Free video chat, voice chat and instant messaging between PSP owners is nearly here

Sony has confirmed that its free internet telephony package Go!Messenger will be launched in Europe this Friday, February 29th.

The software, which is already included on any PSP updated with the latest Sony firmware, allows PSP owners to chat for free via any BT Wireless hotspot or through their own wireless internet connections.

Used in conjunction with Sony’s Go!Cam, which retails for £34.99, Go!Messenger allows for video chat, and also allows users to send video messages that can be received by friends the next time they get online.

“With Go!Messenger, the PSP is pushing new boundaries, adding unique communication features to all the existing multimedia experiences,” Sony’s PSP European marketing manager Stephane Hareau stated.

Pinnacle - Football Director

“Enabling more than 8.5 Million PSP users across the SCEE region to communicate with each other, through video or voice chat, truly confirms the always evolving nature and potential of PSP."

Sony has previously announced a deal that will bring Skype functionality to the Slim & Lite version of the PSP. This will offer free telephone calls to regular phone users, but no video chat.

“This will be interesting.”

I think that this will be a nice addition for PSP owners, however, I would really like the ability to plug a USB keyboard into the top of the PSP (via an adaptor or such) and type with that...

“Is wireless free?”

Is "BT Wireless" free? Where?!

What does "their own wireless internet connections" mean?

Who's? Sony's? Again, where?!

Pushing new boundaries? Instant messaging? Shame on the marketing department, forcing poor Poor Stephane Hareau to make such a claim, is she to be the new Phil Harrison?

“Apologies in advance…”

I'm really not looking to start another argument where people throw abuse at me… but is a device like the PSP really the best platform to try and convert into a communications tool?

1. It's bigger than your average mobile phone, by a significant margin.
2. It isn't suited to typing in messages as text.
3. The battery life isn't exactly out of this world.
4. It might just be me, but if I'm sat in the sort of location that offers public wi-fi, such as a coffee shop, I might feel slightly awkward chatting away into my PSP. Just me? Probably.

The indication in the article is that Sony have signed a deal with BT so that PSP owners can access any BT hotspot (http://www.btopenzone.com/ - even has a post code searcher).

"...allows PSP owners to chat for free [...] through their own wireless internet connections."

This means the wireless connections belonging to the PSP owners.
