GTA IV pre-orders go live at PC World

Gamers can order online now for delivery on the April 29th

Consumers can now pre-order Grand Theft Auto IV online for £37.99 on both PS3 and 360 from PC World.

Customers can also reserve their copy in store for £5, with midnight openings planned for the game’s release.

"The team here at PC World are hugely excited about the forthcoming release,” said René Wright, senior category manager - console and games at DSGi. “And I for one will be in a PC World store at 12 midnight on the day of the launch – I just can't wait to play it and unleash some havoc."

Ok.... so the news here is that PC world is the last company in the UK to start offering GTA IV up for pre-order, right? Is this some kind of paid for advert?

I know you guys need ads to cover the cost of the site, but using the news posts like this in such a deceptive way is really quite despicable and is not something I would expect from "the No 1 publication for the games industry".

Is this DSGs way of reminding us they do actually stock games these days?

PC World do not advertise in MCV. It's a magazine for retailers and publishers. Why would retailers advertise?

I can assure you that in no way is this story linked to any sort of advertising or financial incentive.

Although I am not the author of this story, I should imagine it was judged as news worthy for three reasons:
1. GTAIV - for obvious reasons
2. DSGi - a company that has had a mixed time financially in recent years, and people in our market are therefore interested
3. It signifies the fact that PC World is pushing even more aggressively into the console software market

@ no 6.

Although I'm pretty sure DSGi don't advertise here, I can assure you that all media and publications kiss advertiser's behind.

It's their job. You're not going to annoy people that pay your wages now are you!

@ 6: You do realise this is a website that is aimed at everyone else in the games industry EXCEPT gamers... i.e. retailers, publishers, distributors etc.

Therefore, news of what a retailer is doing relevant to other retailers, publishers and distributors etc. Otherwise how would they know DSGi is doing this?

You seem to have misunderstood exactly MCV is?

LOL how is that news ?
Where is the story that Gamestation GAME Play.com and every other games retailer has been taking pre-orders for gta 4 for a long time now.
If there was a story it would be PC world is last to start taking pre-orders for it probably as they would be the last place most of us would buy it ..

I really dont understand why this is noteworthy

Maybe Game and GameStation didn't do any form of press release.

I think it's good to see one store confirm at 12 o'clock opening.

ROFL. What a bold and aggressive step from PC World that is - stocking the most eagerly anticipated release of the year. They are really taking a risk by stocking that one!

@12

PC World is a chain that stocks product from a huge variety of sectors, from PCs to TVs and consumer electronics, and from furniture to MP3s. The fact that it is choosing to run midnight openings for a game launch is significant news in the wider retail sector, I would argue.

MCV-the tabloid paper of the video games industry.

You guys should do a feature on Jade Goodies top 10 publishers.

LOL.

@ 14

Thats just an utterly pointless comment. As per this and a number of other threads. This is a TRADE website. I questioned the story as well but not from the point of whether or not MCV should be covering or not - for the record, they should.

How long before the option to comment on these stories is removed?

So let me get this straight. PC World and the Currys group won't stock Rockstars Bully because they deemed it unsuitable but they have no problem stocking GTA?

What are PC world telling us, that they're fine with gunning down innocents in drive by shootings but condem a game with the word Bully in the title?

Talk about double standards.

Currys and PC World, both owned by DSG International, said that they do not wish to sell the game in the UK because it is "not appropriate for Currys' family-friendly image

And GTA is? Who employs these muppets.

Good spot 'somebloke'!

I guess there was some moral highground to be taken on Bully. I thought it was a good game but I guess they perceived its commerical potential to be fair to middling at best.

However from a business perspective, no retailer can afford to be without GTA. No amount of positive spin that a retailer would get out of a stance against the new GTA would counteract the lost trade. The sheer volume of units sold is going to have a big impact on the market and a retailer not stocking it would see their overall console market share hit significantly. No retailer is going to do that. The approval of Daily Mail readers and a couple of extra DS and Brain Training bundles sold won't make that up!

I look forward to picking my copy of GTA4 from Toys R Us ;)

Isn't it a shame that Rockstar couldn't say '********, you won't be stocking our games' to PC World/Currys Digital over their holier than thou stance on 'Canis Canem Edit'...

Rockstar probably could've done. However I don't think Take 2 would want to risk not getting their catalogue ranged!
