Midnight openings nationwide pull in the punters; media coverage hits all time high

Rockstar’s eagerly awaited sequel went on sale today and, as expected, demand has been huge for the title. Retail has been preparing for the arrival of the game with a huge amount of pre-sales and some stores opening in the early hours this morning.

Microsoft has fiercely marketed the game in a bid to notch up more sales on the Xbox 360 than the PlayStation 3 and with a greater installed base, some analysts have predicted the 360 is likely to win more GTA IV sales initially.

Sony released a hardware bundle to counter the move.

Media coverage has been at an all time high. Adverts have flooded national press and TV, while unprecedented news coverage has been given over to the title.

worked the midnight launch lastnite, gotta say the worst midnight launch for a game so far!

Gears and Halo were ok cause we had core gamers, this time round we had lil punks packed full attitude, felt like smashing there faces against the counter tops

Should have done. Then blamed it on the game.

Preordered from zavvi in liverpool 3 weeks ago (when GAME and Gamestation had stopped taking preorders) Could have had the game from an indie on friday for £60 but decided to wait for extra 4 days to get the free 3 months live sub.

No midnight opening so played halo online till 7 and headed into town, they had my copy with the live sub ready to go with my name on it! Pretty impressed as i preordered so late!

Thoughts on the game? Just messed about a bit really, seems a bit strange but definatly has that GTA feel to it, will take time to get used to it (as did san andreas) can see myself loving it! :)

wow, you sure they're the only ones with attitude? also, when you say 'little', i take it they could prove they were old enough to buy it?

yes! I was just a tad angry, plus with it being the gta launch I thought it would be quite a suitable thing to do.

I call em little cause their shorter and younger then me, but were over 18 unfortunately

@ sora:

Err, "lil punks"? You don't mean you were selling the game to under-age kids, were you?

Got this delivered to work and I want to go home now. In all honest though, it's nice to see the BBC portray the game in a good light this morning.

@Zed Zee

like I stated in my earlier comment

"I call em little cause their shorter and younger then me, but were over 18 unfortunately"

They had ID! Like a Provisional/Driving licence!...I dont know, it may be the fact they're short, dress with baggie jeans and tops, and act like 15 year olds that I call em lil ****s!

And Im sure anyone else here whos worked in retail knows what Im talking about, oh and anyone whos mid 20s and over.

Oh and reason why I said unfortunately is becuase I really did hope they were under age cuase they would've got the boot!

“GAME employee heaven!”

Crikey, sora, you're turning these threads into game shop employee complaints pages!

I didn't read the rest of the threads, hence why I missed your later explanation.

Still, those 'little devils' are what keeps the industry going, right?

Anyway, if you genuinely work for a games shop, what's the ratio that you've noticed between PS3 and X360 sales of GTA-IV then?

You see, that's the kind of stuff I'd like MCV to be reporting on...Not 'GAME employee flushes toilet' type headlines.
