iPlayer on Wii makes mockery of PS3 and 360, says BBC

iPlayer on Wii makes mockery of PS3 and 360, says BBC

Beeb blogger Darren Waters says Nintendo deal puts rivals’ multimedia aspirations in the shade

Technology editor at the BBC Darren Waters has stated that following Nintendo’s deal with the BBC to bring iPlayer content to the console, the Wii is the only system to offer the kind of multimedia functionality Sony and Microsoft have been talking up for years.

“How ironic that it is the Nintendo Wii, and not the Playstation 3 nor Xbox 360, that becomes the first of the current generation of consoles to have a truly dynamic range of online video content,” said Water on his blog.

“The BBC's announcement of a deal with Nintendo to put the iPlayer's streaming service on the console makes something of a mockery claims by Sony and Microsoft that their consoles are the true multimedia machines.”

He also revealed that Sony and Microsoft were involved in talks over a similar agreement – but the deals fell through as both platform holders’ made too many demands, according to head of Future Media and Technology Erik Huggers, who added:

"If you want to get on the PlayStation or Xbox, they want control of the look, the feel and the experience; they want it done within their shop, and their shop only."

What a bunch of santimonious What a bunch of sanctimonious, self-serving bull-plop, exactly the kind of rubbish we expect from the BBC (from their representatives or their programming)… The 360 and PS3 both allow you to stream “HiDef” media to your TV, purchase movies, play DVD’s, not to mention IPTV on the 360 and remote play and PVR on the PS3, do I need to go on?

If “truly dynamic range of content” entails a bunch of dumbed-down documentaries, repeats of Eastenders and the BBC’s usual trite, then Wii owners are welcome to it! If they really wanted to deliver their content on the other consoles, they would have worked on a solution and not got into a huff over using the native dashboard.

They can keep their smug attitude and their iPlayer, which took several years to develop and wasted huge amounts of money due to gross mismanagement from the start. They literally got lucky with the popularity of iPlayer, now they are screaming from the hills about it.

“Pride comes before a fall…

I think that's funny, as not too long ago, it was Nintendo that would have imposed ridiculous restraints such as look and feel etc. It's good to see Nintendo are back in the real world and adapting to get the best for their customers. :)

I say, so what? I download BBC programmers to my PC via iplayer, then play them back on my TV via the video player app on my X360. So I guess I already "get" the iplayer through my console and at higher resolution than if it was streamed, as it surely must be on Wii.

Instead of working with nintendo to develop an integrated iplayer channel through the wii, it's only usable through opera, it's only streamable and it has no fullscreen option - i'd hardly call that dynamic.

In comparison with downloading the content on a pc and streaming to your ps3 or xbox at a much higher resolution it's completely useless.

Way to make you look like a tit mr. technology editor - the first taxpayer funded nintendo fanboy?

... and who is paying for the upgrades to broadband that they are arguing about due to the popularity of iPlayer?

@2
They were "literally lucky" with the success of the iPlayer as the project was doomed from the start. Project Managers had been changed several times and the project itself had almost been cancelled as is was believed not to add any value!

@ Ian - Thanks ;D

Probably down to MS and Sony requiring HD content. Considering the BBC stated that the investment in HD for Doctor Who isn't cost effective, yet film Torchwood in HD you have to wonder what they are on. Oh and what will most buyers of the Torchwood Blu-Ray set be playing it on??? Darren - nice bit of bridge burning there... Now wheres PlayTV now that the Freeview HD standard has been set?

The day the BBC stops taxing people for watching the rubbish it puts on people's television screens (I'm referring to the TV License) is the day I start taking them seriously.

I don't own a TV at home (that's right, you read that correct!), so I don't pay it, but I'm still hounded like a criminal by the TV Licensing organisation at least once every 6 months with threats of "fines up to £1,000" and other intimidating literature and correspondence.

Did this guy ever consider the fact that what they're offering Nintendo is just not good enough and that both Sony and Microsoft are trying to do something more than showing 'repeats' of programmes from TV?

Did he also consider the fact that the reason he's in bed with Nintendo and not Sony/Microsoft is because the Revolution (I'm sorry, but I can't bring myself to call it by its commercial name) can't handle anything more demanding than a video stream that can be buffered?

What's to stop PlayTV not having the same facility BUT doing it for ALL the Freeview channels it will pick up, not just the BBC channels?

The BBC should go back to making crap dramas and debunking their country's own religion...those are things that they seem to excel at these days.
