Xbox: 'We can rule summer'

European boss Chris Lewis says he "wouldn't change places with any other platform holder" after price cut

Tomorrow’s price drop on all three Xbox 360 SKUs will give the console the boost it needs to rule the next-gen battle this summer, Microsoft has told MCV.

The platform holder has made a clear attempt to lure in famillies with the cuts, which see its Arcade model retail for £159.99 (€199.99).

“I genuinely wouldn’t change places with any other platform holder right now,” said Euro Xbox boss Chris Lewis. “We’re very confident – not only in terms of the price cut but also in terms of what content is coming this summer and later this year.

"The race is far from over. We've always had a deliberate strategy that we had to secure the core gamers first. Having done so in a way that we're proud of, we now have a real appetite to appeal to the mass market."

so he wouldn't swap places with nintendo?

MS have done a brillaint job with 360 - it's a fantastic console. but i still think there's little chance of it winning this race because it targets the smallest market - hardcore gamers.

their price strategy has worked for me...I have sold my Wii and intend to buy an Elite at the reduced price.

The Wii is a perfect family entertainment console, but the tennis elbow is crippling.

True, I think it has no chance against the Wii what so ever..

The Race between 360 and Ps3 is still on, All though i'd like to see how it ends up at the end of this year with the PS3 having it's Big Hitter MSG4 coming out. It'll be interesting where sales will be.
It's strange really that a 3 year old console is still putting up a fight with consoles that are barely over a year old but I suppose that just show how strong XBL is and how strong there xbox games line up is.

Time will tell anyway.

@3 - "It's strange really that a 3 year old console is still putting up a fight with consoles that are barely over a year..."

Errr, so you forgot about the PS2 did you? That's still going strong and only last year (7 years after release) did sales start to dip...

Xbox 360 came out Nov/Dec 2005 not even 2 and a half years old...

Xbox 360 has had more development time and a bigger userbase offline and online which includes total number of consoles sold.

Its all about the games as well and if Microsoft can keep delivering with full suport from developers then I dont see the Xbox 360 going downhill less we forget the Xbox 360 has Gears of War 2 and if what has been said is true about being much bigger and better and it all fits on 1 dvd its clearly questionable to why MGS4 requires 50gb of space...

Now now don't get arsey my friend.

There is a slight difference, the PS2 had no major competition, it had some competition, but it was lame competition if you ask me. I would of thought the PS3 would of wiped the floor with it, that's all.

I wasn't getting arsey. If I was, I'd have pointed out your spelling errors in your first post but I didn't.

Anyway the PS2 had competition in the form of the 360 for the last few years. So the 360 in your own words was "lame competition"...

The PS3 has barely broken a sweat. It sold more in its first year than the PS2 and that is without the top games which other people (not me) claim it doesn't have.

I firmly believe that the 360 will struggle soon, as soon as the top PS3 games start to come out - and that includes GTA IV even though it's not exclusive. The "hardcore gamers" as Dhalsim rightly calls them are a minority and most will already have a 360. The casual gamer who still has a PS2 and maybe even a Wii already, should they want to upgrade are more likely to go for a PS3 than a 360. PlayStation is still a far bigger brand than the Xbox especially in Europe.

I apologise for my spelling errors.

Yes you are also correct, the 360 was lame competition, Important word being WAS. Personally I think good games only started hitting the shelves for the 360 in late 2006.

I believe the PS3 will be very successful this year due to MGS4 & GT5, Sony will have a great year,

Look at the end of the day its opinion, That is my belief, like you believe the 360 will struggle and I don't. We can squabble, but at the end of the day we don't KNOW for sure what's going to happen.

@10, I think you're confusing this article for one about North America. Microsoft in North America claim shortage of supply is the reason for their sales losing out to PS3. Microsoft Europe made no such claims.

You could argue that a ramping up of supply to Europe in order to meet the increased demand following this price cut could result in North American supply being constrained...

Typical American company has turned even the european boss sounding like an ass. I really do hate the way that everything is a 'war' or 'battle' etc with these guys. You dont hear Sony or Nintendo coming out with stupid coments like this (not that I can recall, but im sure i'll be told other wise). Truth is the Wii wont come down in price and it will still 'rule' summer and xmas.

The sooner Sony can sort out their online-ablity, things will change.

Roll on summer
