360 and PS3 rocket during bumper Easter

360 and PS3 rocket during bumper Easter

PS3 leading year-to-date sales battle with 360; Sony and Microsoft consoles see over 70 per cent sales boost

The race between Xbox 360 and PS3 shifted up a notch this past week as both consoles saw huge leaps in hardware sales, thanks to the Easter break.

Though PS3 is still outselling 360 regularly week-on-week and in terms of year-to-date sales, the Sony and Microsoft platforms both saw a 73 and 78 per cent rise in hardware sales respectively this week.

Nintendo’s mega-selling Wii and DS also saw significant rises, despite stock concerns.

ChartTrack data obtained by MCV suggests that the Easter break also saw a significant boost for software sales as parents and school kids rushed to the High Street to snap up the latest releases.

“Week 12 fell during Easter so we saw software and hardware up across the board,” ChartTrack director Dorian Bloch told MCV.

“PS3 and Xbox 360 are pretty much neck and neck at the moment, with PS3 slightly ahead. Software was up, and the formats that Rainbow Six Vegas 2 appeared on did especially well.”

Retailer activity, particularly from Dixons and Argos, have boosted already strong PS3 sales – and there’s more to come, said Bloch.

“The release of GT5 Prologue and its bundle will see a further rise on PS3 after its release. PS3 has been outselling Xbox 360 for some time, but last week they were pretty close. In terms of sales so far this year, PS3 is ahead.”

But it’s not over yet – a split Easter period means that the sales bonanza will continue into next week, added Bloch. “Some schools are on holiday so next week will be similar, as there are a lot of product slated for March 28th. We’ve seen bumper sales this week and we can expect the same for next week.”

WEEK-ON-WEEK HARDWARE SALES

360 - Up 78 per cent
PS3 - Up 73 per cent
Wii - Up 37 per cent
DS - Up 32 per cent
PSP - Up 10 per cent

even with a price cut it couldnt still match/outsell PS3

"Though PS3 is still outselling 360 regularly week-on-week and in terms of year-to-date sales, the Sony and Microsoft platforms both saw a 73 and 78 per cent rise in hardware sales respectively this week."

It is over for MS and x360. even with a price cut and half the ps3's price it couldnt even match PS3's sales

However no one buys x360 anymore since it is a defective console without any games for 2008 and beyond

PS3 HW will outsell x360 HW 2:1 next week thanks to GT5 PROLOGUE

Next week will be the death anniversary of XBUG in europe

Didn't realize there are so many mentally challenged fan boys. The only markets that really matter to Sony and MS are Japan and North America. Get over it

Nice thoery. Totally wrong and blatant wishful thinking but amusing none the less.

Explain to us all please how for all its sales PS3 software still lags well behind the 360 with multiplatform titles doing better on MS's console than on Sony's.

I'll tell you. It's because PS3 is the cheapest BluRay player on the market and the majority of people snapping it up are buying for movies; not for games.

Software is where it's at; and PS3 is nowhere.

Yea so the ps3 versions of DMC4 and Burnout paradise selling better then th 360 ones worldwide doesn't count i presume. And pro evo, fifa and NFS all selling better on ps3. Aswell as COD4 and Assasins creed selling better on the ps3 then 360 in europe.

Did you invent the charts by yourselves??????

That VGCRAP said that x360 outsold PS3 . However Chartrack has clearly said that PS3 still outsells x360 even during the price cut week

"Though PS3 is still outselling 360 regularly week-on-week and in terms of year-to-date sales, the Sony and Microsoft platforms both saw a 73 and 78 per cent rise in hardware sales respectively this week. "

“PS3 and Xbox 360 are pretty much neck and neck at the moment, with PS3 slightly ahead. Software was up, and the formats that Rainbow Six Vegas 2 appeared on did especially well.”

We will celebrate X360's death anniversary next week with GT5P in STYLE

DMC4 sold 2x as much on PS3 than x360. even in USA PS3 version of DMC4 sold as much as X360. Not to mention that x360 version of DMC4 never appeared on the charts of Germany/France/Spain/Italy.

Last year even with 2/3rd of x360 total base PS3 versions of NFS/FIFA/PES/DMC4 all outsold x360 versions worldwide

However all multiplat games except Army of 2 /Rb6 2 have sold more on PS3 than x360 in europe. In europe it is finished for MS and x360 . with GT5P's release it is time to put x360 to rest forever in peace in europe

Hardware sales that are up 78% hardly sounds like a machine that, reading some of these posts, is about to "rest forever in peace." Admittedly i haven't seen the exact figures myself but i trust MCV otherwise i wouldn't waste my time with it. Besides my SNES is definitely better than your Megadrive, and my C64 is better than your Spectrum, and my Atari is better than your Amiga....... and bigger.......and better looking etc. etc. Lets see a return to cohesive argument and put an end to this mines better than yours nonsense.

Seems like some Xbox 360 fans are getting a little worried that Sony's console is actually starting to shine, judging by the responses here.

People are forgetting about online services which are a major part in consoles and XBOX Live is miles ahead of PS3 Live with 10 million users. I dont tend to buy loads of games for my 360 as i play online and am still hooked on COD4. While i buy more games for my PS3 as it is not great online so i use it as a single player machine.

XBL miles ahead of PSN? OK, its currently a more complete service but lets not get carried away. The last few months have seen a major decline in the quality of XBL what with online gaming being clunky and slow and downloaded content being incomplete and taking an age to download.Hardly value for money. PSN is set to do everything XBL can and more with its contstantly improving service and of course HOME.

It's roughly 70-30 per cent in Microsoft's favour regardng game sales on multiformat releases.

Including the recent Rainbow Six.

Don't worry... I suspect people like Wasim's days are numbered on this site. This site is supposed to be for the "games industry", not for people like him who belong on www.consolefanboy.com.

The people in this industry are getting tired of seeing the likes of this diatribe plastered all over a site that should be providing useful information to those "in" the industry.

We're all getting a bit tired of the misinformed schoolies throwing incorect facts about as though they know what they are talking about. It's funny for a while but eventually, it just gets tiresome.

Hopefully, MCV will implement something to ensure it is turned into what it should be, useful site full of genuine news and facts.
