Gamertags show that consumers are already playing Rockstar’s game ahead of release

The first reports of illegal rips of GTA IV appearing online on Xbox 360 have started to emerge – and the game’s presence on a number of gamertags confirms that some are already getting to grips with Liberty City.

Kotaku reports that a PAL rip of the title appeared on newsgroups at 11:50am this morning courtesy of a hacker named iCON.

Once downloaded and burnt onto a DVD, owners of either a debug/test 360 or a modded machine were able to run the code.

The PS3 has to date been more resilient to hacking attempts, so most pirate activity is expected to focus on Microsoft’s console.

Meanwhile, Achievement Point tracking site MyGamerCard.net shows eight players whose profiles show GTA IV activity, VG247 reports.

It has been claimed that the game is already in the hands of a number of retailers, but also that all involved have been required to sign agreements stipulating that the title would not be sold early – or even given to employees ahead of release.

“Iresponsible Reporting”

I think a site such as MCV reporting this for nothing more than some cheap click throughs and advertising revenue is nasty and that by posting the article you are advertising that if you want GTA IV early you can download it illegally.

MCV you should be ashamed! Any chance of an update of where we can download it please?

Thanks for your comment.

I have to say I disagree with your view. Piracy is a huge issue in our industry - as I'm sure you understand. The fact that arguably the biggest game of the year is openly available to pirates several days ahead of release is depressing, but important, news for the industry.

As for whether we are promoting piracy - I would say definitely not. The only people who could conceivably take note of this story and then obtain an illegal copy as a result are those who already own an illegally modified machine - and I would guess they already know a thing or two about piracy. I very much doubt anyone who has never pirated a game before would do so as a result of reading this news.

MCV would never condone piracy and urges all those who wish to play GTA IV, or any other game, to legally purchase a legitimate copy.

This happens with every single XBOX360 release. Why is GTA4 getting special attention?

Please dont post back saying 'its the years biggest release' I know why its news, what I'm trying to say is, if MCV considers piracy such a big issue, then why isnt there a news flash for every single game?
I now understand why comment #1 says that you have reported this for nothing more than a cheap click. This is making me want to track down the code and play it early for myself because it has been brought to my attention.

Also, you say in your defence that the only people who can take advantage of this code are people who already own an illegally modified machine but in your original news thread, you say that it can also be played by people who own a debug/test machine?

The only people who I know who own debug/test machines are people within the industry. Are you implying that no one in the industry would play an illegal copy of this game and that it will only be the people who own hacked/modded machines?

I'm confused?

I know people in the indusrty arent SUPPOSED to be involved with videogame piracy but surely this code has been leaked by someone in the industry? Or someone who has received the game early, such as a retailer?

So is anything going to be done about these guys who already have the game like this Busta Chopz dude. I presume he either has a pirate copy or he works in a games retailer store and opened a copy early. Either way he is in the wrong. PIRACY IS WRONG!!!

Was afraid this was going to happen after the whole Halo3 incident. In defense of MCV, they are just reporting the news. The fact that GTA4 is the biggest release of this year, means that it is a viable focal point for them to use to show piracy is still so rife, even on supposedly safe "enclosed" systems like the 360. Thats probably why they havent reported on every other game that gets cracked and pirated.
To be fair, to run a pirate game on a 360 for your average user, you have to open your 360 (validating your warranty, especially important in the world of "the Red Ring of Death") and connect it to a PC in order to make it viable for it to run copies. Alot more technical than the good old days of just simply soldering in a chip or taking it to "trotters independant software retailer" on your local high street and getting them to do it for you. Plus modded console owners have to constantly update their systems in order to avoid being banned on LIVE, which you have to agree is pretty much an integral part of the 360 experience nowadays. For these reasons alone, in the grand scheme of things i dont think it will effect the overall volume of sales on the 360.

This will probably happen to the PS3 in the future once Blu-Ray burners and blanks become alot cheaper. If MGS4 was hacked, which will probably amount to being the biggest thing to hit the PS3 so far, i think MCV would have legitimate reasons to report it. It does effect the industry after all.

Cant help but look upon this all with a sense of irony. I feel like i have been forced from my PC to the console because software developers were jumping ship because software piracy is just so rife on the PC and it couldn't be trusted as a platform for them to get a decent return on all the hard work and money they had put in making their games (I'm not complaining to much, sitting on the sofa with a wireless pad is alot more comfy than sitting on an office chair lol). Remember John Carmack at QuakeCon on his reasons why iD software was no longer viewing the PC as a flagship development system? Read between the lines and he was basically saying "Yeah, the 360 and the PS3 are both pigs to work with, but i got staff to pay, and you lot using Bittorent is killing me." If these systems are consistently hacked and games are pirated, what are they going to do now until that utopian dream of everything being downloaded straight to the box becomes a reality?

