Sony under pressure to slash PS3 price

Sony under pressure to slash PS3 price

Analysts claim Microsoft’s Xbox 360 RRP reduction will have Sony pondering a countermove

Following Microsoft’s official confirmation of a price drop across its entire Xbox 360 range, Strategy Analytics has stated that the move will put pressure on Sony to follow suit with its PS3.

“Sony will be nervous that the PS3's recent sales surge may fizzle out now that the premium Xbox 360 undercuts the PS3 by £40, and the cheapest Xbox model is almost half the price of a PS3,” said Strategy Analytics principal analyst David Mercer.

“Sony will be scrutinising the daily sales reports, but will probably try to hold out until later in the year before making its next price move.

“Microsoft must continue to drive cost out of console manufacturing in order to sustain these improvements in financial performance.”

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Arcade bundle, which does not include a hard drive but does come with a 256MB memory card, wireless controller and HDMI port, now retails for £159.99.

Its other SKUs, the Xbox 360 Pro and Xbox 360 Elite, now retail for £199.99 and £249.99 respectively – both well below the £299.99 RRP of Sony’s 40GB machine.

Why compare??

Personally I dont see the need for Sony to reduce the price of the console, given the fact it has a blu-ray player built in, wi-fi, bluetooth its superb value for money but what it seriously needs if Sony wants to boost sales of their console is well games.

It clearly doesn't have as many games as the Xbox 360 or an online service as amazing as Xbox Live or anywhere near the same amount of online content.

Sony competes because of its brand name - Playstation.

Microsoft has plenty of games but given the fact they have had bad history with certain hardware issues they need to get gamers back on board.

The Xbox 360 is certainly great value for money considering the amount of power in the machine and the number of great games and exclusives there really is no reason not to own one now if you dont already have one, and please no fanboish comments like 'Wont buy one cos of rrod'

Buy one now and you aint gonna get rrod - make sure it says 175w down the side of the box near the serial number to ensure you get a Falcon edition.

Same old Chuck. Always raises a smile with old, tired comments.

"Great games... Great Live... Great exclusives... Your a fanboy"

Broken record anyone?

From a neutral standpoint, it will be interesting to see what Sony do in the next month purely from a retailers point of view. Extra games, extra peripherals or money off?
It's starting to get interesting.

i'd say that the xbox brand is arguably as strong as playstation this generation.

Sony need to react with more than just skus and price adjustments, and put some better games out there!

There is absolutely no way that SONY will react and drop the price of PS3 , nobody ever drops the price in March or April.
Bad move, very bad move by MS. XB will be giving away GTA IV next and that will make Rock* happy, I'm sure !

I buy consoles for the games, not because they are cheapest. I got my PS3 for MGS4, My Wii for Smash Bro's/PBR. There isn't anything on the Xbox360 which sparks my interest at the moment, If there was, I would get one, nuff said.

So you buy consoles for 1 game?

Well the question stands pretty much....I want a PS3 just for FF13 but don't see myself running out and buying a PS3 when the game comes out I don't see the sense personally.

It is well true that it is all about the games and what you want out of a games console, the choice is there.

If there was only 1 console or 2 consoles on the market to choose from am sure most of the time gamers will buy up both anyways.

Its nice to see 3 choices on the market and its nice to say all 3 are different in their own way - nice to own all 3 I say.

As others have already said I think the PS3's price at this stage represents excellent value for money. I believe all Sony will do for the moment is release the already announced GT5P and Movie bundles just to help sweeten the deal a little. Personnally I think these bundles would have been far more attractive had they included a Dual Shock 3 controller instead of the normal SixAxis.

@ Tomo?

How is this a bad move? I can say that if this was the other way round and sony had dropped the price you'd be raving about it. For christ sake shut up... this is better for everyone! NOT BAD! If sony start doing something cheaper or doing an offer Becuase of microsofts price cut.. how is that bad? It's then good for sony owners.

Christ... Use your noddle.

I've finished wiping the tears from my eyes now. You'll buy a PS3 and a Wii already for games that aren't out yet but you won't buy a 360 because theres nothing out at that catches your eye...dear god how hard I Laughed.

no price drop

i cant see a price drop, gran turismo 5 pack due out in a few weeks, and a metal gear solid 4 pack, so i cant see it really, its still good value, especially if microsoft bring out another add on (blu ray player) which was hinted at here the other day.
I think fan boy is used way too much, and its normally from someone who prefers the opossite platform, doesnt this make you the same ?
All i see is alot of extras for xbox which all adds up and customers are not stupid, network adaptors, 120gig hard drive, play n charge, xbox live all adds up, i like both systems, but 360 looks a little dated to me now, some games really shouldnt be released. Alot of PS3 exclussives, this year and i have noticed a large shift in customers trading 360 consoles for ps3, im not a fan boy, just telling you the trends in the 2 stores i work in.

thanks for the headsup, what a bloody liberty that paddy has.
To be expected i guess from Blockbuster video.
Sorry but just because a product sells well in one area doesnt mean it does else where, 360 sales has dropped for me and PS3 has increased. I just dont think he can believe it.
I dont care what product sells the most, you order as you demand dictates. Of course we give advice and state the facts of what each console is capable of, preformance, price, asessories etc. The rest is up to the customer, you can force a sale, unless you work in PC world.

There are Plusses and Negatives with all 3 consoles. It all boils down to personal choice. The price reduction will no doubt swing some people towards the 360. Thats what its meant to do. It wont make a difference to me as I already have one. But its good that there is this kind of competition between the three, as its the consumer that benefits. All three manufacturers are being pushed to give better deals, and its us that will benefit.

not the biggest problem

the biggest error with the XB360 remains, and that one is far more severe than the RROD ever was, and it is one that can not be fixed really.

Microsofts going with an x12 DVD to compensate it's slow loading wear the reader out and even destroys discs in some cases. (and also makes all the annoying noise..)

this alone is the reason most I know ditched the Xbox to go PS3. because be it upsides or downsides, the PS3 is everything the 360 is not, and never can be.

The Xbox 360 is a great console with great games and some stunning exclusives. Dropping the price makes it a fantastic entry into next gen gamimg, but that's all it is. With the demise of HD DVD, there is limited functionality beyond game playing, whereas the PS3 has never tried to solely sell itself as a gaming console, but as an entertainment system. There is no need for Sony to drop the price because now the two systems are very different indeed.

you call yourself a gamer yet you don't appreciate that both those exclusives are amazing!
halo 3 may have had a rubbish storyline but when it came to the multiplayer it hit the nail right on the head, well untill cod4 came out.
as for gears thats just a beautiful game, and the game play was a breeze and nice change to every other shooter yeah again the story was short but it was a story you wanted to see to the end and i have done on many many occassion's.
yeah go kick and scream call me a fan boy if you must, but that i ain't i own every console out ds, psp, 360, ps3 i still play my nes and i've just got me a dreamcast.
no real gamer will pick a side and no real gamer will try call amazing games rubbish.
they are great exclusives and yeah maybe microsoft needs a bigger variety of them, but that doesn't change the fact that sony's lineup is nothing short of poor!
open your eyes
