Unanimous studio backing for Blu-Ray

Paramount and Universal join Sony Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney and Warner in backing Sony’s platform

With HD-DVD now officially dead and buried, the final former backer’s of Toshiba’s disc technology have now officially pitched their flags in the Blu-Ray camp.

Reuters
reports that Paramount, the last outfit to confirm its intentions, quietly issued a statement earlier this week claiming: "We are pleased that the industry is moving to a single high-definition format, as we believe it is in the best interest of the consumer.

"As we look to begin releasing our titles on Blu-Ray, we will monitor consumer adoption and determine our release plans accordingly."

Universal Pictures, another formal backer of HD-DVD, was the first to follow Warner’s lead in moving exclusively to Blu-Ray only hours after Toshiba’s announcement.

The two studios join existing format supporters such as Sony Pictures, 20th Century Fox (including MGM), Walt Disney and Warner.

Blu-ray is a technology that was made and partnered with other companies it is not Sony's own single format like UMD and Magic Gate Memory sticks or MiniDisc.

God - it's so tiring hearing people going on about this. Yes, other companies are involved in BR, but Sony is the main player and the main beneficiary. To call it Sony's format is not unacceptable. Unless you're a fussy goit with nothing better to do...

If it wasn't...

It may not be their's alone but they alone stand to benefit from it the most, in all aspects of their business empire; film studio, music/visuals, mobile phone, games console, stand-alone players etc.

And since they stubbornly kept the PS3 price so high initially, because it had a BD player as standard, even to the disadvantage of making their console third in sales, I'd say there's nothing wrong with calling it Sony's format.

If calling it so was to the detriment of others, or that the masses are screaming it's not a fair label, then I'd say fair enough, but since no one is contesting it, might as well call it Sony's. It doesn't mean the deeds and papers change hands, now , does it? It's just short hand for something...