I think these articles are interesting, is just highlights how this "piracy cold war" is constantly evolving.

Pantythief - if you were a bit cleverer you might actually succeed in being provocative. As it stands, you come across as a silly little boy fighting above his weight who is ably demonstrating his ignorance.

Why does MCV not cover every pirate release? Why do you think? Let's say, for argument's sake, that there's a 5% piracy rate on 360. If title X is expected to sell 200,000 copies, then the publisher of that game and retail and everyone else in the channel can expect to lose 10,000 sales to piracy.

Now, GTA IV is expected to sell 4 million copies in its first day on sale according to some analysts! That's 200,000 lost sales! That's why a trade site needs to report this news, and that's why it's newsworthy when GTA IV is pirated and not when the likes of Bullet Witch or A-Train X are.

And to then claim that this story alone makes you want to "track down code and play it because it has been brought to your attention"... well, it's just so pathetic it's hard to know how to begin mocking you. The fortunate thing is even if that laudable claim were true, you're clearly too mentally degenerated to figure out how to do it anyway.

Please bear in mind that MCV is run by professionals who work at the heart of the industry. You are a fool and an idiot. You cannot hope to hold your own in an argument with them. Or with anyone, I would have thought. You really do need to understand that you do not know best. You know very, very little. You should really just treat what MCV says as gospel - it would serve you well to do so.

Now please, please, please sod off back to Eurogamer or GameFaqs or wherever it is people like you propagate and leave discussion here to adults, industry members and people whose IQ is higher than their waist size.

@ Ofrodian

What can I say?

I cant really disagree with your point about me coming across like a 'silly little boy fighting above his weight' because after reading your post, I can see how my views may have been misinterpreted. When I said 'makes me want to track down the code etc' I meant by posting this news, MCV have probably made more people aware of the leak than if they hadnt. Also, I didnt say 'this story alone' you might want to read my post again.

I see your point about the sales issue as well, however, I also see GTA4 as an easy target for headline regardless of what the headline is. Once again, I think I'm misunderstood.

Now, apart from my comment about tracking down the code, everything I typed was a question. You said I should leave the discussions here to adults. By asking questions, I'm opening debate, isnt that what adults do?
I thought the point of the posts option on the news flashes was to pass comment and 'discuss' as you so rightly suggested, I didnt realise that it was for people like yourself to bully others by calling them ignorant, mentally degenerated, fools and idiots all of which you have called me.

You say that I really need to understand that I do not know best, I never said I did?

You also say that I know very little. I find that confusing coming from someone who doesnt know me?

I could go on about your rant at me all day but unfortunately, I dont actually care enough to do so.

Just before I finish, I dont know what you're implying by saying 'people whose IQ is higher than their waist size'?
If you're implying that I'm overweight, I wanted to let you know that I'm about 6ft 2" and have a waist size of around 32-34", I practice Muah Thai Kickboxing three days a week and have done for the last 3 years, I'm in pretty good shape to be fair.
Now, I would like to say that I'm not ignorant or mentally degenerated, however, I can be if you want to meet up somewhere for a fight?

I'm being serious, post back with a contact number and we'll get everything sorted. Maybe then we'll see who's 'fighting above their weight'

fin.

Guys, this will be my last post on here because I'm obviously winding a lot of people up and I dont want to be the cause of any more trouble.

But in my last post, I wasnt saying 'yeah I'll smash your face in if you dont like my views' I'm saying why are you calling me names and assuming you know what I'm like?

If you dont like my opinions, fair enough, but why not challenge them in an adult way? Dont go calling me names for no reason. Surely thats what ignorant and mentally degenerated people do?

Am I right?

The 'fight' comment was an example of what a small minded person would say, if you cant see the point I was making then theres no point in me even posting this!

With me?

I give up.

I am not trying to fight above my weight but I feel that you had no need for the comments made towards pantythief.

If he is meant to be any of the comments you made, surely you are the one who is not very intelligent, carrying on like a little child yourself. I feel that it is you who lowered the tone & not pantythief with your school yard banter.

Whenever any game is made available on torrent sites it could technically be news. It's just not important news, so isn't reported as there's better things to talk about - no one cares if you can download some ****, no-interest game a few days ahead of release.

GTA's a big game though, and in its case people do care.

Basically, news is worth reporting if people want to read it. I saw the headline for this news in my inbox and immediately clicked on it. That says it all really.

Personally I can't see what all the fuss is about. I hated selling GTA to people where I used to work. Especially to parents who buy it for there kids.. ~A game that is Condemning Violence and prostitution isn't big and it isn't clever.

The BBC has also just recently posted an article similiar to MCV, and they even make reference to the "top torrent site". Should the BBC be criticised for promoting piracy too?
