....Im sorry I came out with the statement 'Sony doesn't come out with stupid claims' the other day, coz this is one of the worst ive heard. I love Sony, their products are awesome, but when they come out with s*it like this it just drives me crazy! WOW is huge, I hate it, but millions of people adore it, there is no way Sony will bring out something that will rival it, no way. Im looking forward to seeing everyones else's thoughts!

Judging by their past forays with mmo's they have absolutely no chance. Who do they think they're kidding, they'd make more money signing a deal with blizzard to get wow onto the ps3...

Mind you, their outrageous claims are always good for a laugh. Is this before or after the PS3 grows limbs, does the housework and dismantles any other games consoles in the house while you're at work?

This is an unusual statement coming from a company that are still looking to get online right in the first place.
I agree with the comment above that licensing WoW on Sony would possibly be a better move, but this in itself is not a guaranteed success as the current WoW gamers would not want to move systems, plus I am not sure how desperate the average console gamer is for an MMO anyways. Also - it is a common thought that whilst WoW is great for Blizzard, it is not so good for PC gaming in general as people who play WoW invest so much time in the game that they do not spend their money on anything else (ie instead of saving PC gaming - has WoW actually served to hurt it ?)
Whilst I am sure nobody would say no to the monthly revenues generated by Blizzard from WoW subscriptions, would an MMO as successful as WoW on the PS3/360 be at a significant cost to other software sales ? Just a thought.

I believe that today any big MMO project has a good chances to rival wow. Simply because wow comunity is getting tired of Wow, but at the same time there's nothing better in simple terms of overall gameplay quality. I've tried many MMO games after I quit wow. Sony's Everquest was amongst those, but still haven't found anything that could change wow. Still as a company Sony has got a potential to develop good, balanced and interesting MMO. There's no reason to laugh at that, though there's something else Sony doesn't have. It's time necesesary to develop something big. So if they talk about MMO future in general there's some truth in their words, though if they talk about nearest future of PS3 it sounds like pure nonsence to me.

Like realtime strategy, MMOs do work well if you sit right in front of your PC! They are addicting and time consuming and they require a keyboard and a mouse!
Nobody would play that kind of timesink in their living room on a couch occupying the families living room for the next 3 years!

WOW sucks ass. I have the game, played it for 15 mins and honestly, its one of the crappiest games Ive ever played. Total war is the best pc game out there.

Ciccius, the point of having comments below such stories is to generate discussion. I also dislike the fanboys, but also dont think much of those that are quick to come out and flame one another (including against the fanboys who do believe it or not, sometimes have valid comments).
The fact is that the potential for an MMO on a console is an interesting area for debate - and questioning its feasibility is definately a valid point (for example - the recent cancellation of the Marvel MMO shows that an MMO on a console is not the guaranteed moneymake many of us believe it is - surely a superhero MMO would be hugely popular if it was done right, and yet it appears this project will never see completion).

MMO's are for PC's, if people to move to consoles do you think that you will still get free/private server..? And I dont know about you but I think I have waaayyy to keybendings to fit on a pad.

I think he is trying to convey that the ps3 and home will be a launch pad for a hole new way at looking at mmo's altogether. It offers a streamlined inter-grated approach to bring people together and encourage online gaming that will probably push the mmo industry in brand new directions.

I believe sony is right. A MMORPG on the ps 3 would rival WOW. only one i can think soe has that would do that is Everquesteverquest 2.

but it would be funny if they released Vanguard as the Killer MMORPG. who knows maybe we will see Guild Wars 2 hit the consoules.

I think if you read the statement, PS3 can one day host an MMO game to rival the popularity of WOW. I see this as a very good thing as it surely means that the PS3 will be around for some time. I would also add that the statement of can one day is just a big MAYBE. I say good luck to Sony you sure have a challenge ahead, I get the impression Sony like a challenge.

Console MMO's could work... Perhaps SOE have seen the results of releasing games too early when their not ready; as to Blizzard releasing games only when they are ready.....as for MMOs needing keyboard and mouse.. maybe, but then again, how about live chat features in the MMO and a good set of speaker headphones?

