Sony product boss questions Wii’s longevity

‘Jury is out’ on console’s future says veteran exec Steinberg

VP of product marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America Scott Steinberg has called Wii’s long-term future into question – adding that PS3’s games will begin to “distance themselves from other next-gen games”.

Speaking to Next-Gen, Steinberg said:

“In three years certain systems will look pretty long in the tooth graphically if not look like they’re extremely dated….

“Wii is on a different trajectory completely and I’m not exactly sure what that will look like in two or three years time. The technology that’s under that hood is so different from ours and I think the jury is still out.”

When discussing PS3’s software releases over the next five years, Steinberg added:

“In the years ahead our games will begin to distance themselves from other next-gen games, our games being first-party exclusives.

"As our teams work on third generation software, you’ll see games begin to tip the scale at thirty gigs, forty gigs, fifty gigs. You can’t possibly fit that on HD-DVD unless you want to do the old floppy disk swaps of years past.”

Jury it out on Sony lithium ion batteries, too. And the jury (infromed consumers) is getting bigger everyday.

Whats with all the cheap shots? I personally dont mind disc swapping. I remember the good old final fantasy days, it felt like a real achievement moving onto the next disc. It kinda helped you know where you are and how long you've got to go.

Hark

oh and also! Mr Sony Product boss! Why the hell are blu-ray movies being released on 2 disc formats? i.e. Spiderman? Granted its special edition features, but cant all that fit on one 50gb disc?..I swear where do they find these idiots to represent respected companies like Sony, im off to go work on my CV!

It's funny that Sony and Microsoft are always taking digs at the Wii but Nintendo don't do anything the other way round, because they know the Wii is out in front. It might be true that the PS3 is superior graphically but people want more from their gaming experiences.

Maybe i did'nt read the full article or something, cos i missed the part about "batteries". I think batteries have nothing to do with this article.
As for spiderman3 the movie is on one dics, the others are just bonus, it was one of Sony pictures biggset releases on blu-ray in 2007, and IMO really showed off the quality of the ps3 blu-ray player.
You see its not just the Games & the Movie format thats gonna make the Wii look dated, But the Ps3 supports networks 10 times faster than the Xbox360, So in 5 years when digital movie downloads kick in, the 360's gonna look dated as well.

The Wii fad is over. And it is a fad. 95% of my friends who own a Wii leave it gathering dust for weeks until the next mario game is out - play it solid for a few days, then leave it.

crazyeighty8 - The 360's going to look dated in five years because it's successor will be out by then!

Anyway, many games on the Gamecube make the Wii look dated at this point. It'd be nice if the developers (even Nintendo, in many cases) kicked up their efforts.

Personally, I'm looking forward to this year being an owner of all three consoles. This might be the year in which my PS3 gets a serious workout. I know the Wii will and the 360, after the awesome year it had in 2007, is still going to have a few games that I've gotta have.

Folks will still be playing the Wii for the next few years because of SmashBros Brawl alone. But it'd be nice to see it get fully utilized from a graphical processing standpoint. Maybe Factor 5 will be able to pull it off.

Its actually been rumored that both Nintendo and Microsoft and going to introduce new consoles in 2010, both home consoles and handhelds, I'm sure you could find a few leads with google (I don't want to post links, not sure if it'll break any terms of use here)

Onehunglow, 95% of you're friends aren't representative of the people who are buying the Wii and genuinely enjoying it. It doesn't seem to appeal to the hardcore but what terrifies hardcore gamers is that there is an audience beyond their FPS haven...And how can you have 95% of one person? You need to buy a DS and play Maths training... Just joking... :-D

@ Charlie-bois:

Yes, but where is the Nintendo Revolution console (sorry, but I just can't bring myself to call it by its commercial name) going?

Although this chap from Sony may not know his stuff, the question still remains: What is Nintendo doing with this generation of console? What is its aim for it? Where does it see it going?

More importantly, where does it see itself going?

This console release has opened up a new market segment, but I feel that there's no return for Nintendo from it ever again.

If they do, they'll immediately fall back into third place again, because they'll never have the money to inject into R&D like Sony and Microsoft.

If they don't, then what's the next console going to offer the 'casual' gamer that the current doesn't? What other 'casual' ideas can they add to it? Will the 'casuals' still be there as audience for more of the same or will they be bored/moved into hard-core gaming?

I feel that Nintendo has pushed itself out of the market and cornered itself into something that they're now stuck with...A Pandora's Box, if you will.

