with BT to incorporate its BT Vision technology into its console. No date has been put on its launch as of yet.

Hurry up and date this Sony! I still haven't bought a Freeview box or PVR because I'm waiting for this! My Sky Freesat doesn't get E4 so I'm missing out on Scrubs.

I actually like the idea it being an accessory like this so everyone can choose to have such a great function.

With Microsoft you have to sign up to BT to get this feature and we all know BT are useless for Internet they are a rip off as their speeds are not the best nor is their service.

I hope other ISP's can offer such a feature where their speeds are much great like Be24 and their 24mb speeds.

Sony is on the right track with such services and options but the main problem is they boast all this yet deliver none and when they do its JAPAN only for like a year then USA then Europe when they get round to us.

We are still waiting for the Dual Shock 3 for crying out loud.

yep, get the facts right guys. The XBOX / BT deal is NOT turning the 360 into a PVR, far from it in fact!

Its video on demand only and you must be signed up as a BT customer. You cant get ANY of the features playtv offers with the xbox/bt deal.

Didnt Stringer already say that VOD was coming to PS at some point?

XBox Live & BT Vision

As one of the team who worked on the service I thought it appropriate to pass on some information.

The BT Vision service via your 360 will NOT incorporate a PVR function due to shortcomings/lack of a hdd on the 360.

The service will expand the Live video feature of being able to pay for downloadable content.

It will also NOT have any of the subscription services such as Setanta Sports which are included in the fully fledged service.

Dan Marks hasn't once mentioned that any of this is included, Microsoft are well aware of what service they will be supplying but are still not making people aware of that.

Thing only thing I want confirmed is that this thing will be HD, so i dont have to get SkyHD. Surely it must be the Ps3 is the most advanced powerful hi -definition console available so if PlatTV aint PlayTVHD im not buying.

Yes, this is HD, it even upscales SD and 720p/1080i transmissions to 1080p.

@5

Thanks for that - very interesting.

@4

Yes, we do understand that Microsoft and BT's pffer is not actually PVR, but as we said in the feature, it is similar in that it is television content through the console.

@6

Freeview is not broadcast in HD, so no, it will not be an HD service as such. However, as comment number 7 points out the PS3 does incorporate an excellent upscaler so the picture will be HD of sorts.

You’re welcome “Ben_MCV”.

Just out of interest, the BT Vision box is HD compatible and includes a HDMI output. At the moment there are no definite plans as to when HD downloads/freeview will be available but I believe the BBC is hoping to test it this year sometime.

Also as a side note I'd like to point out a quote from Dan Marks last month.
"Our aim is to provide BT Vision on multiple platforms–giving customers greater convenience, control and flexibility over what they watch, when they watch and how they watch TV".

Note that he is very clear about the multiple platforms strategy. Although there have been no announcements concerning anything else, other platforms outside of Live are being cultivated at the moment and there may be other hardware which is perhaps more suitable for the service so could possibly include the full package.

Actually, to correct two of the above, Play TV will allow for the viewing of HD broadcasts as and when they become available via freeview. Obviously they don't yet exist but when they do, and surely it's only a matter of time (I think Sky have HD exclusivitiy until 2009?) before there are several HD freeview channels.
