BYRON REVIEW: BBFC hits back at ELSPA

We can handle extra work and our symbols are trusted and understood, says statement

Director of the BBFC David Cooke has welcomed the Byron review’s recommendations – and has emphasised that its own ratings system is the industry standard.

“The BBFC has been able to handle a major expansion of the DVD market over the last few years, and we are ready and able to take on the extra work envisaged by Dr Byron,” said Cooke.

“We attach great importance to providing a speedy and effective service, primarily to the public, but also to the creative industries who produce films, DVDs and games. We will be talking to the Government, PEGI and the games industry about how to implement Dr Byron’s recommendations.”

“I welcome the film-style classification system and greater role for the BBFC. At the BBFC we provide symbols which are trusted and understood; thorough, independent examination by skilled games players; individually tailored health warnings, and also the full reasoning for the classification covering all the key issues; a cutting edge approach to online film and games content, including independent monitoring.”

“We co-operate closely with the Pan European Games Information Systems (PEGI) and will continue to do so. Unlike PEGI, the BBFC has the power, in exceptional cases, to reject films, DVDs and games which have the potential to pose real harm risks."

we all know that ELSPA do great work but we all know they CANT handle it...they would need MILLIONS more money to hire hundreds more staff and thats just not gonna happen! Also they will need companies to tell them to rate EVERY update in games online etc. as well as map packs and all that stuff....we all know about the hot chocolate debacle etc...the only way to FULLY rate a game is to play a game right through with a 'excellent' games player who can unlock and assess everything the 'normal' games player would....unfortunatly the only way to do this would be to hire a crack team of gaming pros to rate a game, and this would delay every finished game by weeks if done correctly...never gonna happen is it!?!

I don't trust their symbols. After all, where a game and a movie have similar content (and I'm talking violence and horror here), the BBFC will put a 15 rating on one and an 18 rating on the other--I wonder if you can guess which is which?

Hmmm...not sure I trust that statement. Also, exactly what are Dr Byron's recommendations and why are they being followed? If it's got anything to do with kids and violence etc, surely everyone knows by now that nothing is conclusive on the matter?