Once the PS3 establishes a user base of 30 to 40 million which will happen in the next two years... I could imagine them making a rival to WoW. He never said it would outsell WoW, just simply that it will rival the game.

For starters, i've been using PC's for 20+ years and yep had my stint on WOW. I have Xbox, Wii, Ps3 as well. I chose PS3 over XBOX360 because of Blueray.

I HATE current breed RPG's on consoles with a vengeance.

If someone released a RPG where it isn't a hack and slash for one to four people, i will buy it... however history shows that console gaming programmers can't think outside the box and read what is good about the PC releases.

Yeah you can use a keyboard/mouse on pc's however its totally possible to have a game like WOW using the PS3 controller.

IF WOW came to PS3 and was optimised for the controller, i can see myself in an instance/raid on my 47'' LCD with another 4 people. Actually.. it would roxors..

Would also love a RPG like Eye of the beholder or neverwinter as well.. Console RPG's... yawn.. where are they... I want random fat l3wt damn it.

I feel that this "WOW" idea for the Ps3 would be awesome, I would buy it on the spot and play everyday till my gf dump me ;) ... Seeing MMORPG games like WOW would be taking the full advantage of the blue-ray and start a new era for online console Gaming!!!! Now the big questions to me are
HOW, and WHEN???? Ps, Sony keep up the great work!!!

At the end of the day WoW is so popular because it is so simple yet very very deep at the same time. You can easily pick the game up and within an hour be emersed in the game an dlose track of time but there is so much that is possible and requires a lot of time to be spent in order to accomplish certain things. Most games that have tried to take some marketshare away from blizzard have failed because they have made things too complex to play without enough depth of activities. This is the first thing sony need to overcome - simple game play but lots of it.

The other problem is how to make use of the controller for an MMO. yes you could make a PS3 MMO using a keyboard and mouse but why then would you want to sit with a keyboard. The problem with using a controller is that there aren't enough buttons to have spells, abilities etc mapped to to allow quick use, and would involve menu access whihc removes the dynamic games play somewhat.

It is a tricky situation to overcome and while I would love to see an online game for the PS3 in this mold I have doubts if it is logistically possible. We will wait and see.....

I don't think Sony can make a MMO to compete with WOW, but thats PC stuff.... PS3 is the better console for realistic gaming and for those of you that are hanging on microsofts nut sack with a 360.... good luck... doesn't seem like many exclusives are coming your way. Ive had 3 xbox360's all of them I got the RROD! All of them! The system sucks and no HDMI unless you buy the elite which is more expensive than the PS3 and you still have to pay to play some 8 year old on halo3 and have a cussing match or the ever so immature "lets make fun of peoples user i.d. before the match on the head set game" LOL Get a wii if your that immature. You are able to hook a Keyboard and a mouse up to your PS3. so i assume you could play a counsel MMO just like a PC. Or maybe if they invented a different controller for MMO for counsels. after all the keyboard was meant for typing.
i don't know why you all are laughing at this idea this is a very possible. after all wows prices are outrageously high. just a cheaper or even free MMO has great potential to beat wow. plus wow is old how many more expansions can they come out with how many more characters can players make before they just become bored of wow. and what true MMO player or gamer for that mater isent going to play the new age of MMO on the Counsel?

I don't know how or why people play world of warcraft with the outrageous price the same as a monthly high speed internet bill if not more. If im buying a 60day pre paid time card i should get 60 days!! of playing. no some BS 60 day period to play. what about the gamers who have lives but enjoy a mmorpg. we cant play because its pointless to waste our money to play 5 times in 60days. Exspeccialy with the economy the way it is.

so i think it ps3 makes a mmorpg for the counsle not only will it be more success than wow if its free or dose its time cards right like i said 60 day time card should be 60 days down to the hours your play. but also it would be the first major mmorpg on the counsle everyone and there mothers would be playing that sheit.
