Despite a weekend of bad weather, 20,000 gamers flock to Wembley for debut event
Play.com Live kicked off at Wembley last weekend to snaking queues, smiling faces and some stunning new games.
Highlights included a talk from the Far Cry 2 developers, live performances from the likes of Elliot Minor and a giant, inflatable Stay Puft.
“For our first show it was an amazing success,” said head of games at Play.com Gian Luzio. “Just over 20,000 people attended, and was spread evenly over the two days.”
“We were concerned the turnout might be affected by the weather, but that wasn’t the case with gamers showing up in their droves. I was particularly delighted by the number of families that showed up, and the feedback they gave was overwhelmingly positive.”
Games on display included Haze, Rainbow Six Vegas 2, Sega Superstars Tennis, Ghostbusters, Lego: Indiana Jones, The Bourne Conspiracy, Race Driver: GRID and much more. The PES tournament also came to a dramatic conclusion, and there was a Rock Band battle live on stage.

The event was hosted by Iain Lee and Gemma Atkinson, and there were signing sessions from Doctor Who’s Tom Baker and Red Dwarf star Robert Llewellyn. However, Luzio was keen to thank the exhibitors for their support.
“The exhibitors were fantastic and did a brilliant job of making the event what it was,” he added. “In fact, the support from the entire industry was wonderful.”

woo hoo
Definitely was a success for me, £50000 winnings :-D lol
boo hoo
i don't understand why the weather would have had an effect? it was indoors and not 100m away from an underground station?
i found it a complete disappointment. i wanted to play ghostbusters, but instead i got a video. i was stuck in queues waiting for a go on lego indiana. i also found queues of people not even knowing what they were queuing for. it was the most poorly organised event i have ever been to.
Re: boo hoo
I didnt get a chance to check out much of the stuff because I was in the PES tournament all day, but from what I heard most people thought the same as you Wratty. Hopefully if they do it again next year they will take on board the complaints and make it into the event it should be
Re: boo hoo
I for one commend the gang at Play.com for putting on this event and filling a void left by previous shows that sadly no longer exist.
Like most things the first one may not be to everyones liking but over time it can only get better. I myself take my hat off to Mr Luzio and the gang and as an up and coming publisher I hope to be able to take part in the event in coming years should it continue to be an annual event.
Would be an idea to forward your comments (Good & Bad) to the guys ouutlining your experiences so that going forward these issues can be addressed and a show that everyone is happy with comes out of it all. :)
Re: boo hoo
If nothing else it was worth it for the lovely pictures of Gemma Atkinson - she can handle my Wiimote and Nunchuks anytime.
Re: boo hoo
I went Saturday morning and was as most people left feeling 'is this it'. The whole thing was small scale. It seemed crowded only because it was set in very small area. While we know we need a show Play just was not it. The industry needs a mass entertainment event not just a games arcade.
Re: boo hoo
I found it a complete dissapointment. Had to queue for half an hour and once inside it was too crowded. Didn't really get to see anything and left after an hour. I won't be going again unless a bigger venue is used. I have been to several shows before like ECTS and there was a public show about 4 years ago which was really good and spacious. At this one I just couldn't see what was on show.
It was very disappointing
I attended the play.com live event and can tell you a very different story to the one Play themselves are reporting.
In a word it was toss. They advertised things like Resident Evil 5 and Streetfighter 4. Sure they were there, in video form only, and they were the same videos that have already been shown months before.
There was very little to see or do, you were screwed if you wanted to eat and were a vegetarian, or didn't like hot dogs, as this was all they had.
Oh and to top it all off they had the worst organisation ever. We all had VIP weekend tickets for the full 2 days, yet we couldn't just walk in. We had to wait, just like everyone else, in the rain while they made everyone leave once the morning session was over. If you had attended in the morning and had a vip all day pass you still had to go out into the rain and then re-queue up to get back in.
It was crap and I will not be going to another of their events
Really enjoyed it
My wife and I really enjoyed the show. People will always complain about overcrowding, not enough pods available to play on, Game X was not there etc.
Play took a chance on this, and I think it went rather well. Here's hoping next year's will attract more publishers and their games.
Re: Really enjoyed it
I found it a real let down, overcrowding and was not able to see many of the games. People waiting for a DVD goodie bag, why could they not come out and hand bags to us while we waited outside. GIVE me ECTS anytime.

