Indies aren’t dead yet, says Grainger Games

Thriving UK indie Grainger Games unveils plans to open multiple stores across the country

Indie Grainger Games has told MCV that it plans to open 50 stores nationwide – proving that despite recent struggles, the indie sector is still alive and kicking.

The retailer started up as a market stall in 1996 and has now progressed to boast 13 stores, located throughout the North East and Scotland.

“All of our stores are in prime High Street locations including Newcastle, Sunderland and South Shields,” said purchasing director Chris Harwood.

“This year we would ideally like to grow the business with the opening of another seven shops. We are looking to expand year-on-year and eventually reach a target of having 50 stores across the country.”

And the thriving indie chain added that its plans don’t just involve a High Street assault – the web is also high on its agenda.

“Our online store has really taken off this year,” adds Harwood. “It is progressing to do as much good business as our High Street stores.”

The indys play an important part in the industry so i am pleased to see one doing so well.

Supermarkets are often able to sell games cheaper than most indys can buy them so they have to be good and offer something a little more to be able to survive.

Up the Indys i say

Having been an Indie for nearly 15 years, all I can say is good luck, but I think your taking on too much with new outlets in the pipeline, the competition is only going to get tougher and the margins non exsistent.

But expansion into towns without much competition is positive. So many smaller towns have to rely on a cr**py Woolworths or a Smiths, there is room for a good indy if you choose the location carefully.

Also, more stores means more revenue, which means better allocations and pricing from the distributors.
