Xbox 360 sells 18m worldwide

Keynote speaker at GDC also implies that Blu-Ray drive is unlikely

Microsoft’s GDC keynote speaker, John Schappert, has claimed that the 360 has sold more than 18 million units worldwide.

Speaking in an interview with Eurogamer, Microsoft’s corporate vice president of Live, Software and Services said:

"I think that we've sold 18 million, the last time I've checked. 18 million hardware units worldwide."

Schappert also implied that it is unlikely a Blu-Ray drive will be released any time soon.

"We have no plans to announce or anything like that right now. But I'd also urge you to look at the attach rate for the HD-DVD drive," he said. "It was a three per cent attach rate...you also have to take into account how did the other accessory do when you look at the future."

Furthermore, Schappert said that Microsoft would fund more Xbox Live Arcade games itself.

Well I want a HD drive

On one hand Microsoft says it likes to offer a choice well how does that work?

Since blu-ray has won the format war I want a blu-ray drive now its the cheapest option for me to purchase an add-on rather than a player or a PS3.

I want the add-on for 2 reasons:

1) I will always be connected to Xbox Live whils****ching a blu-ray movie

2) The online download service is not that great, only some movies are in HD, only some movies offer 5.1 and you dont get any additional features or content hence the small download in comparison to an actual disc.

I can't believe a Blu-Ray add on won't be released eventually. I give it 9 months...

I can't see any reason to presume it will happen, The HD-DVD add-on was as much about a supportive strategy for Toshiba as it was about offering the functionality to 360 gamers. And unkess MS can offer a 360 and BR add-on for less than a PS3 there will be little point...

Give us a Blu-Ray drive Microsoft! Or people will be buying PS3 because they cannot get this format on the 360...

Strange that MCV hasn't picked up on this bit of recent news (which is bound to start yet another flame war) but the PS3 actually outsold the 360 in the USA in January (or did I miss it.)

The 360 shortage in the US might be a factor in that.
