Prey 2 officially unveiled

360 and PC title hopes to ‘leapfrog’ Portal, according to new studio boss Scott Miller

After a web-based leak at the weekend appeared to announce the existence of Prey 2, official word has now emerged of the follow-up to 2K Games’ Xbox 360 and PC FPS.

The game is being handled by new developer Radar Group, which is being headed up by 3D Realms’ Scott Miller.

Speaking to IGN, Miller stated that the original Prey ‘pioneered’ the game mechanic behind Valve’s cult puzzle outing Portal, and that the sequel would take things a stage further:

“While Prey pioneered the portal concept, Valve’s Portal took it to an all-new level. It really shows what you can do when you focus on a single core cool gameplay concept.

“So, while Portal impressed the heck out of us, it has also inspired us to return the favour to Valve and hopefully leapfrog them as they did us. We believe we have new ideas for portals that will keep the portal race interesting.”

“We’re beefing up the combat. Expect more enemies onscreen simultaneously versus three-to-four in the original, as well as the spirit powers. And while the original was too much of a corridor shooter, Prey 2 will have much more variety and wide-open areas. Think COD4 to get a good idea of what we’re shooting for in terms of open-world look and feel.”

No release date has been announced as of yet.

Radar has also announced two further projects – FPS Earth No More and adventure title Incarnate, both of which are due out on 360, PS3 and PC.

Prey is a really under-rated game; I'd recommend anyone play it, particularly as you can pick it up new for around £10 in Game these days. Looking forward to a sequel.

Awesome, the first game was wicked sick in terms of set pieces.

The portals in Prey were nothing more than a door to a linear level - the comparison with Valve's Portal is ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, Prey was allright (especially the changing 3D environment when using the magnetic walkways), but the "portal" effect was only visually interesting - it was scripted and it did nothing except act as a door to next level.

If you want earlier comparisons of such use of Prey style portals - then Diablo is one example. In that game you could even summon a portal and travel to locations :), arguably more interesting in terms of gameplay then Prey.