I personaly think Nintendo has done something smart by distancing itself from the other 2 main contenders. It is making itself a niche (which it always has to be fair). Don't own one or won't but its success is self evident.
I have a PS3 because it ticks ALL the boxes. Sure there are some 360 games that won't be coming to it that I would quite like, but I don't buy every game thats relased anyway! the 360 is unreliable and not a complete home entertainment system. Nintendo at least don't compete head on in these respects.
I think you'll find social gamers (families and the like) sticking to the Wii and the balance will slowly tip in PS3 favour with regards to the xbox

I'm sure everyone here is a hardcore gamer in their own right. Or at least understands the differences each console has to offer. It was known the Wii would not be a graphics powerhouse even before we knew it was called Wii...Yet it is played by millions more than the next guy. Nintendo talks about changing the way we play, Microsoft wants to bring us an on-line revolution, and Sony wants to fit more stuff on their disks?
VP of product marketing? Guess he’s damage control while Sony gets their **** together after losing one of the founding fathers…

Sorry about this but:

@ 4
Hark is making a point about Sony boasting of the benfits of a higher storage capacity on Blue Ray but is confused as to why the movie still ships on two discs? The Spiderman film may indeed be one disc but the features are not. Why is this when Blue-ray can apparently store so much? You also have to remember that this follows a statement saying 'you cant possibly fit that on HD-DVD unless you want to do the old floppy disc swaps of years past' Yeah, well by shipping the movie on two discs, if you want to watch the special features after the movie then you have to disc swap.
Do you understand now?

@10
Zed zee, mate, I dont know if you've been living under a rock for the last two years but Nintendo have been absolutely killing it with sales and profit on absolutely everything they have their logo on. They may not have 'as much' money as Sony and Microsoft but they sure as hell can invest in R&D on a similar scale.
You also have to remember that the 'casuals' that Nintendo have tapped into have a similar buying mentality to the people that buy z-list celebrity work out DVD's at Christmas. Every year, I'll see them on the shelf in Tesco etc and ask myself, 'who the hell is buying this stuff?' I certainly wouldnt. Now, I dont know how Nintendo will continue to generate sales from the casual market but I also dont know how publishers can keep selling bucket loads of those 'work out' DVD's every year?
I dont understand any of it myself and I also cant understand how there can be about 15 different Pony games for DS? People obviously cant get enough of them and are throwing them into their baskets in ASDA along with their Jade Goody work out DVD's.

See my point?!

The Wii has no longevity

If there are a couple of things that are clear about the Wii it's:

1/ 80% of titles are naught but tired cash cows and terrible last gen hand me downs with the Wii remote tacked on.The rest being not much good outside of the Nintendo camp. And whats beyond SMMB and Mario Kart? Not much, all of Nintendo's big licenes have already hit the shelves.

2/ As a games retailer one thing is perfectly clear to me; the attach rate of games beyond the initial purchase of the console with Wii Sports is incredibly low. The fast majority of Wii adoptors only want the unit for Wii sports-FACT.

The Wii IS a fad. Already countless units are sat in homes collecting dust waiting for the arrival of Wiifit. No doubt said game, (if you can call it that), will see the console brought to life again for a short time untill everyone becomes bored, (again), and it ends up back in the cupboard unused and unwanted.

Yes its good for business now but any independent putting all their faith into this console for the next few years is backing the wrong horse. Take the money and run while it lasts, but remember its the PS3 and 360 thats going to guarantee long term profits, not Wii.

Every generation of console that is the market leader has a load of lazy ports and crap titles - Look at the PS1 and 2.

True, but unlike Nintendo Wii software sales wasn't dominated by just one or two titles. As I already said, a huge majority of Wii owners, (mainly the very market Nintendo were aiming for-ala non-gamers), are content with just Wii Sports with M&S at the Olynpics being the only other title that has intrested them. No matter which way you cut it the attach rates for games on the Wii after the initial purchase is far lower than Nintendo's nearest rivals and, in fact, its own previous games consoles, (Gamcube & N64).

Of course things may change, but looking at the pretty weak line up of core games for the Wii this year alone I don't see any longevity for the console.

When will these pathetic company execs stop these 'my willy is bigger than yours' antics.
Who cares about what SONY think about the Wii... or cheese, biscuits, or cars for that matter.
The Wii is a different machine to the 360 and PS3.
It is in a different market place.
The Wii has become the 'electronic Monopoly board game' Yes, it may spend alot of time on the shelf, but it'll come out every time the family or friends come round... for fun! ...and 99% of homes have a Monopoly board.
