Paine: DS selling better than ever

Concerns over stock are down to continued sales success, explains platform holder

Forget the festive season – Nintendo’s DS console is selling more right now than the platform holder would expect in the run-up to Christmas, according to marketing director Dawn Paine.

A full three years after its UK launch, Nintendo has told MCV that DS sales continue to increase – and the past month alone has seen sales that one would normally expect during the pre-Christmas rush.

“We’re seeing completely different sales trends now,” said Paine. “What we sold last week on DS is what previously would have been sold in November – so hopefully retail will understand that it is presenting stock challenges for us. But they are issues we are hoping to address. But three years down the road from launch, the fact that our hardware sales are increasing is very pleasing.”

The handheld’s phenomenal sales have caused some complaints from indies over stock allocation – but Nintendo is doing its best to please everyone, added Paine.

“The independent retail community is just as important to us as any one of our other partners. Each and every retailer brings something different to the party. I think the issues we are experiencing at the moment is because of the level of sell-through we are seeing.”

Its more to do with allocations than just a stock issue
The fact that the DS is enjoying phenomenal sales is brilliant
But despite fantastic sales over that last 4 months the independant distribution channel has had sporadic minimal restocks on DS hardware
You might not be able to please everyone but at least give everyone a fair allocation

It is all down to the allocation. Indies are complaining to me that whilst they have little DS stock, the nationals are stuffed with them and they have to buy some of these so as not lose their customers. Koch is doing sterling work, but if they can't get the units in from Nintendo to distribute to the indies, they can't service the sector as preferred distributor and it applies to Advantage and Gem, who are also vital to the indies well being.

Somehow the distribution has become skewed in favour of the nationals, so can Ms Paine confirm or deny it is a deliberate Nintendo policy?

In the mean time, I am going to ask indies to send me their EpoS data on DS hardware stock and sales, so I can better understand the ratios.
