EA Sports boss predicts interactive entertainment will make us all ‘fitter, happier and smarter’
President of EA Sports Peter Moore has predicted that games will play a vital role in the mental and physical health of mainstream consumers in future – claiming that software will allow gamers to “do things with games in their own houses that they just can’t do at the gym”.
Next-Gen.biz reports that Moore also claimed games will actually have the power to “make the world a better place” – and that the industry is currently only on the cusp of truly knowing what an ‘international audience’ truly means.
Moore was speaking as as part of a debate on what role games will play in 12 years time, at this week's MI6 marketing conference in San Francisco.
He said: “Games have a key role to play in health and wellness. People will be able to do things with games in their own houses that they just can’t do at the gym. And it’s not just about making yourself stronger and healthier but also smarter and happier.
“Games have the power to make people happy and to make the world a better place. And I do mean the world, because we are now opening up massive new markets like China and India that will bring billions of gamers.”
Moore’s comments are particularly apt with Nintendo’s Wii Fit set for European release next Friday – and hint that EA is keeping a close eye on the ‘healthy’ games market.

“interesting times”

I think the new input devices for consoles certainly make things very interesting for the future. However I think we should all remain cautious about our claims about what these games can realistically achieve.
I think Nintendo has done an incredible job of marketing Wii Fit and Brain Training but has there been any independent scientific study to prove the real benefit of these products. At this stage I can't believe it is any more than marketing spin.
I firmly believe that the majority of consumers will buy into Wii Fit believing that the contents of that box alone will help them shed stones and it just won't happen. Bring out a Wii Treadmill and maybe we'll see players actually sweating, upping their heart rate and losing some ounces.

Wii Fit is like Subway. It has the potential to help people become healthy. It is not a drug, or a guaranteed way of losing weight, but nor is Wii Sports, yet with a bit of effort you can turn an entertaining game into a tool of fitness. In the end, it comes down to how the user chooses to use the product. It is simply there as an alternate option. Have a 6 inch ham and salad sub and then jump on the balance board for some exercises, instead of grabbing the nearest piece of fried chicken and sitting down to watch repeats of the simpsons.

Peter Moore have you played NHL'94 for the SNES or Genesis? I'm more a fan of SNES NHL'94. Are you a fan of hockey if your not it's maybe because of the hockey video games coming out.
Graphics are not more important than gameplay.
NHL'95 was a butchering of that '94 great hockey video game. Can you find the '94 codes and get one of your friends or you to bring back this great game play? Please. The deking was great the goalie control was great. All these new hockey video games just don't compare to the control of '94. I need drop pass, block shot, updated rosters and such.....) from Jeff.
