XNA community gaming arrives on Xbox Live

GDC08: Microsoft announces new indie games service for Xbox Live - and seven debut offerings are available now

During its GDC 2008 opening keynote, Microsoft has unveiled its answer to the often-speculated idea of 'a gaming YouTube', with a service called Xbox Live Community Games – and Microsoft has got the ball rolling by adding a number of new games to the service made by amateur developers from around the world.

Seven games created using XNA Game Studio 2.0 are available immediately for Xbox 360 owners to download from Xbox Live Marketplace.

At one stroke Microsoft have removed all the barriers to game development and more importantly to game publishing. We will have a flowering of innovation and creativity beyond anything the game industry has ever seen before. Probably beyond what any creative industry has ever seen before. The last explosion in gaming creativity was the bedroom Sinclair Spectrum coders in the 1980s (we have been going downhill creatively ever since), this will be thousands of times bigger. The possibilities are infinite.

To play devil's advocate, isn't it also equally likely that this will open the floodgates to tonnes of **** being released onto the console?
