Ubisoft’s gamble pays off as Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 debuts at number one
The popularity of the Tom Clancy franchise continues with its fifth number one in the ChartTrack All Formats Top 40, in the form of Rainbow Six Vegas 2.
The tactical shooter records 77 per cent of its sales on Xbox 360 (the remainder on PlayStation 3) and is the fourth fastest selling 360 game in the UK. Other number one’s in the Clancy series includes Splinter Cell, Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow, Rainbow Six Lockdown and Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2.
This means the ever-present Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games has to settle with second place, despite a 60 per cent jump in sales. The game is one of two Sega titles in the top ten, with Sega Superstars Tennis at number ten.
On the subject of ever-present titles, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare rises again from fifth to third, whereas Guitar Hero III jams up into fourth.
Finally, it’s been a better second week for Vivendi’s The Spiderwick Chronicles, with its first top 40 showing at number 24. Whereas Easter promotions for Cooking Mama and Resistance Fall of Man sees the titles return top the top 40 at number 29 and 30.
The ChartTrack All Formats Top 10:

“Whats the gamble ?”

I am probably missing something, but am not sure why you refer to this as a gamble ?
I thought it was almost a certainty that this would debut at No 1 in the sales charts.

Maybe it was a gamble because Ubisoft spent loads of money on marketing.
Maybe it was a gamble because they're releasing a game that's essentially part two of a previous game when COD4 still rules the charts.
Maybe Ubi were gambling on it hitting the top spot (which they were).

ok - I missed the point on the link between Vegas and gambling - so am happy to take the uppercut to the jaw on that one.
However, as for the game itself being a gamble it is definately not a gamble.
In response to #4 above, you make no sense:
i) it would have been a gamble NOT to spend money on marketing, as is the case with any game.
ii) in this day, it is a gamble NOT to release a sequel but instead go for original IP. I dont think releasing a sequel to a succesful franchise is a gamble at all.
iii) It is true COD4 still rules the charts, and I think the COD4 sales figures will outsell RSV2 by a significant margin at the end of the day. However, despite its solid position in the charts, COD4 has been out for a while now, and therefore the timing of the vegas release is NOT a gamble as the same people that bought COD4 are likely to buy Vegas 2. Vegas 2 was always going to outsell COD4 in its first week of release - what is more a question is whether it is outselling it over a month from now.
I therefore still dont see why it was a gamble, although I am sure Chris just used it as a pun, and I was too dumb to get the joke.

Isn't it very ironic that the publishers seem to be gaining all there software sales multiplatform from the Xbox360, i wonder if Metal Gear Solid 4 will be a 360 title when Konami realise being an exclusive to the PS3 won't pay the bills.
