iSuppli: PS3 price cut expected this year

Analyst says 2008 is the year of PS3, and that Wii owners will defect once price is lowered

Analyst firm iSuppli has stated that the balance of the next-gen console battle has tipped in Sony’s favour, and that the firm is likely to cut the cost of its PS3 this year to make the most of the console’s increasing momentum.

"2008 will be a turning year for the PS3," iSuppli analyst Pamela Tufegdzic told Reuters. "Sony is offering a better forthcoming software pipeline with blockbuster titles like Gran Turismo 5 which will boost PS3 sales this year.

"We anticipate Sony will have another price slash on the PS3 this year, and come Christmas, consumers who originally bought the Wii will likely purchase the PS3. The battle over consoles ultimately boils down to price.”

Tufegdzic added that Sony’s gamble in including a Blu-Ray drive in its console will ultimately pay off, as the machine will also be a hit with technophiles:

"People may buy the PS3 not only for their gaming needs, but for video as well, which gives the PS3 a unique competitive edge over the Wii and Xbox 360 well into the longer term.”

I'm not convinced that people are buying the Wii over the PS3 purely because it's cheaper. The Wii has a whole different appeal to PS3, aimed at an entirely different market. Sometimes these analysts really make me scratch my head...

ultimately boils down to price?

I would also have to disagree with this statement.

Nintendo have not become the market leader by having the cheapest system. They have moved gaming away from hard core gamers to a mass market casual audience - that is why the games market is now hot on the heels of DVD revenues.

A PS3 at £199 would eclipse even the mighty Wii.

I cant see Sony issuing a price cut on the PS3 this year, well at least not unless people suddenly just stop buying it.

Its taken PS3 ages to get into this postition and all Sony have done is trash talk about how many units they've shifted and how well they're doing.

For me, the bottom line is, if they can sell the machine at the current price, then it will stay at that price until they have no choice but to cut it.

Sony may be ignorant but they're not stupid.

I fail to see how it will eclipse the Wii since we are in many ways talking about two different audiences. No matter what prices the consoles will sell at (and should we not also expect a Wii price cut?) then Wii has some unique games that simply do not exist yet on ps3.

Analysts really are out of touch.

Wii appeals to a new and lapsed gamer market. PS3 appeals to the currently existing gamer market. Wii owners who fit into the currently existing gamer market as well may get a PS3 for the Blu Ray player or the one exclusive game they want, which will eventually hit 360 anyway (MGS4 Subsistence or whatever they end up calling it). There's no doubt PS3 will have a better year because of a price cut, but they really need to get their act together with rumble, no rumble and some more must-haves for the machine. The lack of GTA4 expansion gameplay isn't going to do them any favours.

Idiots.

Yes, having a few more hours game play (even though nobody knows what the DLC will be for the 360 version will be) on GTA4 is REALLY damaging... But I do agree with you that there casual gamers will opt for the Wii rather than the hardcore gamers who'll go for PS3/360.

No I don't agree. There is only a finite number of gamers who will go for the PS3 regardless of price to the type of consumer who will invest in a range of games from 1st and 3rd party.

Wii on the other hand will keep selling all the time Wii sports is included in the box, to countless more casual consumers who will sit on their hands until Wii Sports 2 comes out..

I will be buying a PS3 this year. Not because of the price though, but because Little Big Planet will be released. In a similar way to my buying the Wii and 360 on their respective release dates is because of one factor alone: the games.
