Blu-Ray prices hit new high

Prices soar as the format enjoys monopoly in the high definition market

Samsung, Sony and Sharp are selling Blu-ray players for the highest prices all year, following what is generally considered the demise of rival format HD-DVD, according to a price comparison on Tom’s Hardware.

Advocate vendors of Blu-ray dropped prices of players earlier this year, in a move which put further pressure on the HD-DVD format.

Without any competition they are just competing amongst themselves...I still don't see why a blu-ray player should cost upto or over £1,000...

I say if you want a blu-ray player just go get a PS3 it loads faster and has DTS-HD audio as well and firmware is easily upgradeable.

I've still got twice as many games for my ps3 than blu-ray disks.

The blu-ray prices are certainly making the ps3 look great value more and more

No argument if you are talking about PS3 for films. But for games the fact you have to take the newer games off BluRay and install them onto the hard drive puts me completely off.
If it happens to 360, which at the moment can play all games straight off the disk, I will go back to PC only.

that's not strictly right. SOME games require a partial installation. annoying, i agree, but not a deal breaker. for me the 360 achievements still dictate that any multi-format titles are brought for microsoft's machine. HOME might change that, but we'll have to wait and see.

Oblivion : Devil May Cry 4 : Asassins Creed. All need around a 5 Gb install before you play them. Rumour is that this is the easiest way to get over the slow data transfer times for BluRay. Looking to the next few months releases, it looks as if an increasingly large number will need an install. With 5 Gb installs filling up the Hard Drive very quickly, it looks like you will soon be deciding which games to delete before you can even install home.

a lot of ill-informed people on here making false statements about PS3... article is about hardware prices not game loading times. Please check facts before posting.

Whether the article is about hardware prices or not, how does this make the statements about having to install some games to the hard drive on PS3 false?

i have the games mentioned - none take up 5gb of hd space - oblivion slowly installs background data as you play, does not need to be "installed" PC games are installed - not console games
