Metal Gear Online delayed

Technical troubles see online version of Konami’s stealth hit delayed until further notice in both US and Europe

After a weekend of technical woes following the release of Konami’s Metal Online Beta on Sony’s PlayStation Network, the publisher has officially taken its servers offline until it figures out a way to cope with the huge traffic heading towards them.

The beta appeared on PS3’s PSN for download on Thursday, with the game scheduled to come to life last night at 11:00pm.

However, many gamers have reported significant troubles getting the game installed and ready to go. Firstly, once downloaded the game required the additional download of an update – but the peer-to-peer system offered left many waiting several hours for the update.

In addition, access to the game required users to sign up for two ID’s via Konami’s website – and further technical problems meant that even by launch hour last night many gamers had not been able to complete the registration process.

Following the failure for the game to spark to life last night, a statement on Konami’s website appeared this morning saying:

“We would like to thank all players for their keen interest in taking part in the beta test. However, we regret to inform you that due to extraordinary levels of traffic from all around the globe, we have been unable to run the service to the level we expected.

“As a temporary measure, we will be suspending the US and European public beta test and restart it once we stabilize our server. We would like to apologize for all inconveniences as well as confusion caused.

“We would like to add that due to the above reasons, we will be making the following changes to the schedule:
1) Suspend beta test: As of 21/04/2008 08:00(CEST)
2) Restart date: TBA. We will be making another announcement on 22/04/2008 08:00(CEST)
3) Beta Test closure: This will now be on 11/05/2008 at 24:00(CEST) rather than 06/05/2008 at 24:00(CEST).”

oh, because Live never has issues like this. Lets be honest, this happened because Konami tried to please too many people, before they were ready. Dont blame PSN.

Goes to show, with Sony rebuilding their online aspects, that Microsofts massive wealth of experience in the on-line sector could prove to very beneficial to X-Box owners everywhere. Will such problems push developers of on-line feature heavy games away from Sony and into Microsofts welcoming embrace?

Nooooo! I see another update in the works! It took me 6 hours to actually download the trial, then another two days (of leaving my PS3 on for hours!...but not the full 48) for the update!

Why did it take you so long to download it?? It took me 3 1/2 hours to downlaod the game and 2 to downlaod the update! Even with Microsofts Xbox Live, it would take all the current dedicated servers to cope with the massive amounts of demand-resulting in no other games working! Developers won't abandon Sony because of this! Besides, theres a reason Sony has an annual revenue (And Profit) four times that of Microsofts!

The real issue is that Konami are trying to do this on their own servers. Had they asked a platform holder this would never have happened . PSN is just the front end as I see it, its the Konami servers in Japan that are tripping out.
Had the same problems, the Japanese one is just about alive!

The real issue here is that it's a BETA. People are lucky to even be allowed to beta test anything and if you've ever used a beta product and never had a single problem with one, you are in a very small minority. It just happens that this is a public beta, and unfortunately that means all inevitable problems are also released to the public for people, like Dan above, to get off on news like this.

Incidentally Dan you should have said "Should have...". It's not "should of"... Of is a preposition and in "should've" (which is what you mean) , the "ve" is a contraction of "have". Maybe if you spent less time on your XBox and more time in school you'd know this.

Some of the posts on here are hilarious!!

I dont agree with the 'IQ' bashing on Dan by comment '8' but I do agree with the point that this is a BETA. If I had a PS3 and wanted to get involved with MGS online, I'd much rather experience these problems with a BETA than with a finished copy of the game after parting with £50 for it.

However, that said, I can see this happening again at launch day regardless.....

@ 10 & 11

I dont own a 360 so dont think I'm a fan-boy but I challenge you to name a full game that is available to buy right now on PS3 that looks better than the 360's best offerings.

Seriously, Halo 2?

You might have well have mentioned 'Two Worlds' or something....

I dunno......

If this was on the 360, the whole of Microshaft would explode, their servers can barely cope with Live, yet alone another beta...

take COD 4 beta for example, that was almost a complete disaster.

Deary me, fighting like school kids over consoles, seriously girls, get a frigging life outside of the net... People who read your comments are laughing at YOU...

How about Uncharted or Gran Turismo 5 Prolog to name but two... I don't own a PS3 but I have eyes..

Downloading the Beta = Fine. Downloading the update = fine (albeit slow).

Forcing every gamer from US/Europe to create a Konami ID through a SINGLE website ... hmmmm

got game download and the update (5hrs) and eventually managed to create a konami id then start game only to find konami delayed start. this is completly a konami issue all psn did was provide the door thru to start downloading from konami, and that was the part that worked.

as for the whole xbox ps3 nonsense no one cares, you buy the machine you want and many buy both. would any of us benefit from 1 console going under and having microsoft or sony able to charge higher prices and give less choice as a result. Its like mac's & pc's, everyone knows macs are superior but bill gates insist on catering to the *special* children

@ 16

I cant really comment on 'Uncharted' as I havent played it properly myself but I didnt think it looked much better than say, Gears of War. Which baring in mind was released a year earlier.

Gran Turismo 5 prolog isnt a full game.

I had no problems downloading, uploading and updating.I had a slight delay in getting my konami id but manged to get 1 for each of my ps3(two).Its a popular game; konami should've anticipated the level of interest, but from what i gather kojimas staff have always directed their efforts to the japanese consumers(from what kojima himself stated in an interview).I guess now konami and kojima pro will realise MGS4 & MGO is a global phenomenon
