BBC iPlayer hits Wii

Nintendo signs deal with BBC to offer content through the top-selling home console

Wii users will be able to stream a plethora of BBC programmes from midnight tonight, when a message will be sent to all UK-based Wii consoles currently connected to the internet informing users of the new service.

Existing Wii owners will then be able to watch BBC iPlayer content through the console’s Internet Channel.

“This exciting alliance with the BBC is yet another way in which Nintendo is looking to broaden the market for its products by offering compelling and relevant content to families,” said general manager of Nintendo UK David Yarnton.

“BBC iPlayer on Wii will offer Wii owners another reason to turn their console on everyday and adds to the already established non gaming content on Wii that includes news and weather channels and an internet browser.”

Wii, epic move

Impressive, most impressive. For all the boasting both Microsoft and Sony have done about multimedia features, look what the Wii pulls out? Stunning, and i hope only the start of things to come...Maybe the Wii was always going to be multimedia? just that it approached it from a different viewpoint? i.e. low price point, and then build up from there. With the Wii going sales crazy, its no wonder every content provider wants to jump in.....If only it had HD graphics...but still what a machine...

Not that impressive for people who have to purchase the internet channel.

Why oh why are they crippling the machine like that?

Er, let me get this right, so the BBC charge me £148 a year so I can own a telly.
They reward me by showing re-runs of programs that are 30 years old and dont develop anything new or entertaining.
They give me Doctor Who on a saturday night and Eastenders god knows how many times a week. Both of which are complete s**te.

And now they wont me to download more of their crap via my Wii? And pay for it?

er, no thanks.......

@3: No, they charge you to watch programmes on your TV. aka No aerial allowed. I'm sure there's some way around it, but I don't care; living with parents has some benefits.

Overall, it's a ballsy, but good, move. All they need to do now, is get 4OD on side, and they'll be set.

By that rational "Pantythief" you might as well say, the BBC charge me £148 a year and I have to buy a TV to watch the stuff on too. The amount commercial channels cost you due to the leverage they place on products to offset the cost of advertising is far higher than the licence fee. The BBC is just giving you another access point and the content their showing is also new, as it is within a rights window on the service.

Good move there Nintendo.

But could we not get a "iPlayer channel" even if it just opens a web browser. It'll make it all the easier to select and use, rather than opening the web browser and having to type it in.

Guess it doesn't REALLY matter.

Apologies for the 'noob' question. Will there be a charge for using this service....or will it be free as long as you have an Internet connection?

Do you have to pay for Internet use on Wii's?

My issue is, its called a TV license. Now, if you want to drive a car, you take a test and providing you pass, you get a license.

You have a license to drive a vehicle.

If you want to own a gun and go sport shooting, you get a lisence.

You have a license to own and shoot your gun.

If the BBC called it a 'TV fee', I wouldnt be complaining. Its a fee they charge to watch the telly or their shows.
If I dont want to watch any BBC channels I still have to pay the fee?!
....er, that doesnt make sense but still, its understandable if its called a 'TV fee'.

One problem though, its not called a 'TV fee' is it?

No its not, its called a TV license.

I didnt have to take any tests to see if I'm responsible enough to use my telly, I didnt go on a course to learn how to change the channel or adjust the volume.

No, all I did was by a TV. What do I need a license for?

Am I alone in this?

To be honest, it doesnt matter, these posts are supposed to be about the iplayer on Wii.

Give me a break.

The BBC is outdated and out of touch. The Wii isnt.

Pantytheif... nice name. Completley agree with you 100% might not of used the same discription as you but fully back what your sayin. One thing i think needs to happen is mass protests out side bbc head quarters nothing violent just shouting "put F'ing adverts on your crappy programs" there a lot wrong with england today and people need to protest in india if some law changes they dont like they all stay at home dont work for the day and take to the streets till the law is reversed! we should be more like them before companys and government in england are all like microsoft and sony!!!

No sign of the iplayer on my Wii this morning. I hope its on its way soon, as this is great news. I disagree that the BBC is outdated and out of touch - they offer some of the best TV and Radio programming anywhere. Some of the worst too, but hey.
As for TV licences... yeah its a pain. But I'd pay more if it meant that *all* channels were ad-free and programming was independent of any investor interests

I agree strongly with that pay more for the license and have no adverts on any channel that would be great tv but can you imagine how high the fee would be youd have to pay 180 a month!!! best solution Sky+ havent seen an advert for 2 months well thats a lie actually havent paid my bill had to watch one yesterday! the stress!! And BBC have the nerve to advertise to us now i know there all there own programs and stuff but whats with all this "there's more to eastenders" crap!! sorry to keep loosing touch with what this disscusion board is all about but its touched a sore point in my head! no more!

IP Address controlled

Normally the bbc iplayer is restricted to UK IP addresses. I live in Germany but am set up as a UK account on the Wii and my PS3. So the question is will I be able to stream / download from the iplayer or will I still be blocked ?
The only English TV I can get without Satellite is BBC Prime and World. You want to talk about repeats ? Try watching BBC Prime all the time !!!!

@15 You probably won't be able to access it. It just uses your Wii's normal internet connection, and the BBC will use GeoIP on your router's IP address to decide whether to block you or not. If it's a German IP, then you'll be blocked.

How can you moan about the BBC? Its great value, TV, radio and internet.
BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, News, Cbb's, CBC & radio 1,2 & 4 plus the internet resources for just under £12 a month? What would you get for £12?
I use the catch-up feature a lot through my PC, it's great for programmes you've missed.
With the state that the commercial stations are in you should be grateful it hasn't been sold off. If you lived outside the UK your state TV would be total rubbish.
You should be proud of something we’ve got that is actually really good.