Re: Really enjoyed it
There were a few things I enjoyed, FarCry 2 demo, Soul Caliber 4, the freebies were good, though I wish they had
a cheaper place to eat, and some more demo's. Though
would go again but not for the whole weekend, and definately not VIP as there wasn't anything extra. Layout was also poor.
Success, my foot
I cannot believe I paid £16 for a VIP ticket which really didn't get me any special treatment at all. The VIP area was really pretty bad, and there were people in there that didn't have VIP tickets. I ended up leaving after 3 hours and didn't go back the following day.
The goodie bags that were meant for VIP ticket holders were given to all visitors.
The over 18s area was rubbish with old games being played.
The venue was far too small for the numbers of people there and I find it hard to believe there were 20000 people over the two days - it was a tiny venue!
Thanks to Play for trying to have a UK games event but they failed this year. If they do it again next year they need a much larger venue like Olympia, and more developers/publishers.
And Gemma Atkinson? Don't make me laugh - she couldn't string a sentence together.
£4 for a sandwich, £1 for crisps!!! And you had no choice as the security were taking peoples food and drink off them at the door.
Highlights for me though were the Bourne Conspiracy and Haze. And to see Far Cry 2. Oh and Robert Llewelyn.
So i wasnt the only one?
I'm probably going to post something on this in the next few days, as it seems overwhelming now how many people disliked the event.
Whoever said forward the ideas on, don't worry i will. Also don't get me wrong, I do commend them for trying, but i do no commend them for lying. I was expecting to play a slew of new games like Resi 5, i was really miffed to be given FOOTAGE of it. Stuff thats been around for years. I wasted money making my way to London for this event based on false promises or clever marketing. I feel decieved.
Based on attendance it was a success, they managed to lure in half the country to an overcrowded conference room. Next time they need to put it in a big field that doesn't cost them or their punters as much money.
The event's negatives outweighed the positives. Even if i did manage to get out of there with 9 copies of Knocked Up.
Re: So i wasnt the only one?
AAAAAAAAAH
Another thing, don't advertise the people who are signing things without telling you what days they are on.
I went on the sunday and was completely surprised to find no Kryten, but instead the cat and holly - which was a positive - and a completely different doctor who in Sylvester McCoy. COMPLETELY tucked away in a corner upstairs. No guides to tell you where anything was, and the staff had no clue either - they didn't even know where the canteen was.
I could do a better job organising the bloody show if I was drunk, or even asleep.
London Aquarium
Well I went to the London Aquarium on Sunday...paid £25 parking, £45 to get in after queueing for 2 hours with a load of polish in the rain and snow. And then when I got in they charged me £7 for a hotdog and a coke and to top it all off........the sharks in the fish tank were asleep!
I feel completely ripped off....last time I'm going there....you'd think they'd have got it right after being open for 50 years every day.....but nope!
So...Play Live wasn't that bad and hopefully will be better next year......
If you want to really moan...then go to London Aquarium on a Sunday!
Success?
As a smaller publisher, we were also interested in taking part, but nobody at Play seemed interested in talking to us. On the basis of the feedback above, I am glad we didn't.
Re: Success?
I feel the criticism levelled at the event is a little unfair. I paid just £6 for my ticket and for that I got an afternoons entertainment. Sure is didn't live up to my experiences of past shows but then for a show that was put on at three months notice I never expected miracles. I believe that as a test bed for Play they have proved now beyond all doubt that the UK needs a large event and the numbers will just go to show the future exhibitors that they can count on a hungry crowd and hopefully this will attract more and more people to come along to a big venue maybe not even in London but somewhere more central in England.
As a test of the waters it was a success. If I had paid £25 for a ticket I'd be livid but as I paid what I did and knowing what I know of the events planning and structure, kudos to Play for getting it set up in such a short span of time.
Re: Success?
I lost interest when they had the nerve to charge me to attend their marketing event.
Re: Success?
I actually really enjoyed it.
My VIP ticket got me into the comfy MCV room, which was wonderful.
The over 18 area DID have new games. I played Viking Battle of Asgard and Condemned 2 in there. And the bands were awesome too. I was very much entertained! Even if it was a little crowded.
Re: Success?
My boyfriend and I went to the event on the sunday morning and we were really looking forward to it however after just 10 mins we had seen most of it and we were bored. We found another area upstairs by exploring when we got bored which included the over 18's section, which consisted of old games we had already seen and nothing new.
We just found we were stood around waiting for things to happen and we soon got bored. Alot of the previews of games were just video trailers which had already been released and it was a shame to say there wasn't many demo's of the upcoming games.
It's a good try by play but we just found that there wasn't much new material that we hadn't already seen and what was there got very over crowded due to being packed into a small area for such an event. I have to say the biggest attraction for us was the xbox 360 stand with the rock band demo and the dance off's which were great fun to watch.
